Cats and Keyboards

Posted: Jun 7, 2012

Has anyone else noticed that ever since they invented "Windows" keyboards, your cat can screw up your computer in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways?

In the old days, the worst thing that Rocky Rhodes could do by strolling across my keyboard was to reboot my computer, and that took some doing (stepping on control, alt, delete at the same time).  Now, Rocky can make my screen disappear, mute my headphone, etc. because Windows keyboards have all these extra function keys.

Heck, for all I know he could open an E-Trade account and then make a bunch of stupid stock decisions, driving me to the brink of bankruptcy.

[ In Reply To ..]
To assume that one's house smells bad because they have a lot of animals is insulting and ignorant and flat out rude. Troll.

People who have pets whose houses also smell bad are simply lazy housekeepers.

Poster never said those 18 cats were indoor cats and while that's a heck of a lot of work (I have 8 - all indoor) it can be done with daily cleaning of litter boxes and sweeping.

And no, with 8 indoor cats, my house DOES NOT smell bad. Thankyouverymuch.

No Offense, But - Here's an Analogy

People who smoke or live with smokers, don't smell the smoke. People who don't smoke or live with smokers, smell it. How's that?

[ In Reply To ..]
comparing cats to smokers is just two different entities! I know if my home smells from cats and quickly take steps to eliminate the odors. When I have visitors, they are always surprised to see my cats walking around (2)and always state they never would have guessed I had any at all. Smokers, on the other hand, with their stinking habit, can never truly get rid of the odor. It permeates everything...including the paint on the walls. One cannot really compare one to the other at all.
Understood, but...Read Msg - Ex-Smoker, Ex-Cat Owner

I think the anaology is not off-base. Of course smoke permeates into fibers and such, but as cute as cats are, if you have 18 in the house, yes, your house smells of cat urine. I don't care how many litter boxes you have and how pretty the litter smells. Your house smells of perfumed cat urine.

Geez, nobody is cutting down cats. Just realize that there is no way on this earth that someone can have 18 cats in a house and there's no urine odor.
no......you are not cutting down cats..... - anon

you are cutting down a PERSON who has 18 cats and just "ASSUMING" that her house stinks because of it. You are wrong on both counts. but whatever....you are always right, obviously...know it all.
Not Cutting Anyone Down - sm

My MIL had 4-5 cats at all times; if 1 died, it got replaced. She was one of the most meticulous, fuss-budget clean-it-up people I know. She was constantly at the litter pans (I think she had 2), scooping them out, etc., but when I went over there, I could smell it. That's all anyone is saying here.

I'm sorry you cat people are so sensitive. I haven't heard ANYONE cut anyone down here. Just giving some facts. Doesn't mean anyone is a cat-hater, person-hater, etc.
need more litter boxes - luv my cat
[ In Reply To ..]
As a cat owner myself, only one now but had two, you should have at least one litter box per cat and then even one extra if you have so many cats. I think it all depends where the litter boxes are kept, but if you don't have enough litter boxes, your house is going to smell and if the litter boxes are close to the living area with a lot of cats, I think it would be difficult to control the smell. My litter box is kept in the basement, so we have no smell in our living area. If these 18 cats are all indoor, I'm sorry but I think her house might smell unless the litter boxes are kept far away from the living area. And I think she would have to be CONSTANTLY cleaning the boxes.
I use 2 litter boxes per cat. I have 2 cats, and - 4 litter boxes. No smell. sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Usually the rule of thumb is 1 litter box per cat, +1. 1 cat = 2 boxes. 2 cats = 3 boxes, and so on.

I use 2 per cat because one of my cats absolutely will NOT use litter of any kind. She'll only go on smooth, clean surfaces, so she has 2 empty litter boxes with nothing in them (which of course have to be washed every time she uses them). The other cat uses litter.

Of course, if someone has multiple adult cats that are unrelated and/or one or more of them is unaltered, you can get a "cat smell" from spraying. (Marking territory). The more cats you have, the more likely this can occur. But I still think it's possible to have 18 cats without having a smelly house. If you have a male and a female, unfixed, you can easily end up with 18 cats within a year. If that happens, and they all know each other, they probably won't spray. The person with 18 cats may have a huge house, too. Or, some may be indoor cats, and some outdoor. Or they take turns going in and out.
It has to have some sort of smell. I have a dog - bmt
[ In Reply To ..]
and I can sometimes smell dog smell and if I can smell it, I start cleaning, burning, and doing whatever I can to fix it. I know we get used to the smell when we live in it because my husband used to be a smoker and quit over 2 years ago and now if I smell smoke, it is quite noticeable. You can never get rid of all the smell but you do your best to make it tolerable when you are an animal person.
Realizing that, I periodically have visitors, repairmen - etc. do an odor-check. So far, so good.

clean, but sometimes one of them misses the box. I clean the area constantly, but like another poster said, I live with these cats 24/7, so just to make sure, I sometimes have a friend or relative give it the sniff test.

And yes, they ARE honest, most of the time. Once when my sister was visiting, she said, "No, your litter box area doesn't smell at all, but your garbage can is getting kind of ripe!"

18 cats is a little nuts - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
18 of any pet is a little nuts as far as I am concerned, but as long as you can properly feed them, get them to vet, etc., to each his own. As far as the smell is concerned, it has to smell on some level, but I am not one to talk because I have 2 huge dogs who shed constantly. When we go on vacation for a couple days and come home, I can smell the dog smell, but when I'm here, I don't smell a thing. Good luck with all your cats :)

Having read this thread, I wanted to chime in with some support. If I could have 25 cats, I would. For all I know, you have a lovely backyard and an extra room or two. I don't agree with so many posters here that seem to feel it is a foregone conclusion that your house will smell if you have cats.

Enjoy your feline friends! Nothing wrong with loving animals. I bet your blood pressure is lower than that of all the snarky respondents here!

You are one of the most kind and caring person to take care of those pets. People see a number and they will say rude and hurtful things. My dad had 24 cats at one time. His house didn't stink either. Nobody knows what anyone's situation is. I love cats so much would have more if I could. We are looking for a place of our own and then we will take in more cats. There is nothing as heartbreaking as to see an animal sitting in a cage waiting to be adopted. Makes me cry thinking about it.

Love you for caring for God's innocent creatures. Bless your heart.

to work. I couldn't figure it out. I unhooked and rehooked all the cables. I checked everything I could. I almost called my ex to ask him to help me. I didn't want to buy a new computer. This must have taken 45 minutes.

I finally looked at my power supply. My fat cat (I have 2--one thin and one not) had been sitting on my power supply and shut everything off. My thin, fortunately or not, only sleeps on the modem.

I once had 11 indoor cats...in Ames, IA, where the vet school was. They were offering $10 per cat to use for experiments and people were stealing cats everywhere to turn in to them. We kept as may stays as we could find until they shut the study down. Then we adopted them out to family members.

I now have two very very old cats. I spent 9K to replace all my carpet with tile, and they do whatever they need to whereever they manage. If other people don't like it, too bad. Cats are better company than people.

Why Do My Cats Do This? Dec 01, 2009
Usually my 3 cats come running when I give them treats. This morning 2 showed up, where is the other one? I have looked all through the house. Where in the world do kitties go when they just want to be alone, a kittie retreat? If they do not want to be found, usually that is what happens. I have looked in every nook and cranny, behind TVs, behind furniture. I know that kitty was just here this morning. He sits outside my bedroom door each morning until I appear. Now poof! ...

Cats Spraying - New CarpetJun 03, 2010
We recently had new carpeting put in. We have 6 inside cats, none ever sprayed in the house until now, and now they all are. They just back up to a wall and/or a cabinet and let go. Shaving Dogs And CatsApr 28, 2013
I am an animal lover and am all for making them comfortable in the summer months, but please keep in mind that an animal's coat/fur PROTECTS them from the heat/sun.  By shaving them to the skin, you are just setting them up to get even hotter outdoors and possibly burn their skin. Their coat also protects their internal body from shifts of temperature indoors or out. A pet groomer is NOT going to tell you this--they make a good chunk of money shaving hair off pets.  If you don&# ...
