Prescription head lice

I have never had a problem with head lice before but this last year, my 2 girls went to camp and came home itching and scratching their heads. Of course I was in denial at first but then I saw those icky criters crawling in my oldest's daughters head. I headed to the pharmacy and got Rid, followed directions to a T, combed with lice comb, vacummed, bagged toys, vacummed furniture and thought they were gone; but 2 months later, kids are itching again. We used Nix this time, same thing. We even got new beds (not because of the head lice but because they needed them lol), still they leave for a while and they come back. I comb, I used home remedies even, I used different brands. Everyone in our has gets treated, hair brushes boiled. Still came back. I threw all hair brushes and hair pretties away and bought new but dang, those nasty criters just seem to love us.
I took the girls to the doctor for the prescription strength about 6 months ago. The doctor looked at their heads and he saw no evidence of lice but wrote a prescription anyway. I went to the pharmacy to pick it up and they said it would be $300. I declined because doc said there was no more head lice. Now my girls are itching again and I am combing lice out once again.
My oldest daughter has a lot of sleep overs and I am wondering if she is the one that keeps bringing them in but I don't know. I am wondering if I shouldn't just go ahead and get that prescription strength treatment. I don't know how I am going to pay for it though but I have run out of ideas.

Manual removal (the comb) is better than any of the treatments. We did use the RX, but finally spent $30 on a really good lice comb and used it daily for nearly a month. Then every week for 3 more months to make sure we were clear. The comb matters more than the initial treatments. I KNOW what a pain it is. I was ready to cut my girl's hair off, but a friend who had been through it saved her hair. She had cut her 3 girls into short bobs and still had a mess. She finally got aggressive with the manual removal and that's the only thing that worked. She used olive oil to soak their hair and smother them and then combed a lot. I did the same.

[ In Reply To ..]Just get any type of vegetable oil. Coat their heads in the oil. Wrap in a plastic bag. Have them sleep in it overnight. WASH EVERYTHING!. Wash their hair with Palmolive (cuts the oil). Wait 2 weeks and do it again. You will have lice no more!

[ In Reply To ..]Oh and definitely remove as many eggs/dead lice as possibel after you wash the oil out. The RID lice comb is the best and works great. However, the vegetable oil smothers the lice. The 2-week followup is for safety issues only.

[ In Reply To ..]Tried one then another, think Rid then Nix. It had a green flat comb (the one I think worked the best), the other had a purple comb that was in the shape of a razor. Took us 6-8 weeks to kill the suckers. I thought I had it beat at 3 or so weeks...well in 3 of us I did, my one daughter took a bit longer. But the key is combing their hair every day....I mean throughly and painstakingly. It would take me 2 hours to comb through/pick thru each kid's hair (they both have long hair). Then the 2 of them would pick through mine after I did them. I did not rely on the comb though to get the nits out, and picked them out myself. My DH took a turn or two but I did the bulk of it, so much fun. I also bagged, washed, sprayed, etc. Ran the pillows thru the dryer every day until I knew they were gone. You have to do your car too (as well as the house), if you did not do that, vacuum it, get the lice spray and go to town. Make sure you take the vacuum bag out immediately, get it out of the house, those critters can crawl right back out.
But you have to be super persistant, every day until they are gone. All it takes is one nit to have the cycle start all over again. I would not use the prescription stuff though, have heard it is super nasty, the OTC stuff is bad enough. I think I spent about $250 to $300 killing the suckers over the 6-8 weeks we had them.
We did Rid and Nix, then some home remedies too. My hair and scalp are still messed up (caused my hair color to change, got darker, lost all my natural highlights,and have horrible dandruff now), and we had them four years ago. Kids have dandruff now too, sucks.
