Pew study: Growing support of same-sex marriage

Posted: Mar 21, 2013

This study was released yesterday and oh yes, there are graphs.  Cool

Of the reasons why people have changed their minds, they were as follows:

32% said they knew someone who was homosexual.

25% said they got older and more open-minded/grew up/had more time to think about it.

18% said it's inevitable/the world is changing.

18% said everyone is free to choose love & happiness/government should stay out of it.

8% said because they believe in equal rights.

5% said because of moral or religious beliefs.

Why People Have Changed Their Minds
Asked of supporters who have changed their minds
“What made you change your mind about same-sex marriage?”
What People Said
“My best friend from
high school is a gay
man and he deserves
the same rights; they
are in a committed
relationship.”
”Old fashioned
ignorance, I grew up
a little bit.”
“More people are
happier if that’s how
they want to live.”
“Just the change in
society, it's time.”
“There is one judge
and I am not that one
judge.”

Hmm. That 25% who feel they just got wiser with age - is interesting. nm

Well, we think of the young being so accepting, but here - are a lot of their elders changing. That

many people have been changing from being anti- gay rights to for equal opportunities, most of them quietly, in adulthood just struck me as a lot.

Here where I live, those who bring this topic up are mostly on the against side. So, among the most who stay quiet are presumably a fair number who just choose not to disagree publicly with their friends of many years but do expect to make very different statements in the voting booth.

I like it. I'd like it better if they'd gently make their positions known, but this is the South, where a rural, small town, have-to-get-along-with-my-neighbors-for-life set of manners still prevails, so I don't expect it.

I recently realized that sitting quietly on my beliefs for the sake of getting along really served nothing, and if I wasn't courageous enough to at least state my beliefs, then what good were they? I was surprised at the lack of argument, and not surprised at the same time (that "don't make waves" mentality apparently works both ways).

Of course, I'm sure they're judging me silently - liberal, childfree atheists aren't exactly the norm around here :)

I used to be far more muted about what I believe. I didn't want people to only see a label. After so many years of people labeling me anyway, I don't hold back so much. And if someone asks or seems to be probing for info, they get the truth. I also feared I'd make people uncomfortable by being more outspoken about my beliefs. But if people get uncomfortable because they know I'm not part of their specific religion, that's their problem. If knowing many of my friends are religious doesn't bother me, why should it bother other people?

I think the childfree atheist lifestyle is going to catch on. Children and church take too much time, effort and money;)
[Your last line] now there's a gospel for you :D - grits

Another point I meant to make earlier: What if being open about my beliefs makes it easier for someone else to be open about it too? And what if someone who's struggling in this frankly repressive area could take courage from something I say or do? That last thought is what kicked me over the edge. I'm not "out" as an atheist because it would kill my mama, but on everything else, my freak flag flies. ;)
I'm sure you're right but I can't do it - NK

I moved back to the small rural Midwest town where I grew up a few years ago and was shocked at how conservative it had become. They're all aware that I'm a very liberal Democrat, and there's nothing I could do or say that would deter them from believing that President Obama was not born in Hawaii, that someone is not paid $100,000 for walking the dog, that the President himself did not design a Muslim stamp, ad nauseam. There's even one woman who parrots, "I only watch Fox news, it's fair and balanced," continually. I have asked them to stop sending me birther and all the other viral e-mails that they consider gospel. They know I will not discuss politics with any of them, and they can talk about my misguided ways all they want. They really aren't worth a stroke. :) I did, however, join the county Democratic party and am now a member of the executive committee. Just to talk to sane people once in a while.

Same here. :) When I was a kid I thought meanness - was just from ignorance of facts and that

a little explanation or reminder would wise them up. You know, "can't just cancel 'welfare' because, remember, that program feeds poor children." LOL! Took me years to wise up. Such a waste of everyone's time.

These days, none of us are kids any more, or innocent, and some are very good company as long conversation stays local--about us and ours--and away from that world out there.
What about all the corporate welfare out there? - nm

O'Keefe Documentary Claims To Uncover College Support Of ISIS Support ClubApr 02, 2015
So, I read on a friend's private conservative blog elsewhere that James O'Keefe, a conservative documentary filmmaker, had just "caught red-handed" some college administrators at a university in Florida who were "encouraging and supporting" ISIS supporters.  I like my friend, but, erm, I don't always agree with his politics and  I'm not so sure his assertion is actually the case on this one.  In fact, the blog author wrote his post based on his assumption on a ...

Bernake Sounds Warning On Growing DeficitApr 14, 2010
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. "These choices are difficult, and it always seems easier to put them off -- until the day they cannot be put off anymore," Bernanke said in a speech. "But unless we as a nation demonstrate a strong commitment to fiscal re ...

Racism Still Blights Southern US Juries: StudyJun 08, 2010
By Agence France-PresseMonday, June 7th, 2010 -- 11:00 am Having an "out of wedlock child" was enough to remove a black juror from a 1998 Mississippi murder trial involving an African-American and a white victim. Since then, nothing much has changed in the old south, a newly released study has said. When it was all over, Alvin Robinson was found guilty by a jury of 10 whites and two blacks, and sentenced to 20 years behind bars for a murder he claimed was in self defense. Two years later, an ...

Same-sex Marriage. Excellent Dec 02, 2009
A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj. Nidal Hasan, the accused killer of 13 people at Fort Hood, had entered the officers club there with a nice handbag on his arm, perhaps a Gucci tote, he would have been out of the Army by the end of the week. Since he was merely antisocial, a misfit, an incompetent psychiatrist and a likely Islamic fanatic, he was retained and promoted. This says something about America. On the subject of gays, we a ...
