LICE

Posted: Aug 21, 2010

About a month ago I asked for advice about a girl who had lice for the last year.  She had been treated 3 times but her mother evidently is not taking care of it at home.  I ended up having my daughter's birthday pool party.  I checked the little girl when she came, and she had eggs all over her hair.  I didn't have the heart or courage to send her home.  We carried on with the party thinking I would just get it over with and she would go home and we would be lucky and not get it.

Well this morning I was looking at my daughter's head and guess what?  Yup, eggs.  Now I am treating my long hair, my daughter's hair, doing laundry, changing beds, vacuuming, etc. etc.  I was supposed to be having a great time with my boyfriend today car shopping, going out to eat, heading to the mall.  Guess I should have listened to the advice everyone gave.

I went through this when my kids were little and I found something that really helps. We you put the strong lice stuff on their head - I can't remember the name of it, the lice are kind of immune to it. I even used the strongest one that had that docs don't even like to prescribe. Then I got a small nit comb and got the shampoo that you use to get the chlorine out of your kid's hair. I don't remember the name of it but it says right on the bottle that it will take chlorine out. You might have to go to a couple of stores to find it. Then after you shampoo you take the same brand conditioner that is used for getting chlorine out and glob it all over their head, let it sit a minute and then run the small comb through their hair and the conditioner kind of foams up and all the bugs, poop, etc. come right out of the hair. Then I would just wipe the comb off with kleenex and keep going until everything was out. You still have to take them outside and check for the nits (eggs) and pull them out with your fingernail. The problem with my kids is they kept coming back time after time and I did not feel comfortable putting the pesticide on their scalps so often. You can put the shampoo and conditioner on their head every night and then go outside in the sun so you can see the nits to get rid of them. I know this sounds kind of weird and complicated but, it really works. My kids had it about 4 times and I got so frustrated and then did this for about 5 days in a row and it worked.

They are a lot easier to get than most people realize. Next time you go get your hair cut, just watch. The stylist will pick up the same comb or brush that she has used on everyone that day.

When my kids were young there was a big outbreak at their school. It was frustrating. I used the Nix. I became obsessed with them. That is when I started watching in the hair salon.

I could not have turned the kid away either, that would have been like shunning her.

I don't know what kind of tmt you use but Nix - sm - ECMT

is the best OTC from my experience. When we got the critters 2 years ago, at first we tried Rid (as the girl's mom we got them from recommended), did not quite kill them all, then switched to Nix on doctor recommendation as they did not want to prescribe anything ( the girl’s mom ended up having to use the prescription as she had mega trouble getting rid of them too). I did several home remedies as well on them and myself-killed my hair basically (just stripped all my natural highlights), just coming back to life now 2 years later. My kids went through the wringer on this. Took about 8 weeks to get rid of them on my older daughter, but finally we beat them on her, the rest of us took about a month. I picked, picked and picked through their hair, ended up cutting about 6-inches off my hair, but daughter did not want her hair cut (down to butt as was mine) so I think that was one reason it took longer with her, that and I was just worn out checking everyone, doing that for 4-6 hours a day and trying to work, clean, re-cleaned, cleaned again, bagged up tons of stuff (I went nuts). Running pillows, etc. through the dryer every day for two months, it just never seemed to end. I sympathize and hope you don't go too crazy over the next month, you have to be vigilant and keep checking for at least 3 weeks, don't get complacent or it will take much longer to eradicate the suckers. --- I would let the mom know though that your kid got them from her and maybe alert the school nurse so she can check the girl on the first day of school-- because of my kids (and probably some others) they ended up having outbreaks for about 6 months. Do not worry about what other might think, be open about it. We did not have one person think less of us, most responded with, oh yeah, mine had them last year, or a couple years ago. I would also advise all the party goers parents, they should be informed ASAP so they can check their kids and hopefully get them taken care of on their own kids if they got them too (before school starts if it has not already).

Those combs stink by the way, do not totally - sm - ECMT

on them. Use them yes, but you have to pull the nits out by hand, the combs will not do that. I would ust the comb to smooth the hair, and part it into sections, find the nits (flash light and magnifier helps a lot) and would pull them out one nit/strand at a time. Do not rely on the shampoo to kill them, you have to pull them out to be sure then dispose of the nits and remove from house immediately. --Good luck.

The one thing that I found worked when the OTC ones did not work was Mayonnaise (not Miracle Whip)...it's gross, it's disgusting, and its hard to wash out of the hair...but it works. When my daughter was younger she babysat for a family that ALWAYS had them...I made the connection that when she babysat, she got them. I told her she couldn't babysit there anymore because I could not afford the $200 dollars or the headache to get rid of the lice...Anyway, she has very thick curly hair and it was sooo hard to get rid of them and that is what I found worked. Soaked her hair in mayo put a shower cap over it (I can't remember how long though, sorry.) It has something to do with the oil suffocating them, eggs included so that if you miss a couple eggs they are still dead and will not hatch)...

Also, make sure to vacuum around the floorboards and mattress ticking and then throw the vacuum bag away. And get the car...that was one of my things that I never thought to do...so important!

Yes, vacuum car as she says, I also got the - sm - ECMT

"spray" stuff and sprayed the car a lot, mostly the head rests. Lice crawl, they do not jump. Generally they will stay on their host but obvsiously they crawl or fall off at times. Vacuum mattresses, around the bed, floor really well, wash everything you can where your daughter has slept. If you do not have them though don't treat yourself. Not necessary. Supposedly they do not like coconut oil though, for a while I would mix some in with the shampoo (after we'd killed them all). Google home remedies too, forget what I used, one had listerine in it, and some sort of oil I remember, maybe mineral, one had vinegar in it, there are quite a few out there. I never did the mayo one as I did not want to fight to get that one out but people do swear by that one. But again remove the nits, never assume they are dead....just get them out and then you will be safe. Good luck.

So it is possible that there are eggs that are dead on the head? How can one tell if it is dead or alive and about to hatch?
You cannot tell if dead or alive, it is a hard shell - sm - ECMT

around the forming baby lice. Supposedly Nix kills the eggs, but considering the trouble I had getting them off my one daughter I don't quite believe it. Granted she has thick long hair so that did not help but when I got down to finding 1-2 lice I knew was near the end, you can find a chart on line of their lifecycle and the size they have to be to lay eggs. We used a loupe to look at them. If you can kill them before they lay eggs then you are golden. They have a short lifecycle but you have to break it in order to beat it. --- all this lice talk has my scalp itching like crazy....nuts!

By the way, I treated myself. We were cuddling on the sofa last night head to head watching television. Have done 7 loads of laundry today. Time to go do another one.
half water/half vinegar and a comb from the pet store - justthefacts

that is metal helped a friend of mine get the nits out of her sons' hair. After they were gone, she does the combing with vinegar water once a week and says it seems to keep the hair really healthy and shiney. She also said she uses hairspray every now and then - her reasoning is that it makes the hair slippery and harder for eggs to stick in case they are exposed.

I think with the Nix, the instructions are to do it first, and then a week later do it again to kill any eggs or new ones. I had to fess up to my boyfriend and he had them too. That year was so bad. There was such a big outbreak at the school, that the drug stores here could hardly keep the stuff on the shelf.

I agree that the nit combs suck - I actually got a newborn baby comb from the nursery at the hospital I worked for. I just didn't think anybody could get those. That conditioner foams up so much you could probably just use the tight end of a regular comb. And, you do have to be very diligent about picking the nits as often as possible.

Yeah...even with the mayo, you still want to get as many of the eggs as you can, I was just saying that if you happened to miss one or two, the "should" be dead and hopefully won't reinfest...I also sprayed the car. And you ALWAYS have to redo everything you did the first time 7-10 days later...and recheck...those things really suck. I get itchy just thinking about it. I have 4 kids are it was such a chore when 1 got it. Luckily those days are over for me(knock on wood). It seems once they get up into high school you don't really see it anymore. Not that it isn't possible (Like with my daughter). But she picked it up from the smaller children she was babysitting for.

Prescription Head LiceAug 13, 2012
I have never had a problem with head lice before but this last year, my 2 girls went to camp and came home itching and scratching their heads.  Of course I was in denial at first but then I saw those icky criters crawling in my oldest's daughters head.  I headed to the pharmacy and got Rid, followed directions to a T, combed with lice comb, vacummed, bagged toys, vacummed furniture and thought they were gone; but 2 months later, kids are itching again. We used Nix this time, ...

Head Lice In Swimming PoolsJul 22, 2010
I am having a pool party/birthday party for my daughter tomorrow and I know of a little girl who has had head lice 3 times in the past year.  (I don't really think she has gotten rid of it).  If she gets in my swimming pool, what are the chances she could she give it to the other kids?  I do not want to insult her by "checking" her head when she gets here and then not letting her go swimming.  I know I will find nits.  Any advice? ...
