Anyone have cats?

I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some scratches on her hind legs and her left eye is swollen. I called the nearest vet and they actually told me instead of coming in to put eyedrops in her eye and watch it for two or three days. Does that make sense? I can tell she's either hurting a little or just scared. I think it's more like around her eye, probably got slapped by the stray and there may be a small cut I can't find. I'm seriously worried but this vet has rave reviews on the internet and my regular vet is almost two hours away and hard to get into it anyway. Any suggestions? The rest of the vets had some bad reviews and I try to avoid them. I know animals have a way of healing themself so I'm probably just being a baby......again.

I'm a cat person. Have had cats all my life and love them dearly. If it were my cat, I'd be worried, especially the eye. Cats do have a way of healing themselves, as do many animals, but I'm a worrier also and would take her to the vet, if it were me. Call this vet wtih the good reviews, tell them it is an emergency and see how long it takes to get you in. It certainly can't hurt anything and if nothing else would probably make you feel better. I also would look into one of the pet doors with a magnet on it and a cat collar that has one also that would open and close the pet door (they have them at PetSmart and Petco), so that strays can't get in, but yours could get in and out when necessary.

Take her to another vet! Cat scratches and bites can become infected easily, and stray cats generally carry diseases (feline AIDS!). Make sure your cat is properly vaccinated. Since you let her outdoors, perhaps you can get one of those collars and doors that let only the collared animal in. Don't leave food outside, the strays will keep coming around.

only time will cure the fear. The cat will come out again when she feels comfortable and there is no longer a threat. Perhaps the scent of the stray is lingering??

Since there are no other vets that you feel comfortable going to in your area and your regular one is 2 hours away, I would call back the first one (with the good reviews) and insist on making an appt. When you see this vet, make sure he gives your cat a good once-over for any unseen scratches. You don't want any infection setting in that could lead to abscesses. I'm a little shocked that whoever talked to you on the phone didn't make an appt for you. Sounds like a receptionist or other worker dispensing info without a vet's or vet tech's license, doing you and your cat no favor. It's probably simple and can be addressed easily, but having the vet take a look is going to do a lot for your peace of mind.
Congratulations on becoming a cat lover convert. They're super pets. Interesting about the cat door. I should get one like that. A few years back I had a possum follow my cat in the door and I found him or her eating the cat food.

I hope your cat is up to date on her rabies shot. I don't know where you're from, but where I live, if you bring in an unvaccinated animal with wounds from another animal, your only choices are to pay for the animal to be boarded for something like 3 months for observation or allow them to put it to sleep. They WILL NOT allow you to leave with the animal. (Strangely enough, the next county over from us will let you keep them inside under observation yourself, but not here.)

To be honest, that's the first thing I thought of when you related what the vet told you. They may be telling you this for your own sake so the cat doesn't end up being put to sleep.

Probably use your judgment, but if you want to keep this cat long, please keep her inside. I had 2 of mine die, one from something killing him, the other from a UTI. I know it is hard to keep them inside when they want to go out, but letting them run wild really shortens their lifespan.

PS: For me it felt a lot worse having my cats die then when I've had dogs die.

The back yard is fenced with a very high wooden fence so one would think it'd be somewhat safe. Just got back from the vet, went to a bad one but had to go to someone. It's not her eye exactly, it's the very tip next to her eye and there's a scratch. He put some medicine on it and taped up her hind leg and she's on antibiotics and pain pills. She's already acting like she feels better. I stopped and got a cage and am going to try to trap the stray cat and find it a home elsewhere. BTW, the food is inside the house, the stray comes in and gets it. I'd never leave food outside unless it's down the street to lure the cat down there......now there's an idea. lol

I'm a fanatic about that when it comes to her and my dogs. I'm in Texas and they'll keep them up to 72 hours if they bite someone but they won't keep them for just not having shots. They give you a day or two to get them and then show proof, unless it bites someone of course, then it's the 3 day deal while they do blood tests that you pay for.

What kind of eyedrops were suggested? I'd be concerned about the eye and the swelling, especially if the other cat was a feral. It could be carrying all sorts of viruses/infections and may have transmitted something to your cat. A swollen eye can be the result of an injury or a viral or bacterial infection, so I have no idea why any reputable vet would not immediately want to see the cat. The cornea could've even been scratched, or other things that would require prompt treatment.

If it was my cat I would take her to the nearest vet ASAP.

I agree with all of the above and the visit to the vet since the health status of the stray is unknown. I'd also consider calling the local humane society to have it picked up. I inherited a cat too, she belong to a neighbor who passed away and chose me for her new human. I don't have a dog door but she stands by the door and meows when she wants to go outside (except in the winter). Hope your cat is okay, good luck.

He gave me something they had there and it's in a clear bottle. It's sorta thick. He did tell me the name but for the life of me I can't remember them. They must be helping because she's not got her eye closed like it was and she's not whimpering. I heard pouring bleach around the area will keep strays out so I've got bleach all around the fence and actually got one the magnetic doggie doors from Lowe's and it'll be installed tomorrow. I think I'm set now and all will be safe.

If you have a feed store in your area, those usually carry antibiotic ointment you can use on kitty's eyes. You can buy antibiotic drops/pills there, too, as well as any number of veterinary supplies. Even if the vet doesn't think this is serious enough to merit a trip into his office, it's well worth a trip to your local feed store for the antibiotic ointment. Just tell the person behind the counter what you need it for and they'll be more than helpful in choosing the right one and explaining how to use it.

BTW, my hubby's cat slips out and comes home with the occasional skeevy eye but so far it clears up after he's had a nap and apparently the tear ducts clean it out. Hope it goes that smoothly for your baby, too!

Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc. One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues. Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. We've been taking care of a feral cat for 2 years. She finally trusts us enough that we can pet her. She surprised us with 4 kittens 9 weeks ago. Besides taking the vacuum cleaner and sucking these brats up in the cleaner, how can I do this. Every morning bright and early, around 6 or so, they stand outside my bedroom door and meow for their breakfast. We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them. I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute. I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun. By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason? My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason. We live in a neighborhood and a lot of cats come and go through our yard. For the past 4 years or so a neighbors cat has been a constant visitor. During the cold winter nights she would come over and sleep in the boxes with blankets and an outdoor pet heating pad. She also would eat here too when she was not at her own place.
