trouble at school

Posted: May 6, 2010

Just got a phone call from my 4th grade daughter's teacher.  My daughter is in trouble for selling a Sillybandz to another child for $1.  The teacher said it was price gouging and wasn't "fair" (rolleyes)

Time to teach some economics.

They should ban them. Your daughter is wrong! - sm

They are supposedly trading them, not buying them. Are you saying you think your daughter should be selling things at school at a higher rate than the store? (roll eyes)

seriously... - mt

that's capitalism at its finest! LOL

I think OP was simply meaning the comment from the teacher was silly, maybe, and that she was making a big deal about it?

Another suggestion - Alice

Seriously, if this were me, and I really do envy you here...I would find a network marketing company or direct sales, sign up, and let your daughter help. It sounds like she has real talent, and with a little nurturing, the sky is the limit. However, I would suggest that she not promote the products at school. Those people are not always too smart, but full of prejudice and pre-conceived notions, rather oppressive in their thinking and management style, not to mention extremely careful due to fear of how other parents will respond. I'm sure they have their good reasons, but it is best to teach our children to not challenge them.
My husband was busted for this in the 1970s! - Hayseed

When he was a kid in school, he used to buy gum at the store and sell it at school by the individual piece for like 10 cents. He got busted for selling gum, as kids weren't allowed to sell anything that wasn't for a school-approved fundraiser, at school and was actually sent home for 2 days because of it.

Some things never change.

haha- yes I do remember those days as well of selling rubberbands, etc. All I can say is power to the purple people! lol
When I was a kid, we got busted for having a swap-meet. - sm - Rocky Raccoon

It was in elementary school, and that spring we couldn't use the playground because the walnut grove the school & playground had built on top of was trying to re-establish itself, and the whole playground had to be dug up and repaved. So at recess we sat in the shade of the classroom arcades and played jacks, board games, hopscotch, etc. My friend and I were always trading toys & stuff with other kids, so we decided to start having a trading-post or swap meet at the ping-pong tables. No money changed hands - only bartering item for item. It was a huge hit. And of course, because of its success, the teachers banned us from doing it. :(

What's with this sillybandz craze? My son's teacher banned them in her classroom. I thought this was a big deal around here. Come to find out I traveled 2 hours south of here and the moms there are going crazy with the kids wanting them. Is this nationwide? It seems to have started here 2 weeks ago and my son is crazy over them. The guy at CVS said they have been sold out for a month, and my son's doctor said it has been going on like wildfire... even she is driving everywhere finding them.
How did this craze start and how did it spread so quickly? Regarding your post, I understand about selling them. They are becoming hard to find and on top of that some kids cannot afford them. My son just gives them to kids (even though we are broke, I somehow find enough to feed his habit). I even wear them lols.
But seriously, I have not seen anything like this in years...I would like to know how to get something as popular as this and sell something? Is this nationwide? Worldwide? Inquiring minds want to know!

update - yes the rolleyes

was referring to the teacher wanting everything to be "fair." I am so sick of that.

The teacher wasn't upset about my daughter selling something at school (as there is no such rule against it), only because she thought the price was too high. She thought 25-50 cents a piece would have been "fair." Ok, whatever. You can't even buy a bag of the original Sillybandz in our city right now. All the stores are sold out. It's a simple concept of supply and demand. It's not like the school isn't selling their inflated $1 pencils and $1 popsicles after lunch. Talk about enticing the kids on a daily basis.

I think my daughters are going to be very successful entrepeneurs some day. Alice, I will continue to encourage them every chance I get. Thank you.

I remember trading various things and selling gum too, but I guess I never got busted! lol

Hee hee. my 15-year-old daughter . . . - mt

took the last of the peanut butter granola bars to her friend at school cuz they were her favorite. Her friend turned around and sold them to a boy for like a buck a piece or something like that!!! I know this boy though and I am sure HE offered HER the money for the bars. I laughed, but told my daughter that we should give, not sell granola bars to classmates. But geez, I was thinking how ingenious!! 100% profit for this girl!!! Kind of rude, but whatever!!!!

Gramps TroubleFeb 16, 2011
So just a few months ago, my grandma passed away and it was very sudden. My grandparents were married for 67 years and she predeceased gramps. My grandpa was never the kind of man to "take care" of himself, meaning grams always did the cooking and cleaning , took care of the kids and so on, she was a good wife. Now that she has passed, dealing with gramps has become a real issue. I"m sure he is very lonely after having been with someone that long and suddenly without. But he is already contempla ...

He does yell and scream and sometimes throw things, not at me or her, but still. &nbs ...

Why We're In Trouble In This Country.Aug 25, 2015
We're in trouble because democracy absolutely depends on an electorate that is sufficiently well educated to be able to assess the claims of candidates, to reject the falsehoods and misinformation that political campaigns, their supporters and the press spew into the atmosphere, darkening the sky in an effort to hide the truth from the light of day, and having the ability and the intellectual honesty to objectively judge the character of those who aspire to political office. Democracy is f ...

Illinois is broke and continues to flirt with junk bond status. But the state’s financial woes aren’t stopping 63,000 government employees from bringing home six-figure salaries and higher. Whenever we open the books, Illinois is consistently one of the worst offenders. Recently, we found auto pound supervisors in Chicago making $144,453; nurses at state corrections earning up to $254,781; junior college presidents making $465,420; university doctors earning $1.6 million; and 84 small-to ...
