My Cats Have NEVER Been Healthier!

Posted: Jan 21, 2012

Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc.  One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues.  But overall they are healthy cats.

A new Pet Club opened next door to the Wal-Mart, and I have been buying dry food there in large (30 lb. or so) bags to save some money.  Plus they have a $5 off coupon on the back of the Fry's receipts...

Anyway, the sales people there tried to sell me this stuff called Instinct, but it was a little more expensive and I went with the cheaper foods (buying 2 brands, an "expensive" one and a cheaper one, and mixing them together in about a 4:1 ratio).

Finally, last month I broke down and bought a bag of Instinct (as the more expensive food) and the usual cheaper food for an extender.

The changes in my cats are nothing short of PHENOMENAL!  Coats are so shiny you almost need shades to look at my black cat.  :)   Both cats have the shiniest fur you ever saw, with those little white areas (healthy skin) where the fur divides, like a mink coat.  Shedding is decreased, which means fewer coughing of hairballs AND fewer mats in my long-haired cat.  Poop is smaller and less frequent, which means not as much smell or scooping (which also saves on cat litter).  Both cats have increased energy and they just seem "happier" -- even though they were already spoiled rotten!  I have stopped giving them the omega-3 supplement that I had them on because frankly, on this food they don't need it.

Because of the above, after going through the first bag of Instinct I bought another bag.  This time I went with the Rabbit formula (sales girl explained that rabbit protein is something they don't get so don't have allergies to it).  I still just can't get over how healthy these cats look and act!

Instinct has no grains in it, and grains are what cause your pets to gain weight (leading to diabetes), and many develop allergies to them.  Read the ingredients of most dry pet food, and the primary/first ingredient usually listed is "corn."  That's because it's CHEAP.  I still have the less expensive food that contains grains that I mix with the Instinct, but they are only getting a nominal amount of it.

I have contacted the company, and they sent me a coupon to use at the Pet Club near me.  As long as I can afford it I will keep my babies on this miracle food!

DISCLAIMER:  I don't work for the company or anything.... I'm just kind of excited so just had to share!  I hope this post helps fellow cat owners here.  :)

My husband just brought home a bag of the rabbit formular this week, and they really are enjoying it.

We have been giving them Spot's Stew by Halo, which they like - and we like the wholesome ingredients (no wheat, no fillers, etc.)

We recently found a wet-food rabbit that they love, so I was excited to discover a dry-foot rabbit.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks for sharing. I agree completely. It's - amazing to me that SM

many people have no idea what is in some of their pets food. Purina commercials are all over the place, and this is one of the worst foods for cats and dogs. Some even use euthanized animal parts in their food!! I wish people would just spend a bit more on the food. Look online, google compare cat or dog foods, you will be amazed.

Thank you! - CMTx2

Thanks for the info! One of my boys has terrible food allergies and can't tolerate grains, even oats, or chicken. He turns up his nose at the duck and pea formula. I will try out the rabbit Instinct. :)

Food for rabbits?? - Duh, here

[ In Reply To ..]
Do you mean it is actually food for rabbits or it's a "rabbit formula" for cats?? MUST find some of this for my kids - have a couple sneezy, wheezy types, which I think has to do with their diet. Pleeze, pleeze 'splain this to me.

it is cat food made with rabbit meat~ - bunny

I've never heard of Pet Club...does anyplace else - L&L

sell this. I'm going to check it out on line. I give them wet food and leave dry food out in case they decide to refuse the wet food. I tried the Spot's Stew, but they wouldn't go near it. Cats are bred carnivores and really do not need the grains. As far as corn, I think it was in one of Micheal Pollan's books that he noted most human food is now primarily corn based and that is not healthy for us.

PetCo sells it, but it's expensive - Happy MT Robin

[ In Reply To ..]
It's VERY expensive at least on Petco.com - $38.99 for a 12 pound bag. I have 8 cats. That 12 pound bag would last me approx. 1.5 weeks.

I paid - FelineLady

[ In Reply To ..]
At my local Pet Club, the regular price is $38.99 for a 30-lb. bag. With the $5 off store coupon, I paid $33.99 plus tax for that 30 pounds. Now I have the manufacturer's coupon to stack onto the store coupon.

If I were you, I would not pay that PetCo price. Plus there is the shipping cost...

I would call around at local stores like PetSmart, etc. The manufacturer's website probably has retail locations listed as well.
Your local Pet Club is not national - Happy MT Robin
[ In Reply To ..]
I did actually look at their website. I'm not a fan of the ultra premium foods. I tried my cats on Wellness and my older cat lost so much weight he looked almost skeletal. Petsmart doesn't carry it - they rarely carry the "boutique" foods and just recently started carrying Wellness. I didn't find the "benefits" to be worth the extra cost.

I think that Pet Club that you have in your area is local. I tried Googling it and came up with some various local options, but nothing national like a Sam's or Costo for pets.

I'm glad you like the food. I'll stick with the Iams.
I neither stated nor implied that it was! - FelineLady

My cats were on another grain-free food a few years ago, and one of them did lose a lot of weight. Hence I am still mixing in a little of the grain-containing, "extender" food, which also doubles as a slight cost-cutting measure.

Glad you like the Iams.

Have a good day.

my MIL's cat, who is staying w/us until May, could have food allergies b/c he itches his ears so much that they bleed. No mites or fleas. At first I thought it was nerves from coming to live with us and our bully cat. I'm going to see if the Instinct helps him any.

Ever try Canidae? - sm

is also a pet food company that is holistic and natural. I have personally witnessed the owner eat a few kibbles of his company's pet food straight out of a bag more than once. I know him through racing. When you go to their offices in Corona, CA, every employee who has a pet brings them to work. Each cubicle has a pet gate across it which can be used or not used. I have tried all of the ultra premiums and high end foods, and I like the Canidae best - and not because I know the owner LOL.

Thanks for the tip! I have two long-haired lovely cats and one short-hair. I would love to find cat food which helps cut down on shedding and, of course, I want them to be as healthy as possible. They eat like little pigs, though, so it will be difficult to afford it. Plus, hubby isn't nearly as concerned as I am as far as the felines are concerned. I'm going to give it a try, though. It's all in the planning, and he doesn't have to know the cost if I do it right.

Try looking at one of the compare cat food - sites online. SM

Grain-Free Pet Food - Kat Lady

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, the grain-free cat foods are great. I switched to them after the horrible US pet food recalls in March, 2007. One thing to watch out for though is sometimes certain cats tend to get constipated on a diet of only grain-free, particularly if feeding only dry foods. So, you might want to add in some canned food if that becomes an issue. There are sites run by pet lovers that keep tab on any pet food recalls. You can also sign up for recall notices from http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/newpetfoodrecalls/

I get my food now at the local farm store - sm

Started with Taste of the Wild for the dog, made with Bison meat. Read about it, and/or the Blue Buffalo brand. Now will have to switch my cats over!! The dog LOVES her food. Daughter is a vet and she had a dog with mild allergies, itching all the time, and now her dog does not itch. I believe she is using the Blue Buffalo brand. They have great dog treats too.

Any suggestions for seniors? - MT

[ In Reply To ..]
I have 7 cats and 5 of them are on a grain-free diet and never better, but I have 2 who are 16 and the vet told me to keep them off the high-protein,grain-free food due to slight rise in creatinine. I tried Science diet for over 11, and they hate it. Any grain-free for seniors? I looked at Petco and haven't found any.

I find it interesting what people name their pets and how they selected a specific pet  name.  Mine are both pure black and litter mates.  At first we were gravitating towards names that would fit black cats one of which was Amos and Andy just t o name one.  They ended up with the names of JJ and Mojo.  JJ was short for Jimmie Johnson (my husband is a NASCAR fan) and Mojo was named related to blues music, which we attend a blues festival every year in Main ...

How Do You Get Rid Of Cats?Oct 20, 2009
No, I don't mean putting them in a sack with a brick and throwing them in a river... but how do you keep them from hanging around your home? My next door neighbor has started putting food out for strays and now there are 3 half grown kitten-cats that are hanging around not just her apartment, but mine too. Yesterday I sat down my groceries on my front step while I got my key out and they were nosing around my bags. Then when a few minutes later when I went to take out trash, they followed m ...

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Anyone Have Cats?Oct 28, 2010
I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some s ...

Cats And KeyboardsJun 07, 2012
Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways? In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys. Heck, for all ...

How To Shave My CatsOct 14, 2013
Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. Just kidding about this but it is a lot that my hubby tells me to use the commercial vacuum we have to get it up. I did have a company that would shave the cats down about once a year but now they do not have groomers there any longer. Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? I am using "guaranteed" sprays to clean and discourage them but it is still happening. They do still use their litter boxes somewhat, but not as much as usual. Thanks ...

We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Question For People With Old Cats.........Jul 19, 2013
Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason?  My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason.  She has all sorts of different normal vocalizations, yet when she yowls she sounds distressed.  But when I go to investigate, I'll find that she's:  Talking to her water dish as she dips her paws into it. Warning! Chinese Jerky Making Dogs/cats SickOct 23, 2013
This is BS! (CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a message for veterinarians and pet owners: If dogs or cats get sick after eating jerky pet treats, let us know.
