Trying to keep out of a religious discussion... - Zville MT

but keeping on a political discussion, how will this help him/hurt him in the election?

Take marriage out of government, IMHO - separate church and state

[ In Reply To ..]
I think we should do a TOTAL reversal on this. I think everyone is entitled to a civil union under the law with all benefits of property, etc. Marriage should ONLY take place within a church or religious organization. How can anyone argue with this? Let me know.

Well... - KC

What would the differences be between the two? As it is now you can have a religious marriage or a totally secular marriage. Marriages aren't only religious (Vegas, anyone?). They are a legal union. Should we totally change the whole thing? Would the partners still be called "husband" or "wife"? Why differentiate between the two (civil unions and marriages) if they are exactly the same?

I'm not necessarily arguing against the idea, just wondering about some of the details and whether or not it's really worth all the red tape and legalities that would go into changing it.
Nevada doesn't recognize same-sex marriage - sm

but will perform "civil only" services that have absolutely NOTHING with the law. They may have a paper that serves to "prove" that they are engaged in a "civil union," but this is not a legally-binding document that gives legal rights to the other partner.

So please don't say, "Why differentiate between the two (civil unions and marriages) if they are exactly the same?"

They are NOT the same, at least according to Las Vegas (the example you provided), and that might be a good point to bring to the attention of other posters on this board.

Nobody is bothering me except the states that ban same-sex marriage. I'm not gay, but in these arbitrary states, who knows what they'll stop at? Will they ban brown-haired people? Will we be forced to live in a certain neighborhood by "law"?

With the current Republican atmosphere and especially the crooked Supreme Court that we have, I'm not recognizing my country any more. In fact, it's beginning to resemble the Third Reich more than anything.
Not what I meant. - KC
[ In Reply To ..]
When I said "why differentiate between the two when they are the same," I wasn't referring to current civil union laws in Nevada, or anywhere else. I was referring to the idea that some propose that legally recognized, same-sex unions have the same rights as married couples, but just don't get to be called a marriage.

The "Vegas" example was simply to illustrate that as things are now, you can get legally married without bringing religion or church into it at all, just like going down to the courthouse and getting married. You can be atheist and still get legally married, and if people are trying to put a stop to that I haven't heard about it (not saying it doesn't happen), so that tells me that this isn't about religion, it's about not wanting gays to be allowed to marry.
Looks like Third Reich - Thanks to Libs and Dems

Your post is so factless, it is laughable. The current Democratic "atmosphere" is anything goes, only if the the Dems/Libs say so. They want to control what you eat, if you smoke, what healthcare you are allowed or not allowed to have, regulate every breath your take.

Thanks to the LIBERAL SC, child porn can be viewed nonstop without penalty of law. The LIBERAL judges want to make pedophilia a psychiatric disorder protected by the disability act.

Nowhere has anyone performed like you state other than the Dems/Libs. They are the most intolerant, obnoxious, self-serving, self-righteous bigots and racists ever encountered.

I somewhat agree with you. I think that every union.. - sm

recognized by the government should be a civil union whether heterosexual or homosexual. Whether it is called marriage by the people engaged in said civil union is of absolutely no consequence except in the hearts and minds of those people and their religious convictions, or lack thereof.

In modern days, marriage has a much broader meaning....a close or intimate union, relationship, sometimes a "marriage" of ideas, cooperations getting together, you get the picture.

Call it what you will, the legal definition of marriage should be the civil union of two people who love and are commited to each other and wish to share their love and their lives together regardless of gender.

There are even some liberals who aren't for gay marriage and some middle of the road people who aren't for it either. I could see it potentially hurting him there. However, even though he hasn't made gay marriage legal, him just saying he is for it will lock in a vote from most...if not all...homosexuals. So it could potentially hurt him and help him. Either way...I still think the economy will be the deciding factor for most Americans. If the economy still stinks or, God forbid, a double dip recession occurs, I don't think Obama will be re-elected. As of right now, I think the presidential race is going to be a close one. This isn't gonna be a win by a landside by either candidate, IMO.

I choose to believe Obama when he says that he could not reasonably explain to Sasha and Malia, who have friends with same-sex parents, why their friends' parents should not be allowed to marry like all other US Citizens. You do not have to personally condone something in order to see that to outlaw someone's civil right is wrong.

My mother thinks gay people "have a screw loose" and are "just not right in the head" but that "who the heck am I to deny someone the right to marry who they love?" Gotta luv mom LOL.

As far as a certain religion owning the word "married"...horse puckey...on certain legal forms the boxes to check are SINGLE or MARRIED. It has become a LEGAL term and for any religion to say nana boo-boo you cant use it....i say grow up. If gay marriages cannot be made legal because it hurts the sanctity of marriage...start stoning people for adultery (which is RAMPANT among heteros) like the bible says and outlaw divorce (does that not hurt the sanctity of marriage) or mind your own business, no one is forcing a hetero to marry a homosexual!!
Correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure some - will), but didn't
[ In Reply To ..]
marriage have it's origins NOT in religion, but in law, as in a way to pass down property, especially since women legally could not possess property and were, in fact, considered property themselves? Honestly, I don't care who marries whom; they have nothing to do with the sanctity of my own wonderful 21-year-old marriage.

Yes actually Jon Stewart read the definition on one of his shows last week....

Marriage originated as a social construct that allowed family patriarchs to facilitate the transfer of chattel property such as livestock or daughters.

Sounds like any woman not in a marriage arranged by their father is also demeaning the origin of marriage...so how many of you married who your dad picked? Anyone? SINNERS!!!

official opinion as this is the...what...3rd time he has changed his stance on the issue. Gay marriage just isn't high on my priority list. We have much more pressing issues in our country. Of course, that is easy for me to say because I am not gay and am married to the person I love and have been for almost 11 years now.

I guess if I were in the gay community, I wouldn't be jumping up and down for joy until Obama does something like legalizing gay marriage. Just saying he is for gay marriage doesn't do much other then him saying he is for it. Nothing legally has changed with his statement.

When it comes to gay marrige, I'm neither for or against it. I don't understand it because I'm not gay and I was raised to believe it is wrong, but who am I to say you can't be with who you love. So I'm torn and will neither fight for or against it.

Trigger Happy: I am quoting a part of your - post below SM

[ In Reply To ..]
" I am not gay and am married to the person I love and have been for almost 11 years now." You then said that you don't understand it. I think if you take to heart what you wrote about yourself and then apply this to a person who is gay and wants to be able to say what you said, it might be easier to understand the whys of it. I know it is hard sometimes for us to put ourselves in other people's places, especially if being gay is something you were taught was wrong, but I think any gay couple would love to be able to state what you said about their committed relationship. In 2012, it is hard for me to understand why people think gay individuals should not have the rights that everyone else has. When people say that civil unions are fine, just not marriage, it is still discrimination IMO. Why do heterosexuals feel they have the right to put conditions on the rights of gays?

I totally understand what you are saying. - Trigger Happy

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not going to knock someone for wanting to be with someone they love regardless of who the couple is. I have a few gay friends who know where I stand on the issue, but we are still friends and I'm always nice to them and their partner. So I'm not a completely heartless person who condemns all gay people to he!!. lol However, I don't think schools should be reading stories to my young children about gay penguins either. That is a discussion I would like to have with my kids and not for the school to discuss with them. They can talk about acceptance and being kind without bringing sexual orientation into the conversation....especially with very young kids.

I am neither for nor am I against same-sex marriage. If it happens, okay. If it doesn't happen, okay.

I still don't get why so many people are praising President Obama for his announcement though. He basically said he supported same-sex marriage without giving any intention to helping them make their wish come true. If he truly supports them, why won't he put himself out there and do what he can to make it legal? I guess to me it just looks like he was fishing for votes from the gay community without conveying his willingness to truly help their cause.

It's all pretty fuzzy. - sm

Civil unions aren't necessarily considered legal "marriage." There are also states in this union that recognize "common law marriages," where no paperwork is required, just the fact that a couple has presented themselves to the "public" as a "couple" plus other items such as property ownership, hospital visitation per living will, etc.

Pennsylvania is one of those states, and I remember a guy who got "married," invited people from all over the country and then the next day declared it was all a "joke." Yeah, well the joke was on him! A videotape of them taking their vows doesn't necessarily mean they're married or unmarried. The only way to settle this would be to go through the courts.

This guy thought he was very clever and funny by pulling off this stunt; however, the joke is on him once a jury sees the wedding video where this guy very freely him taking his "vows," viewed a gift registry, etc. Like I said, the state involved here is Pennsylvania, and all that 7-year limitation talk isn't true, either. All they needed was a farce like the videotape of the "wedding," and it could be overnight if the other components were in place to grant or deny the marriage. In this case, it seems that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (or anyone denying the marriage) is in the driver's seat.

So it can be a serious problem if it's a state that would recognize either common law or that specifically seeks verification of this "wedding," along with a valid marriage license, etc.

South Carolina - got it right!
