My cats are taking advantage of me, help

Posted: Oct 26, 2009

Besides taking the vacuum cleaner and sucking these brats up in the cleaner, how can I do this. Every morning bright and early, around 6 or so, they stand outside my bedroom door and meow for their breakfast. I have tried sitting out food late of a night so maybe that will carry them over until I want to get up and it is not 6 in the morning. I do not start my work day until noon so I try to sleep until 8 or so because I watch TV so late of a night. The nights my husband is home there is no problem with the kitties. I think they have lost respect for me but how to regain. I sure could use those extra 2 hours beauty sleep.

I keep a big bowl of dry food filled full at all times. My cat can help herself when she is hungry. She is not fat from overfeeding. Saves me a lot of wear and tear. I give her extra tidbits at other times. If you try this and your kitties still meow outside your door, they are wanting love, not food. My cat follows me around all morning when I first get up. Hope this helps!

Sounds like you let them control the situation. Cats can be taught, it just takes a little more patience than say, a dog. If you ignore that behavior long enough, and don't reward the early morning meowing, they will stop. Also try using a water pistol. It's harmless and lets them know when they are behaving in a way that is unacceptable. Very quickly all you'll need to do is show them the pistol and they'll get it. (tried this myself for my midnight meower, he's very well behaved and now listens to simple verbal commands; "NO, STOP, GET DOWN".) good luck and remember, be patient.

I also have dried food out all the time and when I get up and feed those meow kids they are gulping it down like they never have seen food. They are petted, held and told every day how loved they are- so much that when I say, hey sweetie, how is my baby - my hubby says oh I am fine. Say not talking to you, talking to the cats and he said must have known.

LOL! Don't they all?? - lrlady

I think that is just a cat's nature to take advantage of us humans! When my daughter left for college her 2 cats bothered the heck out of me, kneading dough on my head at 5 a.m., licking me constantly while I was trying to sleep. Just giving them some attention and losing a little sleep for the first couple of weeks until they got to used her not being there really helped. That's not to say I wasn't annoyed at times. It does sound like they just want more love but, of course, on THEIR time schedule NOT yours! LOL

Kitties hungry? - A Kat Lady

If it is not a behavior issue and they are in good health, another possibility is that their food is not satisfying to them. Cats are obligate carnivores. If their food is mostly grains and glutens, they may still be hungry. Maybe a different kibble? I switched all my cats to canned food without by-products or fillers and grain-free kibble after the horrible pet food recalls in 2007. They are fed twice a day plus late night snack and are no longer hungry all the time.

Mine know that breakfast isn't until about 9:30, but - when they do pull that stunt, (sm)

I yell at them or throw something at them that'll make a lot of noise. That usually takes care of it.

OR: You could get one of those wonderful little ultrasonic cat-repellants. I posted earlier about something called "Cat-Scram". Runs on a 9-volt battery, or you can get a wire to plug it into a socket. You could just set it outside your door at night when you go to bed, and if the cats come withint about 12-15 feet of it, it'll emit an annoying, high-pitched sound that cats HATE, but humans can't hear. So even if they do meow, they'd probably have to stay far enough from your door that you wouldn't hear it.

Speaking Of Cats - What Is The Name Of Your Cat/cats?Oct 06, 2010
I find it interesting what people name their pets and how they selected a specific pet  name.  Mine are both pure black and litter mates.  At first we were gravitating towards names that would fit black cats one of which was Amos and Andy just t o name one.  They ended up with the names of JJ and Mojo.  JJ was short for Jimmie Johnson (my husband is a NASCAR fan) and Mojo was named related to blues music, which we attend a blues festival every year in Main ...

Republicans Fear Sequester Gives President Obama Advantage.Mar 04, 2013
By: Jake Sherman and Jonathan AllenFebruary 27, 2013 11:31 PM EST It’s not only the size of the sequester that has House Republicans fretting. It’s not like the GOP expects the stock market to plummet or furloughs across the federal government to drive up unemployment. House Republicans fear the massive spending cuts set to take effect Friday will result in Congress continuing to cede its constitutional power of the purse. Republicans are fretting that the $85 ...

How Do You Get Rid Of Cats?Oct 20, 2009
No, I don't mean putting them in a sack with a brick and throwing them in a river... but how do you keep them from hanging around your home? My next door neighbor has started putting food out for strays and now there are 3 half grown kitten-cats that are hanging around not just her apartment, but mine too. Yesterday I sat down my groceries on my front step while I got my key out and they were nosing around my bags. Then when a few minutes later when I went to take out trash, they followed m ...

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Anyone Have Cats?Oct 28, 2010
I never liked them but got this one when my mother died and I love this cat now. She goes out the doggie door and pretty much acts like one of the dogs. There's a stray cat that keeps coming over the fence and I finally figured out it was coming in during the night and eating all the treats and food left in the kitchen for my cat. Last night I heard mind screaming, got downstairs and the stray cat had attacked her. Mine hid for a long time and finally came out of hiding. She has some s ...

My Cats Have NEVER Been Healthier!Jan 21, 2012
Over the years my cats have been on different dry and canned foods: Science Diet, expensive stuff from the vet that I can't recall the name of right now, etc.  One of my babies has some allergies, resulting in sneezing and some colon issues.  But overall they are healthy cats. A new Pet Club opened next door to the Wal-Mart, and I have been buying dry food there in large (30 lb. or so) bags to save some money.  Plus they have a $5 off coupon on the back of the Fry' ...

Cats And KeyboardsJun 07, 2012
Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways? In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys. Heck, for all ...

My Dog Hates Cats, Help!Jul 19, 2013
Any pet lover got some advice for me?  I got a boxer pup when she was 10 weeks old and we have cats.  She never really paid much attention to the cats.  Well, now all of a sudden at 7 months old, she seriously tries to KILL the cats!  She attacks them and will not stop, I have to restrain her and hold her and she STILL tries to get to them.  I love her and don't want to have to get rid of her, but the cats are my kids' cats and they love their cats as well. &nb ...

Slobbering CatsAug 20, 2013
Thread below was definitely best ever.  I had forgotten about my drooling baby.  She passed away December 2012 when she was 18 1/2 years old.  After reading the post below,  I remembered the day I woke up when she was 9 years old, she was sleeping on my chest, and there was not a puddle on my chest.  So she learned to swallow when she was 9.  I used to have kleenex boxes all over the house, and when I would pass her off to someone I would hand them a kleenex. Also u ...

How To Shave My CatsOct 14, 2013
Ok, maybe not shaving my cat but here is the rundown. I have 4 cats, 2 with extremely long furry coats and they shed so much that I am almost drowning in fur. Just kidding about this but it is a lot that my hubby tells me to use the commercial vacuum we have to get it up. I did have a company that would shave the cats down about once a year but now they do not have groomers there any longer. Some places will shave but they require for your cats to have shots including rabies and from what I r ...

Do You Think Older Cats Can Get Sundowning?Feb 25, 2012

I Need A Little Advice On Feral CatsSep 23, 2016
We've been taking care of a feral cat for 2 years. She finally trusts us enough that we can pet her. She surprised us with 4 kittens 9 weeks ago. They won't let us touch them yet, but they were getting closer to us, within inches, this past week. There are 4. My favorite is the deep dark gray runt. He/she is the only one we haven't been able to get near and is so timid. He/she wouldn't even play with the other kittens that much, just sit and watch. This morning when we went ou ...

Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. This is not a bladder infection problem, just an attitude problem from what I am reading. Has anyone had any luck in reversing this type of behavior? I am using "guaranteed" sprays to clean and discourage them but it is still happening. They do still use their litter boxes somewhat, but not as much as usual. Thanks ...

For Animal Lovers (especially Cats) Mar 18, 2013
We have stray cats that come around our neighborhood and we've been feeding them.  I know, I know, a mistake, but they were little kittens at the time mostly and so cute.  Now that mating season is upon us, I think there are about 2 or 3 pregnant ones.  I know I shouldn't have started this, but how do I stop?  I don't know if any of the other neighbors feed them or not, and it will make me sick if I see them starving.  What to do?  Sometimes there are ...

Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...

Question For People With Old Cats.........Jul 19, 2013
Do you have an elderly kitty that tends to yowl a lot for no reason?  My 14-year-old cat is happy, healthy, (been to vet not too long ago, also had a dental), and yet she some times yowls for what appears to be no reason.  She has all sorts of different normal vocalizations, yet when she yowls she sounds distressed.  But when I go to investigate, I'll find that she's:  Talking to her water dish as she dips her paws into it. Talking to her blanket as she kneads it ...

Moving 2000 Miles With 2 CatsAug 06, 2013

Sad Week - One Of Our Friendly Neighborhood Cats Is GoneAug 26, 2015
We live in a neighborhood and a lot of cats come and go through our yard.  For the past 4 years or so a neighbors cat has been a constant visitor.  During the cold winter nights she would come over and sleep in the boxes with blankets and an outdoor pet heating pad.  She also would eat here too when she was not at her own place.  Actually all of our neighbors take care of all of the cats so that none ever go hungry or don't have a place to get out of the cold.  So f ...
