How is it possible to go back to school and pay your bills?

Posted: May 9, 2010

I really want to go back to school but I am a single mom with a mortgage.  Has anyone in my situation gone back to school?  Does anyone know of any aid or programs to pay for school and help me pay my bills?  I think I am living in La La Land thinking I can do this!!!

I did. Raised 2 kids alone, worked FT and FT school. - sm

You should apply for financial aid (FASFA):

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

This will determine your financial need status and give you any federal grants (you don't have to repay a grant).

Be very, very careful of the student loans you take out though. It will cost you dearly later as you are liable for those for life until paid in full.

If you are going into nursing or teaching, you may be able to get into a loan forgiveness program (you work in certain areas or meet certain conditions and they forgive/pay off a % of your loans).

Apply for scholarships. Research scholarships and grants for single parents, etc.

You can do it. I did. You just have to have a lot of energy, determination, the right priorities, and dedicate yourself to the process.

Good luck.

Do what the other poster said about financial aid and if your financial situation warrants it, you will qualify for the grants as well and then basically after your tuition/books/fees are paid, the school will release the rest of the money for you to pay for your bills. Depending on the school, how much you receive in financial aid and grants, and how many credits you take and how expensive your books are, you could receive up to $3500 back every semester, that's what I get. Also, some schools offer daycare grants that assist you with your daycare bill (my college does).

I am and you can do it if you are careful - StartrekMT

I too am a single mom but I pay rent. I am going back for my master's so I am on all loans. I tried to transcribe, go to school and raise my son but I got so bogged down with everything my transcribing got less and less, and so did my grades! So, I tried this last semester just to do school. My loan money comes quarterly. So, before it came in I made sure to afford a rent, and only have internet, lights, water, car insurance, cell. I keep everything to a minimum. When I get my loan refund after tuition, I pay the rent ahead of time until the next loan disbursement is due. This makes the home secure and my landlord happy and me secure. Then, I do the same with the tv/internet, water, and I pay the lights and by putting the amount I figure for the next couple of months for each in an envelope and mark "lights, cable, etc." (cash). Every 2 weeks is the child support and I figure that totally for groceries and maybe something nice for my son (silly bands, clay). Then, I take the small amount left over for emergencies and leave in my student account. The only time I can really go spending is Good Will (tea cup hunting) once a week or twice monthly on my day out for me, which is fun. My son goes to visitation and his dad and grandma take him places, and they help that way.
Someday I may try fitting part work again into my schedule but I find there is less stress by planning ahead on a fixed income. I guess it is the way I will have to live b/c once the loans come due, well, I'll live as an old lady on my job and by the time the loans are paid off I will be in heaven! Hope these ideas help. Good luck to you.

Back To School . . . Aug 13, 2010
It is that time again.  School is about to begin and we will be sending our children into the classroom to be with educators who we think are safe for our children to be around.  Please, please, please, listen to your children.  If they feel uneasy about a teacher/situation, listen; and do something about it! At the end of the last school year I posted on this board because I felt and my child felt uncomfortable about changing a shirt in the classroom for a field trip.  Almos ...

Going Back To SchoolMay 25, 2013
Looking into going back to school, but trying to decide which career choice to make, although only one is probably optional at tihs point as I have to work while going. Anyway, I have filled out my FAFSA for one school and it was sent, but I am not registered as of yet. Now I want to fill out another FAFSA for the other school that I will probably end up going to, but a friend of mine told me I can't fill out more than one FAFSA for different schools. Is this correct? I don't thi ...

no freaking clue what to go for though! I have 2 classes to get my associates.  I don't know where to go from there.  Everything I can think of just bores me to tears.  I would only have 2 years to get my batchelor's but what on earth could I study? THe only thing I think i would like is Vet tech but that doesn't even pay as much as MT.  I have also thought about social work but I just don't think i can do that anymore.  Plus there is no $$ in that ei ...

Looking For Anyone In Their 40s Who Have Started Back To School (sm)Jan 16, 2011
I am considering returning to school but I have no idea what career to pursue.  For anyone in their 40s who has started back, can you give me some insight as to how you decided upon your career, how difficult it is for you in general, are you still working while going?  I absolutely stink at math so I am terrified in that aspect but otherwise not really worried about it.  Any information, ideas, advice would be greatly, greatly appreciated! ...

Question For Those Going Back To SchoolJun 25, 2010
I have no college education save for a couple algebra classes I took for fun 20 years ago (I always was a bit of dork).  At 51 years old, I have been doing MT for about 28 years.  Out of high school I started in the kitchen of the local hospital, moved to a nurses' aide, and then moved to the hospital-trained transcription department, so I don't really have previous 'career' training.   Are any of you going back to school starting from scratch, so to speak?&n ...

Employment, Bills, Bills, Bills!Mar 05, 2010
My husband and I need all the prayer we can get.  I have been out of work for a year now due to outsourcing.  He returned from a year long deployment in Iraq last July and has been looking for employment and found a job that is now not working him and his unemployment ran out right before that and now they are saying he cannot file for unemployment again because that would be considered quitting the job he has now although he has not worked in 3 weeks!  Everything is on the verge ...

Civil Rights Bills Passed ForAug 21, 2017
Food for thought: “I maintain that every civil rights bill in this country was passed for white people, not for black people. For example, I am black. I know that. I also know that while I am black I am a human being. Therefore I have the right to go into any public place. White people don’t know that. Every time I tried to go into a public place they stopped me. So some boys had to write a bill to tell that white man, “He’s a human being; don’t stop him." That bill was for the whit ...

Big Banks Aim Fees At Those Who Avoid Debt, Pay Bills On TimeOct 27, 2009
Update (at bottom): Senator Dodd calls for credit card rate freeze until new rules take effect Did you pay your bills on time this month? Avoided taking on unnecessary debt? Well, there's a fee for that. Anticipating the implementation of the Credit Card Accountability, Responsibility and Disclosure Act in February of next year, big banks are stepping up their aggressive treatment of those who hold cards that may be deemed too generous, or those who are studious in making payments. I'm Sick And Tired Of Paying Hidden Fees On My Bills Oct 22, 2013

Senate Fails To Pass Modest Gun Control Bills. NmJun 21, 2016
WASHINGTON -- Just over a week after the worst mass shooting in American history, the Senate failed Monday to advance a pair of modest and popular gun violence reform measures. One would have barred gun sales to anyone who has been on a terrorist watch list in the previous five years or who is "reasonably" suspected of posing a terrorist threat. Another would have tightened the background check system to cover the so-called gun show loophole and all internet gun sales. About 90 ...

Need Opinions Please About School (sm)Jan 24, 2011
I am currently looking into returning to school like so many other MTs out there.  There are programs where you can get an Associates Degree in Healthcare Management (basically medical records), which I am really not interested in because, as I see it, most hospitals are trying to cut down their medical records departments to as slim of staff as possible, plus with the integration of EMR, I just do not see this being a lucrative field.  IF, big big IF here, I were to enter into this pr ...
