My 2 House Cats are Bored

Posted: Jan 2, 2012

Soon I will be working 3 jobs, and my 2 house kitties are already bored (they can't stand each other so don't play together, etc.).

They already have a TON of toys (both interactive and not) as well as a tall cat tree and multiple scratching posts, but I need something else to help alleviate their boredom.

Artificial aquarium?  Videos of birds, fish, etc.?  Your ideas would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I used to hide treats around the house for my - kitty to "hunt" for. (nm)

Good idea! - FelineOwner

Along that line I bought a plastic ball that "dispenses" treats as the cat rolls it. Unfortunately, my cat never did roll the ball; he just looked at me and cried for treats.

I will give your method a shot. Thanks!

Don't make it too hard at first... maybe let him - see you hide a couple in - (sm)

rather obvious places. Then let him see you hide a couple in not-so-obvious places. Then, once he's "found" those, try hiding a couple without letting him see you do it, in a couple places where you know he's sure to find them. From there, you can expand the difficulty and frequency of the game depending on your cat's interest, "hunting" skill, and appetite for treats. They do things like that with zoo animals, so they can "forage" for food, and it keeps them more active, busy and engaged.
Great tips. Thanks so much! :) NM - FelineOwner

My cat crashed his head against window. - FelineOwner

I used to have a hummingbird feeder outside, but my cat went NUTS trying to get to the bird and banged his noggin HARD against the window, so I took it down. Also I think it would just frustrate them to no end, seeing the birds but not being able to get at them.

Thanks for the input.

My bird feeder is further from the window, on a tree - down the hill a ways. (sm)

That way they can see the movement, but not scare the birds. I have a little bird bath outside my front window, and the birds and the cats both love it. I have a dresser in front of the bedroom window where the cats can sit and watch the bird bath activity, but there are plants and other "cover" the cats can hide behind, so they don't scare off the feathered bathers.

The front door is made of small panes of glass, and at night I leave the blinds on the door up a bit, so they can see out the bottom panes and down the front steps. I have motion lights outside, and if another cat, or a dog, or a raccoon or fox walks by, they're alerted by motion light, and run to see what's outside.

I the summer the hummingbird feeder is hung by the front door, so they can see the birds, but are not near a window. I also try to plant flowers that attract butterflies, which they LOVE to watch fluttering about.

Of all of this, I like the bird bath the best. I hope to add one or two more... the birds seem so appreciative of them, not to mention the kitties.
Thanks! Unfortunately, - FelineOwner

Unfortunately, I am a renter in an apartment so have limited options as far as trees and other yard objects go.

I have to say that your description of your yard sounds lovely, pictureseque... almost idyllic!

Thanks so much for your input. :)

How the heck do you know your cats are bored - did they tell you

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, but I have cats and I have no idea if they are bored or not.

If your toys dont "alleviate their boredom," maybe they are not bored at all.

You should read more. - FelineOwner

That was an incredibly sarcastic -- and ill-informed -- comment you made.

One of mine is part Siamese and incredibly hyper. When he becomes bored he starts to chew on electrical cords, bullies my other cat, and makes a bizarre yowling noise. Dogs too can become destructive when left alone inside all day by their owners because they are BORED. ANY veternarian -- and many pet owners -- is familiar with this phenomenon.

Some of us *KNOW* our pets -- I have had these cats for 12 years -- and know how to read cats in general. There are books on this topic; perhaps you should pick one up and read it. You may learn some things.

She asked a good question, and you gave a good answer! - ...

I, too, was interested in how you knew your cats were bored. Like, literally - not sarcastic or anything!

It's possible the other poster was asking an honest question. I think you gave a good, descriptive answer.

I have cats too, and I am always interested in learning about other peoples' experiences of their cats!

Here's something I find my cats enjoy: I have some large-ish throw pillows, and I use them to build little viaducts and passages and tunnels on the bed. I just lean a couple of them together, and blammo - it's a little kitty adventure!
That sounds purrrfect! - FelineOwner

Hey, that's a good one! A homemade kitty tunnel... I'll have to try that one.

Thanks! :)

not intended to be sarcastic - oh holy one

I said I have cats, and I do have a siamese and I have never seen him chew on cords or bully my other nonsiamese cat. He also does not howl, so maybe your books dont cover all cats.

I was serious in what I said that maybe her cats weren't bored at all, maybe they felt like being lazy that day.

I guess your know-it-all attitude had to jump in and dominate the conversation huh?
Boy, you people can start a cat fight - over any little thing

Pun intended.
"Did they tell you?" was SARCASTIC. - FelineOwner
[ In Reply To ..]
Your attempt to rewrite history is incredibly lame and fools no one. "Did they tell you?" was a dead giveaway, so don't try to pretend now that you were being serious. The subsequent, "Sorry, but" is also an indicator of your culpability.

You also seem to have difficulty following who is posting on here. I am the OP, and the moniker hasn't changed.

You wrote, "I said I have cats, and I do have a siamese and I have never seen him chew on cords or bully my other nonsiamese cat. He also does not howl, so maybe your books dont cover all cats."

Lessee, do you suppose that books written by animal behaviorists are going to cover the NONEXISTENT behaviors or the EXISTENT ones? Don't hurt yourself trying to think on that one too hard.

Also, you DO NOT know which books I have or what is contained within them, so HOW DO YOU know whether those particular behaviors are addressed in my books or not?

I was right: You do need to read more. Starting with a good Logic 101 book.

I have an idea... - buy a new couch!

[ In Reply To ..]
Seriously. We just bought a little loveseat for our tiny apartment. We have done without one for 12 years. The cats love it. :)

There's nothing like a cardboard box for hours - upon hours of kitty-fun!

[ In Reply To ..]
Or a paper bag they can hide in. If I put a new, strangely-shaped object on the ground - it can be anything - a lipstick, a key, etc., they'll bat that around for a while.

My older cat gets turned on by a spiral binder pulled out of an old calendar I was recycling. Makes her go nuts batting it.

Moving small furniture around and putting it in different places makes them interested in the change. They like to sit on (and in) things, so just putting 2 cardboard boxes on the living room floor for them to perch on or hide in makes their day. When they get tired of them, then the boxes get recycled. But when a new box comes in the future, oh boy! MORE kitty fun!

Speaking Of Cats - What Is The Name Of Your Cat/cats?Oct 06, 2010
I find it interesting what people name their pets and how they selected a specific pet  name.  Mine are both pure black and litter mates.  At first we were gravitating towards names that would fit black cats one of which was Amos and Andy just t o name one.  They ended up with the names of JJ and Mojo.  JJ was short for Jimmie Johnson (my husband is a NASCAR fan) and Mojo was named related to blues music, which we attend a blues festival every year in Main ...

my real life issues have turned into a huge joke...  remember Escape from New York (with the ruggedly handsome Kurt Russell at the time) - why not let the people who want no laws, no government intervention, no social programs live on the island of Manhattan - where they can do whatever they want to each other.  Or flip it - but whatever, this is getting so depressing.  a house divided, well, you know the rest ...

So Bored With Cooking The Same Things Over And OverDec 18, 2010
Sad to say that I end up cooking the same five or six things every week. I think my taste buds have atrophied. Anyone have any ideas for something really good (also fairly fast and easy to make)? My husband doesn't like things that are too spicy (100% Norwegian--family story was that his mother still had the same spices she got for her wedding 50 years on the spice rack ) but I'm looking for a change. ...

Anybody Bored With Poll Data? Trump And ClintonMay 23, 2016
Seriously how did we get to the point that these annoying individuals are our ony choices unless Bernie burns Hillary.  It would be wise for the Democratic party to back Bernie since people do not like Hillary and feel she is not trustworthy.  Not sure what to do about Trump other than Republicans cannot replace him with a career politician.  Trump got where he is because voters are tired of corruption of government with bribed politicians selling their votes to the highest speci ...

How Do You Get Rid Of Cats?Oct 20, 2009
No, I don't mean putting them in a sack with a brick and throwing them in a river... but how do you keep them from hanging around your home? My next door neighbor has started putting food out for strays and now there are 3 half grown kitten-cats that are hanging around not just her apartment, but mine too. Yesterday I sat down my groceries on my front step while I got my key out and they were nosing around my bags. Then when a few minutes later when I went to take out trash, they followed m ...

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Anyone Have Cats?Oct 28, 2010
I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some s ...

My Cats Have NEVER Been Healthier!Jan 21, 2012
Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc.  One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues.  But overall they are healthy cats. A new Pet Club opened next door to the Wal-Mart, and I have been buying dry food there in large (30 lb. or so) bags to save some money.  Plus they have a $5 off coupon on the back of the Fry' ...

Cats And KeyboardsJun 07, 2012
Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways? In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys. How To Shave My CatsOct 14, 2013
Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? I am using "guaranteed" sprays to clean and discourage them but it is still happening. They do still use their litter boxes somewhat, but not as much as usual. Thanks ...

For Animal Lovers (especially Cats) Mar 18, 2013
We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Question For People With Old Cats.........Jul 19, 2013
Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason?  My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason.  She has all sorts of different normal vocalizations, yet when she yowls she sounds distressed.  But when I go to investigate, I'll find that she's:  Talking to her water dish as she dips her paws into it.
