Going back to school

Looking into going back to school, but trying to decide which career choice to make, although only one is probably optional at tihs point as I have to work while going.

Anyway, I have filled out my FAFSA for one school and it was sent, but I am not registered as of yet. Now I want to fill out another FAFSA for the other school that I will probably end up going to, but a friend of mine told me I can't fill out more than one FAFSA for different schools. Is this correct? I don't think it is as my mother said she filled out a FAFSA for several schools before my sister picked which school she was accepted at and wanted to go to.

When you fill out your FAFSA (I filled mine out online) there is a section where you choose which schools you are enrolling in. If you want to include other schools on your FAFSA application, if you filled it out online, you can go back and "update" your information at any time, adding schools, deleting schools, make any changes.

I didn't qualify for any financial aid my first 2 semesters since I went part time. I will be getting a state grant in the fall since I will be able to go full time now.

Be sure to talk with a financial aid advisor at your school to ensure you are applying for all financial aid you may qualify for. FAFSA is federal, there are some state grants your school can help you apply for also, and some schools, even 2-year program schools, have scholarships that you'll have to individually apply for. May I ask what you went back to school for? I was going to do my LPN, but that requires full time, and I have bills to pay and my son to take care of so need to work. I am instead going to go for a CMA which does a lot of the same things an LPN does, but less money, but with the MT business I would be glad for a steady income with bennies and no offshoring.

I'm studying American Sign Language, hope to be an interpreter some day. I knew I had to find an escape plan from MT. I've had an interest in the field of interpreting since I was a kid. After meeting with the head of the local community college program, I decided to take the plunge and do it, especially when she told me she has employers waiting for the next graduate from her program.

I could only go part time at first. Then my company forced me to go part time, so now I can go full time with classes. It's tough financially, I still pay the latest utility bills first, lack of money is always on my mind.

Another reason I chose this new field is because it cannot be offshored or done by a computer. I just hope it pans out better than MT did.

Not sure if you are interested in Surgical Tech or not, but I've heard of a few MTs going back to school for that, and it seems like a field that has jobs available, would be especially good getting hired at a hospital with benefits.

Also don't know if you've been offered student loans. I haven't taken one out yet, but if push came to shove, I would just to get out of MT.

It seems with lack of work coming MTs way, you would think there was a shortage of patients. I've seen so many healthcare facilities opening up in my small town, seems they are everywhere. So CMA sounds like a good field to study. Hospitals and doctor's office may be eliminating the MTs, but they sure can't eliminate the CMAs, LPNs, etc.

I am considering returning to school but I have no idea what career to pursue. For anyone in their 40s who has started back, can you give me some insight as to how you decided upon your career, how difficult it is for you in general, are you still working while going? I have no college education save for a couple algebra classes I took for fun 20 years ago (I always was a bit of dork). At 51 years old, I have been doing MT for about 28 years. Out of high school I started in the kitchen of the local hospital, moved to a nurses' aide, and then moved to the hospital-trained transcription department, so I don't really have previous 'career' training. I'm considering doing the virtual school for my son next schoolyear, which will be his 6th grade year. I haven't told my child about Conn. She is not ready for that tragic reality. Hi all, My son's last day of school is today. Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I don't want video games and/or TV watching to be the main ingredient of his summer days.
