PRAYER FOR MY MARRIAGE

Please pray for my marriage. I have been married to my husband for 22 years and have had our up and down. I was there for him when he lost his job and had to step up to provide for my family and put him through school. After he graduated from school 5 years ago, he became a different person. He became verbally and physically abusive. Am at a point, I just want to leave but my faith and belief in my vows makes me stay. Please pray for me… to give me courage and strength. Also pray for my husband that God may touch him…

Hi there. First off, let me just say I have walked a mile in your shoes. I'll spare you the pain of hearing my whole story, but my husband was verbally abusive and an alcoholic to boot. Only raised his hand to me once, but I blocked him before there was contact! Anyway, I lived with it for 10 years, reaching out to our church, Pastors, whoever I could get to pray with me. It wasn't until I finally built up the courage to tell my husband either HE STOPS, or I LEAVE. And I meant it. Don't say it until you mean it. He decided the next day to stop drinking, and all the rest just fell into place. He's been dry for 1.5 years now, and life is getting better. I've still got 10 years of baggage that I'm trying to get rid of, but it'll happen!

I was struck, though, by your comment about your faith and your vows. I, too, am a woman of faith. And I had to dig hard into God's word, to find the strength to say ENOUGH. God does not allow for a husband to treat his wife like that. Matter of fact, God tells him "Husbands, love your wives." He is breaking God's commandment. If he "loved" you, you would not be where you are at. If your husband is a man of faith, I encourage you... no I IMPLORE YOU, go to your Pastor. Go by yourself, and talk it over, lay it all on the line. Don't hide in shame. Verbal abuse is just as horrible as physical abuse, and physical abuse is against the law. Get OUT. I didn't say divorce, but you HAVE to protect yourself from him. Do whatEVER you have to do. Protect YOURSELF first, and let God protect and help your husband. He will. God is awesome, and He will work wonders in your husband... but sometimes a person has to be "broken" to be "fixed" - - I'm crying right now because I fear for you, because you remind me of how I was for the last 10 years. Please, don't wait as long as I did. Put your foot down. Put 1 foot in front of the other, and get OUT. I'd be more than happy to give you any other advice or encouragement, go ahead and reply by email if you'd like. I'll answer it! Please, do something, do not wait for the next hit/punch/slap... as it can get out of control in a split second.

Okay, I'll stop the rant now.

I read your post and it struck me and I just wanted to tell you that I will pray for you and please pray for me also as I am in the same boat as you. I have been married for 22 years as well and have a husband who is mentally abusive as well. My husband became a different person after our first child was born. He has lost his job 8 times in the past two years since he became a nurse. I am getting started with a support group online and if you want to join please let me know. I will send you the link. I am just hanging in there - am thinking of leaving but I do not know what God wants.

I'm just curious how the president and the attorney general can decide which laws to defend and which ones not to. I got married in October and am just now getting around to doing all the legalities for the formal name change (just a bit late, lol!). Now that I have the certificate in my hot little hands, is the best place to start everything at the DMV with my driver's license, then to the bank, the Social Security office, etc? Is there any particular order I need to do this in? I know I need to FAX the certificate to my employer so they can legally change the name on payroll, email, etc., ...
