How many think that marriage is overrated?

Posted: Feb 3, 2010

overrated?...I mean everyone has different life experiences with love etc.

But, for those who are happily married ... How many of you have one dark little corner of your mind where you wish that you were not married? .. nothing to do with bad marriages..but those who actually live a good married life ... but still have that nagging what if?

What if you have a place unhibited by male presence .. not having to deal with another person's moods and needs .. selfish? perhaps..but truthfully how many out there still just wonder?

I find myself feeling lucky to have someone to share life ... but the pessimistic side of me just doesn't buy it completely.

If you're in a happy marriage, nurture, and enjoy it. Being alone just for the sake of it, sucks. IMO Some people like living alone, but that's not me. I like my relationship with Sweetie because he lets me do my own thing. No controlling.

Right now I'm finding it EXTREMELY overrated - JustMe

But that's attributable to the person to whom I'm married.

Husband is not only that but also my best friend - Special lady

Even knowing him for years and years, we only have been married now for about 9. Hard to believe, but no amount of money could ever take his place. I am totally spoiled, he not only is a hard worker but also cooks for us. He bought me a BMW and I had no idea what kind of car it was! He and I spend a lot of time together and really would be lost without him. He is the love of my life.

Happily married and - love it

My hubby and I met young and got married young. We knew each other for about a year before he proposed and we got married 6 months after that. We DEFINITELY went through some rough patches in our marriage due to financial stress and family stressors.

But now, I wouldn't trade single life for anything. I know we still have a lot of life to live, but we've been married almost 5 years now, and I couldn't be happier. We have a beautiful 2-year-old daughter and are trying for another. We have become best friends, and I couldn't imagine my life without him.

We definately don't have much money, small house, can barely pay bills, can't even afford to go out to dinner (literally about twice a year), but I'm happy. I know someday we'll have more, but I think it is the hard parts in life that bring those who are truly meant to be closer together.

I don't think it's overrated, but I think it's not for everyone. - silver anniversary

Hubby and I celebrated our 25th anniversary a week ago today. There were definitely a good number of days in that time when I wished I weren't married, and I'm sure he had days like that, too. But, those days were generally isolated incidents, and I have to say that there were more of them when our children were young. Bringing up kids can be very stressful! Now that they are grown, hubby and I have more time for each other AND more time to be independent. And that's the part I really love!

Some people.... or more accurately, some combination of people, are just not good. My husband and I are both pretty independent. Before he came along, I actually broke up with a couple of really sweet guys who were just too darn attentive. I felt smothered. But they went on to be wonderful husbands to women who like that sort of thing.

For me, it's not overrated. It's really enhanced my life. I would even say that we haven't worked that hard at marriage... at least to me it hasn't seemed like hard work. We're just well suited, and lucky to have found each other, because I think that our particular temperaments could easily have been problematic had we been paired with different types of people.

Marriage is most definitely overrated. I'm sick to death of all these commercials for matchmaking.com, etc. People act as though you are nobody with a partner. What ever happened to individualism? When people marry believe it or not they change (or they change you into what they want to you be or do). People should be happy just being themselves. There is no reason to get married.

I am married. Happily? I have my moments. Most of the time I just exist. I have a whole other life inside of me, but I am tied down. I certainly don't want another man or person in my life. Being me would just be better. I don't have "one dark little corner of my mind" where I wish I were not married. I have the whole area of my mind where I wish that. :-)

Yes, you should listen to your pessimistic side of you. Don't buy it. Marriage is not all what it is cracked up to be. I would be so much happier being on my own. As it is I do everything here (bills, shop, cook, laundry, etc), so nothing would change. Except I'd finally get to be me.

P.S. - No kids here and glad for it. But what I think about parents wanting to start a family? Well I don't think anyone wants to know how I feel about that, so won't offend anyone here.

My advice to anyone wanting to get married now adays. Live together. Do not get married. There is no benefit and it serves no purpose.

I believe God calls us to different vocations: married, single, religious. It really depends upon the individual. Great idea: Pray for guidance on this! If you are married, treat your spouse with love, just as you want to be loved.

My MarriageJun 27, 2015
So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS. Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege. The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...

Same-sex Marriage. Excellent Dec 02, 2009
A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj. Nidal Hasan, the accused killer of 13 people at Fort Hood, had entered the officers club there with a nice handbag on his arm, perhaps a Gucci tote, he would have been out of the Army by the end of the week. Since he was merely antisocial, a misfit, an incompetent psychiatrist and a likely Islamic fanatic, he was retained and promoted. This says something about America. On the subject of gays, we a ...

Defense Of Marriage ActFeb 23, 2011
I'm just curious how the president and the attorney general can decide which laws to defend and which ones not to.  Whether you agree with this law or not, it is a law and to be repealed, it has to go through certain channels, not just being ignored by the WH. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110223/ap_on_re_us/us_gay_marriage ...

Marriage Opinions PleaseOct 23, 2014
May I please vent and get a few opinions on this?  My husband works with a lady who developed a crush on him.  I would not call my husband "flirty" but he is one of those people who are extremely nice all of the time and I could see myself even getting the wrong idea and maybe thinking he was flirting with me if I didn't know him.  So, the lady he works with apparently developed a crush (we have been married 18 years) and she knows a mutual friend of mine and spoke about my h ...
