I'm still getting excited with each new state that joins in.  I really didn't expect to see this kind of momentum to this degree during my lifetime.  It's the Civil Rights Movement of our day, and I couldn't be happier to watch its progress unfold.

Same-sex marriages start in New Jersey, 14th state to recognize such unions

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
  • Newark mayor conducts marriages of several same-sex couples
  • A court denied the state's request to temporarily prevent such marriages last week
  • New Jersey has allowed same-sex civil unions since 2007

(CNN) -- Marsha Shapiro and Louise Walpin married each other for the third time early Monday. But this time, it was especially memorable: They were among the first to tie the knot after same-sex marriage became legal in New Jersey.

A rabbi first "married" the couple in 1992 in a Jewish ceremony. They married a second time in New York in August 2012 after same-sex marriage became legal there.

The third time was just after midnight Thursday in the Garden State. The couple helped pave the way there through a 2011 lawsuit that brought about the change. New Jersey now becomes the 14th state to recognize gay marriages.

Shapiro and Walpin were married in the home of state Sen. Raymond Lesniak, who championed same-sex marriage in the legislature.

Obama: Gay marriage 'should be legal'

Throughout the state other gay couples exchanged vows in early morning ceremonies.

At the Newark City Hall, Mayor Cory Booker married seven couples, two of them heterosexual. He had refused to conduct any marriage ceremonies until same-sex marriages were legal in the state.

"It is officially past midnight," Booker said. "Marriage is equal in New Jersey."

Chris Christie drops challenge to same-sex marriages

High court clears the way

On Friday, the New Jersey Supreme Court denied the state's request to temporarily prevent such marriages.

Troy Stevenson, executive director of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, said last week that the high court's decision means "the door is open for love, commitment and equality under the law."

"This is a huge victory for New Jersey's same-sex couples and their families," added Hayley Gorenberg, deputy legal director of gay rights group Lambda Legal and the organization's lead attorney on the case. "Take out the champagne glasses -- wedding bells will soon be ringing in New Jersey!"

That enthusiasm was not shared by everyone.

"It is extremely disappointing that the New Jersey Supreme Court has allowed the ruling of an activist judge to stand pending its appeal through the court system," said Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, last week. "All in all, today's ruling is another sad chapter in watching our courts usurp the rights of voters to determine issues like this for themselves."

Gov. Chris Christie's administration appealed, and asked the court to delay, a lower court's September 27 order that the state must allow same-sex couples to marry beginning October 21, rather than give them the label "civil union."

The appeal will be heard in January. But the state Supreme Court on Friday declined to delay the September order in the meantime, writing that "the state has not shown a reasonable probability that it will succeed on the merits" of the appeal.

"When a party presents a clear case of ongoing unequal treatment, and asks the court to vindicate constitutionally protected rights, a court may not sidestep its obligation to rule for an indefinite amount of time," the 20-page decision read. "Under those circumstances, courts do not have the option to defer."

Where sex-same marriage is legal

New Jersey has recognized civil unions between same-sex couples since 2007, after the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled that the state must allow same-sex couples all the rights and benefits of marriage. As far as state rights and benefits went, civil unions and marriages differed only in label.

Three states offer civil unions, but not marriage, to same-sex couples. They are Colorado, Hawaii and Illinois.

Same-sex marriage is now legal in 14 U.S states -- California, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington -- as well as the District of Columbia.

Same-sex marriage is banned in every state not mentioned above, except for New Mexico, which has no laws banning or allowing it.

marriage - Effie

I so wish my partner was still alive so we could be married. I always talked with her about wanting to get married and she always said it would never be allowed.. she first came out during the times when the cops still raided the gay bars and threw everyone in jail over the weekend.. she never believed we would ever be able to legally marry. If she were still alive, I would be dragging her to a state that would allow us to get married. Sigh...

I wish she were too, Effie. And my aunt who died at 103 - a few months ago would be glad. Just this

[ In Reply To ..]
would not have given her the life she might have had, though. Not that we know she was gay - her religion did not allow her to be gay, so she wasn't. She never married.

Well, Washington State would have welcomed you both with open arms, Effie! (sm) - LoveKnowsNoBounds

I love living in a state at the forefront of progress. :) Thought I was losing my mind back in Texas.

LOL, one dislike. Get with the program, lady. - Wrong Side of History

[ In Reply To ..]
LOL.

It's now 2 dislikes - here's why

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't care who marries who. Their lives don't affect mine. Their marriages don't affect mine. Guy wants to marry guy fine. Girl wants to marry girl fine. Guy wants to marry girl fine. I DON'T CARE! Keep it in your own bedroom. Stop parading it around like it's some sort of badge. Some people are gay. It's a fact of life. Anyone wants to marry anyone I wish them best of luck. After 30 years its still not as easy as it was the first few years.

With that said STOP CRAMMING IT DOWN OUR THROATS! Enough already. People are no better than others because they are gay. They are also no worse then others. Stop enough already with the count down. Just be happy that some states allow gay marriage. I hope they all do, but that is my personal opinion and yours too. Stop cramming it down everyone throats like only your opinion counts, only your wishes count. There are other people who don't want that and have their beliefs too. Their opinions and beliefs are just important.

JUST ENOUGH ALREADY WITH THE COUNTDOWN. It's very immature. That is why I gave it the dislike. GIVE IT A REST and stop putting up pics of gays kissing and holding hands and cuddling up. I don't want to have it thrown in my face all the time. Just one of those things like commercials for condoms or gonnorrhea or sexual commercials being played while my young children watch TV. Keep what you do sexually with someone else in your bedroom. It doesn't belong plastered all over the place no matter what sexual orientation you are.

Oh yeah, and did I mention gay people are no better than heterosexual people. They are no worse either, so stop acting like they are.

If I could dislike her post 100 times I would.

Maybe if it had not been opposed with such gusto and moral righteousness - in the first place,

[ In Reply To ..]
it might not be such a widely publicized event when gays are given the same rights as heterosexuals, including their right to PDA. I see nothing in your post that suggests you find heterosexuals kissing a revolting experience.

Also, you could have skipped the post and saved yourself from seeing another happy gay couple together since the OP gave a warning of the content, so you actually chose to see it again.

For that reason, I would dislike your post more than once if I could, too.

You don't come off as someone who doesn't care. - You seem pretty charged

[ In Reply To ..]
about it, actually.

I have to bring this up.... - Rose

[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, I am not gay, but I have had 2 very close friends who were - one was open, the other was not - both have now passed. Both of them discussed with me the heartache of being gay and the wish that they had not been born gay simply because of the constraints that it put on their lives. Neither was ever able to become a parent which they both deeply yearned for. My question to "society" as we used to call it is, why do we keep telling gay people that they should be proud to be gay? Isn't it biological? Therefore it is a physical "condition" with potential for medical research so that those who would rather not be gay might have a course of action to live straight? I know I am going to get hammered for this, but since we are "born" gay and it is our body that is gay, shouldn't we have the right to change that, if medicine would just be allowed to research ways to make that possible? I can only imagine the outcry if a group of researchers decided that they were going to work on how to "reverse" homosexuality. But there are a lot of other things we can change about ourselves, if we choose to, just not our sexual orientation - because we are supposed to be proud of it. What if we are not? What if we would like to change our mind to match our anatomy? Is that wrong? Okay, hammer away....

Well, there are people who have - sex changes.

[ In Reply To ..]
So, although that's not the same thing, people do try to change things about themselves that they don't feel is right. I don't know how one could change themselves from being gay to straight, though.

I just want people to be happy with themselves. I would hope a gay person wouldn't feel the need to be anything other than what they are. That's how I live my life, and I want everyone to be able to do the same. I hate that there are gay people out there who are afraid to be who they are for fear of discrimination and judgment, not only by their peers, but many times their church or their family, which is supposed to be there in their greatest time of need for love and support.

Sure. Absolutely people should be able to change - their orientation to match their bodies, if

[ In Reply To ..]
they can.

And absolutely, we're very busy researching the brain, and studying how we're imprinted with sexual orientation and how to change it is something researchers should be able to do. It's knowledge. And it would lead to greater freedom--but not necessarily the kind conservatives appreciate.

I'm thinking that in addition to homosexuals wanting to change to straight would inevitably be straights wanting to change to homosexual. Why? Beats me, but remember the undoubtedly ancient saying, "It takes all kinds to make a world." :)

No hammering here but it sounds a lil Stepford Wife to me... - clb

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand what you are saying. I was born the way I am too (straight BTW) and I am proud of that. I'm proud just to be me period. That's how it should be for everyone. I do have things I wish I could change about myself as in some physical features but who doesn't? I support anyone wanting to change their gender to match what's in their mind but it really is about hearts, not parts. I'm not gender confused (for lack of a better word) so I don't know what that feels like. However, where does the line end? If we could change sexual orientation thru science, what's next? I don't want cookie cutter clones walking around out there, that's just creepy!

But I get what you're saying.

My MarriageJun 27, 2015
So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS. The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...

A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj.
