Listening to Rush this a.m. He was saying Michele Obama should abandon her attempts at improving nutrition in the schools. He said children refuse to eat the tofu that Michele wants them to eat. What is the point of warping this discussion beyond recognition? I visited my nephew's school and I was appalled at the school lunch. Chicken nuggets and pizza, etc. I have never heard Michelle talk about replacing this junk with tofu. Why not just go back to basic lunches with vegetables and nutritious foods like sandwiches and fruits? I dont understand why he wants to poison the well like this. It is a legitimate concern.

I just watch them. It is terrible, and it's not because it is pizza and chicken nuggets (I wish). They provide lots of vegetables. This means, they dump green beans, corn, peas, etc. straight from a can and heat it up. The stuff just gets thrown away. I don't see public schools ever being provided with the money that would allow them to actually cook a decent healthy meal. They are very budgeted. I personally feel like this should be handled on local level, not federal.

and some very healthy foods like fresh salads. The problem is that they require the child to order the fresh salad in advance and normally I send my son's lunch to school. The days that he eats in the cafeteria are usually because I forgot to make him lunch or he forgot to take it, thus, he can never order the healthier fresh fruits and vegetables, but they are available daily.

actually loves salads says the salad bar in the high school is disgusting. The salads in the elementary school basically consist of lettuce and tomatoes, and of course, ranch dressing is usually what is offered, talk about fattening. I won't even eat a salad like that. My son has only ate from the cafeteria maybe 4 days this school year as the food is that bad. The only things that are decent enough to eat are the unhealthy foods. Unfortunately, most of the cafeteria workers where I am from don't know how to make decent tasting healthy foods, not to mention it is not in the budget. I'm really not someone who gets upset over school lunches, though. That is one meal out of the day that I have to choice to buy or not.

M Obama was pushing for different school lunches (and yes, there were some with tofu). It was a big bust and the kids threw out most of the so-called healthy choiced and would not eat lunch at all. Bean sprouts, tofu,protein burgers, some other funky things were on there (it was a pretty big list). No problem with the fruit, but how many parents actually make healthy food at home. Bet you would see a lot of hamburgers, pizza, lasagna, and few salads and fruits in many parent's kitchens.

that was aired some time last year in which the chef, Jamie Oliver went to the poorest school district in the country and worked with them to improve the food they served to the kids. Too much to write about here but if they ever replay it, try to watch. I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

As for Rush, he probably just wants all kids to look like him.

I saw it when he was in LA, and I was ticked that the season was interrupted for re-broadcasts of Dancing With the Stars (really ABC, you needed to air it AGAIN like the 1st time around wasn't painful enough???). I just checked Netflix for anyone who might have been interested, and it isn't available to download or on DVD as far as I can tell, but it was worth a shot.

Anyhow, if you do have Netflix and the sorry state of the food industry in this country is something you find interesting, check out Food Inc. I'm a bit of a documentary junkie, and Food Inc. is excellent (yet infuriating).

We have little respect for food in this country, the result of which has led to kids LEARNING to eat poorly.

There are myriad ways to make healthy food yummy and delicious to kids. The fact is, school systems prefer to spend their money on costly, preprepared foods rather than investing in cooks who could not only provide healthier foods, but could cut the actual food costs.

Look at school lunches in almost any other country that has a longstanding culture. So many Americans seem to want everything to be like an amusement park - be it work, school, food, or sex.

Actually, lacing into "Moochelle" (and for those who haven't heard him, he pronounces it Mooch-elle not Moooo-chelle as in a cow which would make him a bigger hypocrite... like that's even possible) over her efforts to improve children's nutrition was not the point of his rant. Your post prompted me to investigate further which led me to Rush's website (thank you for that BTW... now I have to go shower for a 2nd time today to wash off the funk). Turns out that Rush thinks the First Lady should give up her silly quest to have the "government tell you what to eat" and instead just sit back, be a wife (aka... know her place), and set an example to all the poor folk out there of what a proper family unit should be. Being married is the ticket out of poverty, dontcha know. Santorum thinks soo too... must be true. Of course, he doesn't forget to mention poor black folks after stating that he isn't talking about poor black folks.

"I'm not talking poor black people. I'm talking poor people in general. But there's no denying -- (interruption) Yeah, I do hate that I have to say it, but it's necessary. There's no denying, though, that our so-called social safety net has destroyed the black family. According to Rush, the First Lady should set the example of: See, I graduated high school and got married before I had kids! You can do it too!!!

And to further point out Rush's hypocrisy, given that he has battled weight issues himself, he should take no other stance but to be supportive of any program that tries to teach children how to eat and exercise properly. This would save these children from potential life-long medical (and psychological) issues and would save the taxpayers from having to pay for all the swell diabetes-related, orthopedic-related, CV-related, etc., conditions they will ultimately suffer from secondary to obesity.

Also, his argument that the "government is telling us what to eat" is a load of bull. Government involvement (on behalf of various special interests) is one of the reasons that the crap foods are so readily available to all of us - including our children - in the first place. Therefore, Rush does not, despite the generousness of them, have a leg to stand on when it comes to the big government involvement load of bull he feeds to his listeners to keep 'em good and worked up and tuned in every day.

Obesity is a problem that is affecting our CHILDREN. We can:
1. Do nothing.
2. Take the Limbaugh plan to goal BMI by popping pills (go figure) and crash dieting until hospitalized for chest pain.
OR
3. Teach our children proper nutrition and give them access to healthy foods at least while in school.

Pick one.

All of the pasta is whole grain, as is all of the pizza. Lots of fresh fruit, etc. My kids hate the pizza but they will eat the pasta. They offer salads every day starting in middle school. There is also a rule that any school parties can only have X amount of sugar/junk food. The rest has to be fresh fruit, cheese, etc. I don't know where the rules came from (PTA/district/state) but they do seem to encourage healthy eating.

Just finished week 2 on the Shaun T Insanity Program and I MUST SAY that this is the BEST program I have ever seen.
