Question for people with old cats.........

Posted: Jul 19, 2013

Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason?  My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason.  She has all sorts of different normal vocalizations, yet when she yowls she sounds distressed.  But when I go to investigate, I'll find that she's:

Talking to her water dish as she dips her paws into it.

Talking to her blanket as she kneads it or scrunches it up to sleep on.

Talking to the ceiling.

Talking to her food dish.

When I talk to her and ask her what's wrong, she'll look surprised, and switch over to her normal conversational meow, as if to say, "Moi?  That wasn't ME yowling, that must've been somebody else!"

Her hearing appears to be fine, as does her eyesight.  She still occasionally gets frisky and gallops around the house.  She's very affectionate and cuddly, & tends to follow me from room to room.  Doesn't appear to have any pain anywhere.

In the middle of the night, if I hear her yowl, in another room, if I call out her name and say "Pssshhhttt.....pssshhhhttt!", she then quiets down and goes back to sleep.

Any similar experiences?

You are lucky to have a vocal cat - just saying

I have several cats of varying ages and while they will all complain if they need to ;) only some will vocalize a lot. I love a talkative cat myself :)

One thing: sometimes cats in pain purr heavily - so this is actually something to watch for - as well as not eating, drinking, etc and litter mistakes.

Sounds like you just have a chatty catty

Yes my 10 year old male has been doing that lately. - SM - Freebie

I'm wondering if they have the same kind of depression that people go through, I know I get down when it's hot outside and they don't like being shut up in the A/C with the windows closed so I'm hoping it's that. He wasn't like this in previous years but he's driving me nuts. It's like he's doing it just to hear himself or something. He's also gotten really demanding about everything.

Yes, mine sounds kind of like yours... - Miss Placed Semicolon

though she doesn't seem unhappy. She and my other cat want NO PART of going outside.. they're strictly indoor kitties. Sometimes I think she likes the sound of her own fog horn (I mean voice!) The only other thing I was wondering about is if she's clearing her sinuses. She's an extreme-faced Persian with a microscopic little nose. She's always been that way with the sinuses, however - no changes there. When she sleeps, she snores like a drunk longshoreman.

And like the other reply stated, she does like to talk - everything from her booming midnight yowls, to silent meows. She's always been a big purrer, too, but only when she's happy.

This is the first cat I've had that's gotten to this age, so sometimes she can be pretty mystifying. She's due for a checkup soon, so will bring that up with the vet, as well. I want her to be healthy and live a long, happy life - she's my extra-special little buddy!

I had an elderly cat that would walk through the upstairs hall at night yowling. I took him to the vet, who checked his thyroid, as apparently that sometimes is a cause, but it was normal. Vet said sometimes when their hearing/vision isn't as acute as they age they like to reassure themselves, I guess by talking to themselves. The cat lived to 18-1/2.

That is what I think is going on w/my 17yo - kitty.

He yowls from 4:30 am to whenever we get out of bed. Then he sits outside the bathroom and yowls. He has poor hearing, poor vision, two bad knees, and asthma. He always has fresh food, clean water and a clean litter box, both upstairs and down, and still he yowls. He goes to the vet once a month, so there is nothing else going on.

He also has a very indignant meow - when we don't get

out of bed in time to see what he is howling about.

Wandering meows - cat lover

[ In Reply To ..]
We had a cat start doing something similar when he was about 14. Our vet called it the wandering meows. She said it's not uncommon in older cats. He was still pretty healthy, though you could tell his joints were getting stiff. Anyway... he'd wander into a room, do this goofy meoooorrrww, walk around a bit (possibly a bit confused??), then head back to the family room.

Different than his usual I-own-the-house meowing, where he'd very purposely walk into a room, meow very clearly, then go on to the next room - kind of like staking his claim.

I kind of assumed it was like cat dementia. He personality changed a bit - less King Cat and more laid back, but still sweet and loving all the way to the end.

LOL! You could be describing my tom - to a tee...

He's from the pound, and I don't think he's even that old, but will sometimes just yowl and howl for no apparent reason. Sometimes I half expect him to start forming words! He is especially vocal when he wants his breakfast at 6 a.m. Mine is also very affectionate and cuddly too.

We have had very old cats - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
We have had old cats. The oldest did this "maaarrrooww" all day long sometimes. He was 18 and "maaarrroowwed" until he died at 21. We're not sure why, but interestingly, after he died, the next eldest "maarrroowed" until he died.

There were 4 all together, and while we don't know why the first one did the noise, all the others did the noise AFTER the one in the house that was doing it died. Kind of like a noise was missing, so whoever was "king of the castle" at the time, did the noise.

I have a very young cat that does that - I do not think it's anything to worry about

[ In Reply To ..]
My cat, Starr, has done that for years. She's only 5. Before she chewed the strings through on the blinds, she would get one of the strings from the blind in her mouth and walk back and forth in front of the window with it.

Now, she just sort of sits in the hallway, or on the counter, or wherever. When I look at her and talk, then she reverts back to her normal, higher-pitched voice. One night, about 3:30 am, she was doing this yowling thing and she was LOUD. It was waking me up, but not enough to get up and quiet her down. After about 15 minutes I heard a really loud squawk - it seems that Buddy, one of the other cats her age, had enough as well and quieted her down. It was very funny.

My cat yowls too from time to time - sm - XXX

She is about 10-1/2...been a bit more yowly of late, but nothing wrong with her other than being a very fat cat, was just at the vet about 3 weeks ago for her checkup. I disagree with poster who said it is a sign of hearing loss, my cat has no hearing issues from what I observe. She mainly yowls for attention or to tell me that her food bowl is empty. She will come to me and bat me on my thigh when she wants somthing, which can be annoying. Personally I would not worry about it unless it seems like she is in pain or something.

Oh, Lordy, yes! - sm

My boy is almost 18 years old and he's been howling and yowling for about 4 years now. In his case, I'm leaning towards hearing loss. I'll walk right up to him sometimes and he won't even notice me until I speak to him. Even then, sometimes he still won't respond until I speak his name loudly, and then he startles (as yours did) and starts purring and meowing.

I've noticed he'll yowl at the walls, the couch, while he's simply lying down on the floor in the middle of the living room, or when he wakes up from a nap. He almost always yowls and howls when he's hungry and then again right after he eats and right before he goes to potty. I thought maybe he had a bowel or bladder problem or other GI problem, but I've followed him in there and I've seen no obvious problems or changes. He'll also yowl and howl after I've gone to bed. I'll call his name and he'll come in there with me and jump on the bed and then he's fine.

Speaking Of Cats - What Is The Name Of Your Cat/cats?Oct 06, 2010
I find it interesting what people name their pets and how they selected a specific pet  name.  Mine are both pure black and litter mates.  At first we were gravitating towards names that would fit black cats one of which was Amos and Andy just t o name one.  They ended up with the names of JJ and Mojo.  JJ was short for Jimmie Johnson (my husband is a NASCAR fan) and Mojo was named related to blues music, which we attend a blues festival every year in Main ...

Question For People Planning To VoteApr 10, 2012
Just a question as I am interesting in hearing the positives on both sides.  Without saying negatives about the side you don't support.  Can you give me a reason(s) why I should vote for Obama or why I should vote for Romney.  I don't want to hear negativity about the other candidate, already read enough.  And if possible don't try and make up things like Romney will try and convert everyone to Mormon or Obama will save the planet and covert everyone to muslim. ...

Has anyone ever used a sewing awl for heavier fabrics like Carhartt type work pants? How Do You Get Rid Of Cats?Oct 20, 2009
No, I don't mean putting them in a sack with a brick and throwing them in a river... but how do you keep them from hanging around your home? My next door neighbor has started putting food out for strays and now there are 3 half grown kitten-cats that are hanging around not just her apartment, but mine too. Yesterday I sat down my groceries on my front step while I got my key out and they were nosing around my bags. Then when a few minutes later when I went to take out trash, they followed m ...

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Anyone Have Cats?Oct 28, 2010
I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some s ...

My Cats Have NEVER Been Healthier!Jan 21, 2012
Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc.  One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues.  But overall they are healthy cats. A new Pet Club opened next door to the Wal-Mart, and I have been buying dry food there in large (30 lb. or so) bags to save some money.  Plus they have a $5 off coupon on the back of the Fry' ...

Cats And KeyboardsJun 07, 2012
Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways? In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys. Heck, for all ...

Thread below was definitely best ever.  I had forgotten about my drooling baby.  She passed away December 2012 when she was 18 1/2 years old.  After reading the post below,  I remembered the day I woke up when she was 9 years old, she was sleeping on my chest, and there was not a puddle on my chest.  So she learned to swallow when she was 9.  I used to have kleenex boxes all over the house, and when I would pass her off to someone I would hand them a kleenex. How To Shave My CatsOct 14, 2013
Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. Just kidding about this but it is a lot that my hubby tells me to use the commercial vacuum we have to get it up. I did have a company that would shave the cats down about once a year but now they do not have groomers there any longer. Some places will shave but they require for your cats to have shots including rabies and from what I r ...

Do You Think Older Cats Can Get Sundowning?Feb 25, 2012
My ole guy is 17.  He is fine during the day, but when I go to work at night, he cries and cries and seems so needy.  I have 2 desks together, he sits on one at my left arm and keeps grabbing me so I cannot work, until  he finally gets to sleep.  I know cats are nocturnal, but I thought they were supposed to sleep something like 20 hrs a day, especially older ones.  ...

My 2 House Cats Are BoredJan 02, 2012

I Need A Little Advice On Feral CatsSep 23, 2016

They won't let us touch them yet, but they were getting closer to us, within inches, this past week. There are 4. My favorite is the deep dark gray runt. He/she is the only one we haven't been able to get near and is so timid. He/she wouldn't even play with the other kittens that much, just sit and watch. This morning when we went ou ...

I have tried sitting out food late of a night so maybe that will carry them over until I want to get up and it is not 6 in the morning. Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? I am using "guaranteed" sprays to clean and discourage them but it is still happening. They do still use their litter boxes somewhat, but not as much as usual. Thanks ...

For Animal Lovers (especially Cats) Mar 18, 2013
We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Warning! Chinese Jerky Making Dogs/cats SickOct 23, 2013
This is BS! (CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has a message for veterinarians and pet owners: If dogs or cats get sick after eating jerky pet treats, let us know. The agency says it's received reports of more than 3,600 dogs and 10 cats that got sick after eating jerky pet treats since 2007. Of those cases, the FDA says, more than 580 pets have died. "This is one of the most elusive and mysterious outbreaks we've encountered," said Bernadette Dunham, direc ...
