Out of school ideas for summer?

Posted: May 22, 2013

Hi all,

My son's last day of school is today.  Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I don't want video games and/or TV watching to be the main ingredient of his summer days. We don't have any kids in the area his age to play with, and he is the only one at home anymore so no siblings to play with. He is 10 and it is hard to keep him from getting bored and wanting to "veg" all day.

Any ideas appreciated!

Thanks!

Summer sports? - Been there

[ In Reply To ..]
Many Parks and Rec departments have summer sports programs - some offer free tennis lessons, softball camps and the like. The Y usually has good programs, day camp, etc. and other things for kids to do. Do you have a local swimming pool? Maybe he could earn some money by offering to be a pet sitter/dog walker (my dream job by the way except that it doesn't pay very much)! Just some suggestions, hope it helps.

Where are his school friends? - see msg

A boy his age needs friends. What about his school friends? It's not healthy for him to just hang out with nobody but family. I like the YMCA idea, anything where he can hang out with kids his own age and blow off some stink, run around, swim, play.

On the days he's not socializing and getting exercise, if he's artistic, you could play into that and set him up with whatever artistic thing he likes to do. My newphew loved to draw, and on rainy days, my sister would set him up with art pads and pastels.

Oh, we plan to have lots of play dates with his buddies, too, but on the days we can't arrange something I just wanted to get some ideas for him to do himself or us together when I'm not working. I have been an MT at home with him since he was born so have done various things each summer, but it always seems to be a struggle keeping him busy. He is not into group sports, but does enjoy swimming so we will probably be visiting our local swimming pool. We don't have a local YMCA as we are in a small town and the nearest one is 30 minutes away so not real convenient.

Oh, good - Glad he will play

That's good, glad about the fact that he'll see some kids his own age. Swimming is a great sport for a kid to do. Not all boys and girls are into group sports. If you have a big tree in your yard, you could attach something to it so he could hit a ball by himself--we used to play tether ball. I forget how it went, but just one person could play. You could Google it and see what comes up.

No free or low cost community or village day camp? Some libraries - do summer activities. NM

Check out your library for museum/activity passes. Ours has quite a few and they are good for discounted or free admissions. we make a day trip out of a couple of them every summer.

When I was 10, all my friends went to summer camp, - and my parents wouldnt let me go. (S/M)

I spent the entire summer with lumber salvaged from scrap piles at new housing sites, my dad's tools (no power tools), and my imagination. I built a flat, wide-based, big-wheeled go-kart-type vehicle with a mast and a sail on it, and once finished and tested, on Santa Ana wind days, it could go scary-fast! (And I was a girl, not a boy).

Tools, a project, and imagination can fill an entire summer.

Does your town have any Park and Rec summer camps? Here we have a plethora of choices. My 11-year-old daughter goes to a rec center that has a pool and they go on a field trip once a week. It cost $20 earlier in the year to reserve a week during the summer break. I did them all so I would have options.

Then when she goes, I pay $80 for the week. So she gets to be around kids her age, swim, go on field trips, and take classes all for $100 a week. A bargain if you ask me and she loves going.

Kids Visiting In Summer, Still Having To WorkApr 12, 2013
and I am one who works straight through without taking time out of the day. I know I can get Netflix for them, they have their Ipads, can get some crafty things to make and some games like puzzles and the lot. I know this sounds like a lot to me but I don’t want them bored to tears. We are planning trips while they are here but then the work days are still hanging around in between.
