Beauty pageant for kids

Posted: Jul 18, 2010

What's your opinion?  I don't like to see toddlers dressed up with all the makeup, looking like little women, many times doing the sexy gestures, etc.  If we want to teach girls that they are valuable and not just sex objects this is the wrong way to go about it.  I especially hate when they show the little kids crying and the parents forcing them to perform.  Just me?

Disgusting. Parents doing that are sick and selfish. - nm

Don't tell me, let me guess - Toddlers and Tiaras?

That show horrifies me. All the male judges just seem to smarmy and the parents so desperate to relive their apparently unfulfilled childhood dreams. Kids seemed to be 'sexed' up at younger and younger ages. Did you see that video that made the rounds where the 6-7 year old dance troupe danced to Beyonce Put a Ring on This, complete with the bumps, grinds, and shimmies? It seems more and more parents these days are turning their children into tiny trollops, and proudly posting it on the web for every pedophile's viewing (ahem) pleasure.

There is another side - to kid BPs

I have a friend whose child has been doing BPs for years. The child is now 8. This child adores what she is doing and is getting contracts for fashion and hair events, even commercials. That, plus maintaining perfect scores at school.

My friend draws the lines on some things, for instance, false teeth, fake eyelashes and too revealing clothing. The child is learning how to suceed at something she wants and is learning to understand it takes work to get what you want in life. They started with an idea that this would probably be the only way the child could have a college fund, and it is providing a nest egg towards that goal.

This is a wonderful child and mom. There are some of these personalities in the pageants. The link shows a glimpse into their world.

I don't think that it is all bad... - Kendra

They are a wonderful way for young girls to gain confidence in their appearances and personalities. Sometimes, I think that if the kids could do it and keep the mothers out of it, they would be wonderful. I think that the problems lie more with the mothers than the pageants. They often look at more than just appearance and include a talent while focusing more on personality than anything else, which is not a terrible life lesson. Of course there are extremes, which is what you are mostly going to see on TV because it is shocking and interesting, but there are benefits to pageants, as well. Plus, what is more fun than a big day of playing dress up?

The extremes do happen in - "real life" sm

My ex-sister-in-law was into pageants when her girls were younger. She asked my daughter to accompany them to a pageant so my daughter could video it for them. When my daughter returned home, she said to me that she never, ever wanted to go back because the moms were scary and crazy! I considered for a nanosecond letting my daughter do pageants because we already had an "in," but thankfully my DH set me straight real quick!

Of course they do, but there are people who are... - Kendra

not crazy, as well. Like I said, it is not ALL bad.

Those things CREEP ME OUT, as do the parents. - Makeup on 5-year-olds? Yuck.

Why Do People Get Into This Pageant CrapJan 04, 2015
**Edit:   My question is  why do parents get into this and then beg for money from the community.    I'm NOT asking opinions about pageants. This kind of foolishness costs money, I know that.  People want their kid to be miss whatever of the county, but they dont want to pay for expensive clothes, culture lessons and whatever other kind of crap to make sure their kid wins?? You want this silly fake image for your kid but you're not willing to d ...

Beauty QuestionDec 29, 2011
A friend of a friend has just started selling some French imported skin care and beauty products caled Votre Vu.  Kind of high-end, but I've certainly paid more for products in the past. Has anyone tried this line or any parts of it and, if so, what did you think of them? She's offered to send me samples but I figured accepting the samples might lead to a "hard sell" on her end, so I thought asking here first to see if anyone has first-hand knowledge of the products and what the ...

Funniest Beauty Story-see MsgFeb 09, 2015
What is your funniest, most embarrassing, disastrous beauty story? I'll share mine. I had long, naturally wavy hair in high school (early 1970's), and back then curls and waves were not good. Straight hair was in. So, I used to iron my hair right smack dab on the ironing board. One time, I left it on too long in a particular spot, and I looked like I had a giant POOF right at my right ear. So, I was left with straight at the part, POOF by the ear, then straight below that. I also ...

The Hidden Beauty Behind Ryan's BudgetApr 07, 2011
"Paul Krugman was crunching numbers on Ryan's so-called budget and the Heritage Foundation projections it relies upon, and found something interesting. After he and others had reported the preposterously optimistic drop in unemployment (to under 3% within 10 years), it vanished. The unemployment percentage line in the Budget Analysis documentation was removed."http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/04/06/memory-hole... / That good old Heritage Foundation.  ...

Anyone Here In 30s And Without Kids?Oct 02, 2010
Sometimes I feel i'm the only one over 35 without children.  Most of my friends have them and almost everyone in my extended family.  I have never been in the position financially to have them, and I figure it wouldn't be fair.  I grew up in poverty and as an only child, and I do not want to lay that burden on someone else.  My husband and I might still adopt, or if we suddenly become rich and healthy in the next year or two produce one (lol).  Just wondering i ...

I Want To Help These Kids But Don't Know How.Aug 02, 2010
This is so confusing - My daughter has a best friend who comes from a family that is very close-knit but very dysfunctional at the same time.  Her friend, let's call her Sue, has a brother, let's call him Tim, who has had an on and off girlfriend for several years.  He's 29 and she's 21.  Two years ago she had a baby by another man and Tim decided to take on paternal responsibilities and he is the only father this child has ever known.  She has now gone an ...

Fighting KidsJan 19, 2012
My daughter is 13, son is 10.  They pick at each other constantly about the littlest thing!  This afternoon I sent them out to shovel snow and my daughter came in crying and said she would go out after her brother was done because he called her an idiot.  Told her she was not an idiot and called him in and told them both to not talk to each other while outside.  Now it is not even 6 o'clock and they are in their rooms for the night because I am out of options for punishm ...

Foster Kids..Jul 29, 2011
I know someone who took in 2 foster kids. She is a teacher and her husband works in construction. She doesn't need for anything. Her own lil girl (not a foster kid) is in pagaents a lot. She spends quite a bit on pagaents actually and eating out and just went on a short vacation/pagaent. They went out of town to a pagaent and vacationed for the weekend while there. They say they are broke though. Anyways, when they go on vacation they don't take the foster kids. Then she said s ...

Kids And SportsOct 26, 2010
I have a 9 year old boy who has played soccer for years.  I noticed this current season that "the light" is just not there when he's playing.  I asked him about it this morning and he told me that it's just not fun anymore.  I don't push him to play by any means but I am afraid that he won't go back to it in the spring.  I had a long talk with the coach this morning because he noticed the light was gone last night as well. Anyone else come across this?&nb ...

Kids And ADHDMay 18, 2011
My son is 8.  He has had a rough time in school.  He has always been a hyper kid but never to the point that we felt there would be a problem.  We just thought he was more active and and a very hands-on learner.  This school year (thankfully almost over) has been horrifying for him.  He says kids in class make fun of him, he is constantly getting into trouble.  The teachers say he cannot be quiet or stay in his seat and focus.  All of this worried us and we too ...

Kids.....opinionsApr 14, 2013
My child has social anxiety and has very few friends.  It is difficult for her to make friends, but once she does, she loves her friends.  It causes her a lot of stress and such at school, due to this, but it is getting better. She has this one friend, who is her best friend, she is 11 years old.  I have known this child since she was born, because her dad, who raises her as a single father, is very close friends with my husband.  There is no talking to the dad about the pro ...

Kids And LiceJun 20, 2013
Any opinions please?  My daughter has a friend who started coming over and I noticed she was continuously scratching her head A LOT, so I asked her to let me look in there and she had lice.  It wasn't a case that was just hard to get rid of, her head was crawling with TONS of lice!!!  I actually called and asked the girl's mom about it and she acted like she didn't even know she had lice, but said she would treat it.  Well, then my daughter gets lice, so I trea ...

How Do You Feel About Kids And CTs Or X-rays?Dec 08, 2009
A lot of doctors that I transcribe for are telling their patients as old as 18 not to get any kind of radiology done that they might not need because of the risk of cancer later in life.  When my son was 1 he fell down the basement stairs and the doctor had told me this, but also told me that the risk was very small and that it is better to know than not to know.  I think that CTs, X-rays, etc. are good things.  I have heard of so many stories where the person goes ...

Since We Were Kids, My Sister Has Been Ratting Me Out To Mom!Jul 11, 2011
As an adult, she hasn't changed that much.  Always looking for something to tell mom about me or just plain gossip about me to mom and anyone else who will isten.  As a young adult, when I still had the energy to have a fiery temper, I would fight with her.  After I had my second child, I decided to just not pay attention to her anymore and just ignore her BS.  Our kids are now teenagers and still my sister plays her games.  Today I finally blew like Mount St. Helen ...

Are Kids Out Of Their Mind These Days Or What??Oct 15, 2011
There is a neighborhood kid across the street that is in middle school and he and his friend are 'starting a business.'  I am all for kids having initative and working but they put out a flyer that they are starting a business and will walk your dog for 50 cents a minute.  Are you kidding me??  That is $30/hr!!!!!  I do not know many adults who make $30/hour.  I told my husband that I must be in the wrong business.  I know his mother and I am surprised tha ...

What Do You Think Of Kids Calling Their Parents By Their First NameJul 28, 2010
My BIL keeps referring to his mom (my MIL) by her first name.  He'll say "you know that Sharon moved the other day", or he'll say "I came home today so I could bring Sharon to the doctor".  The first time he said it I said whose Sharon?  He said you, know, my mom.  I said why don't you say "my mom" I know who you are talking about.  He told me that when he's talking to his coworkers they don't know who his mom is.   I'm sorry, I just ...

How To Introduce Dogs To Kids?Jun 11, 2010
I have gotten serious with my boyfriend to the point that we are considering moving in together.  I have 3 children (6, 5, and 3) and he has 2 small dachsunds that are pretty much his world.  My kids are with their dad for the summer and will be back shortly and the only thing I'm worried about is if his dogs will be okay with my kids.  I know one of them is just as loving as she can be, but the other is very picky about certain people.  Everyone I have introduced to her ...

Tumble Bus And Nursery KidsApr 27, 2012
Perhaps my niece should re-think this nursery school she had put her daughter in...One day a week the nursery school has the "tumble bus" come to the school. However, this is not an activity open to all children, only to the ones whose parents pay an extra $11 for it. Well, my niece forgot about it and didn't pay for her daughter to participate. Apparently they come to the classroom and pull out the children who get to do this activity. My niece was informed that her daughter was quite upse ...

Opinions On Kids And MedsSep 05, 2012
What is your opinion on kids on medications to keep them calm?  Especially boys.  Boys are boys, and they all inherently have "ADHD" until they're about 16.  <g> I think it's a matter of discipline, not drugs. Also, it just kills me that kids who have behavioral problems and who are in chaotic home environments, are drugged and therapied to death, then stuck in the same horrible nutty home environment.  Drug the kid, ship the kid to therapy, but keep the ...

Need To Change Things With My KidsJan 08, 2013
I posted this several months ago, but the thread got off-topic and I never got much in the way of "yea or nay" as far as answers....so will try again. I have 3 children in their 30s and 40s, and 7 grandchildren. I see all of them fairly often even though they all live some distance from me. I send all of them birthday and Christmas cards along with money and gifts. This Christmas in return I got handed a computer-generated card from my son while I was visiting their house, dropping off the f ...

Giving Kids MoneyFeb 21, 2013
Parents out there, how do you give your kids money, like how much and what all do you provide for them?  My son is 13 and my daughter is 9.  We had my son a cell phone for years, but lately we decided to cut back the $250 bill, so I told him to use the home phone. I still let him take my cell if he goes somewhere, so that I can contact him.  The kids never really got allowance until recently and I give my son $40 dollars per month and my daughter $20 dollars per month.  They ...

My Kids Just Left For A TripAug 01, 2014
Mind you, they are 22 and 25.  They are driving from upstate NY to Long Island to stay with friends and see a concert.  Now, each of them has been gone on their own, my son's been to the other end of the country on both a plane and train.  I think my problem with this trip is that they're together in his car.  I have these visions of a crash and losing both of them at the same time.   I know - silly, right?  Yes, I know it.  But a mom worries.   ...
