sundowning?

Posted: Nov 18, 2013

I have noticed the past few months that if I am out driving after dark I have a tendency to become disoriented and it takes me awhile to figure out where I am even though I am on streets I have been driving and familiar with for years.  Does anyone have any experience with this to know whether it could be sundowning?  I'm 57 and as far as I know the only family history I have is a great-grandfather who died of "senile dementia" at age 82 I think he was.  Is this something that any of you have experienced or should I get concerned. Also, I obviously am under a lot of stress as I also went from 1 FT good paying job and 1 PT bad-paying job to 1 FT bad-paying job.

Stress can cause all kind of interesting reactions. I think sundowning pertains more to getting extremely agitated when it gets dark out (enter my MIL), but you could ask a professional.

You are quite young to have dementia, and you don't mention any other symptoms, but I would mention the issue at your next doc appt.

Sundowning - MT

Sundowning is a term applied to someone who exhibits drastic changes in mood and behavior at night. This is a form of dementia, but what you are experiencing is not typical of sundowning. Your disorientation could be due to a number of factors, but if this is recurring a lot, then I definitely would consult your doctor and discuss this with them. It could also be due to stress. I did the very same thing once when taking my grandson home, and went down the wrong street, and I knew the area very well. I was under significant stress at the time. I would not worry about dementia, but I think it is a stress situation. Hope this helps.

I Wish - People would come back

...happens all the time. Someone comes on, wants some advice, then disappears. This OPs note was written almost a month ago (as of my posting) and never came back to say how she was doing or to acknowledge our responses.

Agree, it would be nice if they just acknowledged - the effort. nm

I'm not sure why they don't come back to acknowledge, but I got frustrated giving suggestions and what has helped me in a given situation, only to have the person never come back to acknowledge.

It's not so much the "thank you" that I need, it's we don't even know if the person read the post we may have spent so much time on.

Do You Think Older Cats Can Get Sundowning?Feb 25, 2012
My ole guy is 17.  He is fine during the day, but when I go to work at night, he cries and cries and seems so needy.  I have 2 desks together, he sits on one at my left arm and keeps grabbing me so I cannot work, until  he finally gets to sleep.  I know cats are nocturnal, but I thought they were supposed to sleep something like 20 hrs a day, especially older ones.  ...
