When my son developed picky eating habits at age 10 months - the pediatrician advised me

to offer only minimal amounts of his foods of choice, then to continue to offer a predominance of a healthy balanced diet. He said babies will inevitably choose full bellies over starvation. He was right.

Freedom to choose what we like to eat. - anon

I encouraged my children to eat healthy foods but also allowed them to eat things they enjoyed and liked. I had a teacher in fifth grade who forced "cleaning the plate." To this day, I cannot look at a date, a green pea, or rice without gagging. I have not found that most people will like certain foods any better simply because they are "forced" to choose them. I personally feel that all this concentration on what children eat is going to grow up a large number of young people with eating disorders. It is good to teach nutrition and offer healthy foods, but again IMO Michelle Obama is going overboard (and no, before someone jumps, I do not dislike the first lady, I simply think her zeal and efforts are overboard and misguided)

The operative word is the freedom to "choose" not...sm - VTMT

"forcing" anyone to clean their plate. (I too was traumatized when young by that practice.) It is a matter of offering more healthy choices and eliminating the transfats and other unhealthy choices. The choice is always there to pack a lunch for your kids.
Sure, pack a lunch and the food police check it and - backwards typist

force the kids to eat the cafeteria food if they (food police) deem it's not good enough. Remember a few months back when that happened in a couple schools?

Sorry, not much freedom of choice anymore.
Hey, food police? Is that a job MTs could - apply for? We have 8 schools right here! NM

Did you see the new commerical about the kid - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
being told to sit at the table until he eats his veggies? I laughed because I did that to our kids when they didn't like what was on their plate, but they didn't get old and gray sitting there. After a few hours, they would eat all of it, groaning and complaining. They found out it wasn't as bad as they thought.

Today, they eat everything they used to balk at when kids except rice. Can't blame them for that. LOL

I agree with you completely that Michelle is taking it a little too far. I got sick of seeing the commercials (thank heavens they stopped showing those) when they first changed the pyramid to whatever they call it now, breaking down the food groups into more tiny wedges.
The "clean plate club" midset came from folks, - many of whom were
[ In Reply To ..]
children during the depression, teaching their kids to clean their plate as they were instructed to as children... because they didn't know when the next time they were going to have a full meal would be! I think this is one of the horrible habits possible, and my mother and grandmother were both guilty of it. You'd hear "waste not want not" a lot from my grandmother, and many of us would be forced to sit at the table a long time until we overstuffed our already full stomachs.

However, though that it is a habit that should be broken, it has nothing to do with encouraging healthy eating. All you have to do is look at the mystery ingredients in the junk that's being served to our children and then look at their expanding waist lines to see this.

I've said it before, healthy foods can be served to children in ways so not only will they eat it... they will prefer it over the prepackaged garbage many of them are used to eating now. If the kids are throwing it out, it's because it's being prepared poorly... not because it's healthy. Also, most children absolutely love being involved with where their food comes from. Starting a home garden (or even a school garden) and having children plant seeds, care for plants, harvest them, and prepare them is an exciting experience for many, and they take pride in their accomplishment. They need to be taught somewhere that the food they put in their bodies should come mostly from the ground... not a plastic wrapper, and if this isn't being taught at home, it should be taught at school. Eating is a basic thing that all of us need to do every day, and most people don't know how to do it right. These kids are getting sick for crying out loud.

Again, how is MO going a little too far? If you ask me, it's not going far enough. We all have a right to know what we're putting in our mouths, and we should all know how to eat properly if we want to function as healthy productive adults and not be a burden on anyone else.
. You don't seem to get it. You talk about healthy foods - backwards typist
[ In Reply To ..]
That is not the only point. Clean your plate....yes, I grew up with that. I'm not obese. Why? BECAUSE I GOT PLENTY OF EXERCISE (yelling so you can hear my words).

We played outside. We had gym in school. We had to walk to school. We had healthy foods back then, too.

I doubt you were "forced" to sit at the table and over-stuff yourself. Parents didn't do that. You ate until you were full....unless you wanted desert if it was offered.

Our parents didn't buy junk foods, and neither did I when my kids were young. There was no desert, no chips, no pretzels in my family. Those were "treats."

You're overstepping it - Check the 'tude
[ In Reply To ..]
And DO NOT tell me what my parents (or grandparents) did and didn't do. I grew up with them... you didn't. Do not insinuate that I am a liar, and I won't insinuate that you're anything else either... okay?

Also, before speaking up, try looking into the food system in this country before you catch an attitude with me. If you want to keep on with the way things are now... better you should know what you're talking about. If you want to keep paying to help produce the junk and they pay for the fat-related diseases that develop afterwards, good for you. I'm sick of it.
'Scuse me but I am not "overstepping it" You, yourself, stated - backwards typist

and I quote, "You'd hear "waste not want not" a lot from my grandmother, and many of us would be forced to sit at the table a long time until we overstuffed our already full stomachs."

I did not tell you what your parents and grandparents did or didn't do, and I did not try to "catch an attitude" with you. I was stating what we did when I was young.

Maybe you should re-read some of your posts. This is not the first time you tried to give lecture ME by trying to insinuate what I said or didn't say, but truthfully, I really don't care. Keep your attitude to yourself.

Thank you very much. We're done.

Copy and paste is fun. Here, remember this? "I doubt you were "forced" to sit at the table and over-stuff yourself. Parents didn't do that. You ate until you were full....unless you wanted desert if it was offered."

Get a clue... parents did do that. I was there. You weren't. As a matter of fact, if we refused to clean our plate, the only place we went after we got up from the table was straight to bed as punishment. And for you to say that you doubt that happened and in the next breath say parents didn't do that, you're insinuating that I'm lying. Talk about re-reading what one has written. And my family wasn't the only one who did this. I can vivdly remember my best friend (next door neighbor) whose brother would have to sit for HOURS while trying to choke down pasta which he did not like at all (and unforutnately was all the family could afford most times). I can still see him sitting there taking the smallest possible bites and gagging as it went down with tears coming down his face. Yes... parents DID do this, and this practice is another bad habit that people have picked up over the years. Don't believe me, just Google "Clean your plate club" and "overeating" or "obesity" and see what you find. Lots of kids went through this... and still do because it's what their parents learned.

Plus, since I make it a point not to use a moniker, you don't know what I have or haven't "lectured" you about. Nice try, but it ain't gonna work.

Again, look into what's really going on instead of just going with the Faux flow or repeating what the other pub cool kids are saying before commenting. Otherwise, hug a fat kid... preferably one with diabetes or hypertension. There are plenty out there.

Now we're done.
You go backwards typist!!! - that one always twisting posts

What about the state/county-employed nutritionists? - An

[ In Reply To ..]
Don't get why we need the overkill on our children's school lunches. At least in our State, each county has a degreed and licensed nutritionist who plans the school lunches. The meals are already supposed to be healthy for our children and they are (I have seen the menus) things most kids would enjoy eating. Why do we need Michelle Obama stepping in now to tell them how to do their jobs?

Elementary School Kids Can Get CondomsJun 29, 2010
PROVINCETOWN, Mass. (AP) — A new policy in a Massachusetts public school district that makes condoms available to all students, even those in elementary school, is drawing criticism from some who say it goes too far. Provincetown School Board Chairman Peter Grosso says because there is no set age when sexual activity starts, the committee decided not to set an age for condom availability. Under the policy, any student requesting a condom from a school nurse must first receiv ...

Do Not Ask Chris Christie Where His Kids Go To SchoolJun 23, 2011
This guy wants to be President? Sheesh! What a nasty man. New Jersey Governor Chis Christie doesn't like it when reporters ask him to provide details on his meetings with Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes.Nor, apparently, is he fond of New Jersey voters asking him seemingly reasonable questions about why he sends his kids to private schools. He made that clear when the subject came up during an appearance on local PBS call-in show On The Line last night. "It's none of your business, ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...

Safe School CzarOct 22, 2009
