At least I don't have $300,000 debt in school loans

Posted: Mar 29, 2013

When I saw "Job Prospects are Dimming for Radiology Trainees," I was concerned because I was considering going back to school to become an x-ray tech or sonographer.  However, the NY Times article is referring to actual radiologists and the fact that their job market is taking the same kind of downturn as the one for MTs.  The words "sweat shops" actually appear in this article.  While the author downplays the role of offshoring to foreign entities, we all know that is the next logical step.

I've seen ads for radiology companies that have doctors in foreign countries reading the radiology studies during what would be our night shift.

Offshore - OP

Yes, the article talked about the nighthawk radiology services transmitting the images to American radiologists overseas. The author writes that "though outsourcing to India grabbed headlines, the big growth in teleradiology was domestic." I was just saying that the author seemed to be stressing the effect of the *domestic* services using doctors here working from their homes or American ones living abroad, and she seemed to be minimizing the impact of offshoring to *foreign* doctors. We all know *domestic" MTSOs that are increasing their offshore foreign labor by the day. Maybe the author is just naive, but I don't believe for one second that "domestic" radiology services are not continually adding offshore foreign radiologists to their labor pool while cutting back on using American radiologists. Just as we have seen in the MT industry, that's how they make the big bucks.

It would be interesting to see the difference in pay, if any, of American radiologists working at home here in the US versus American radiologists working abroad. I would bet, though, that both still make more (for now) than an offshore foreign radiologist doing the same work for a US-based nighthawk service.

I guess the American radiologists working from home or working over in India got tired of their last names and changed them to Reddy, Patel, Navichandra, Poori, etc. and also changed their first names to Krishna, Pyiush, Dilip, etc.

The average salary for Indian radiologists in India is $35,000 a year, 1/8 to 1/10 the salary of a US based radiologist, and they can read imaging as good as the next country.

That's one of the problems in this country. Just about everyone, including the author of that article, seriously downplays the outsourcing of jobs to other countries, and then one day in the not to distant future Americans suddenly realize that there is no longer a market here for American radiologists, American call centers, American manufacturing, American job this, American job that, you name it, but by the time that they realize they were being misled by authors of articles like that one, it's too late to get that market back, and it's gone for good or reduced to a next to nothing market in the US in terms of employment opportunities.

and really looking forward to breaking out of this job that's not going anywhere but down. Just finishing up my second semester and looking forward to just one more year. With this degree, I can access so many other areas of study all of which make you more marketable. Nope, don't want to be a radiologist, but would be happy with being able to x-rays, mammos, CT, CT angiograms, MRIs and possibly even back to school for ultrasound, nuclear medicine or radiation therapy. Not a bad living. Maybe not be a physician/radiologist's salary, but definitely a whole lot better than a MT salary.

Uncomfortable With DebtAug 09, 2011
Does Debt Make You Uncomfortable? After years of being in debt where 90% was not even yours, you feel so much better being debt free. Then something comes up where you have to be in debt again with 80% having nothing to do with you with worry of where that could end up. Really not a fan of debt, I rather use funds that exist, however when something medical comes up there is only so much that can be done, even being needed ones does not have to be comfortable with it. ...

Anybody See The Article On The National Debt?Jan 17, 2011
$14T and growing at a rate of $4 billion a day! Isn't that just ducky! The government borrows 41 cents for every dollar it spends and we, the people,  every man, woman, and child, equals $45,300. I'm so glad my 3-yo grandson will have a good life. Has the TARP money been applied to this debt? I didn't see anything in any article on that. What to do?
