Republican Sen. Portman now supports same-sex marriage

Posted: Mar 18, 2013

After recently learning that his son is gay.

Senator Portman co-sponsored the 1996 federal ban on same-sex marriage.

"Knowing that my son is gay prompted me to consider the issue from another perspective: that of a dad who wants all three of his kids to lead happy, meaningful lives with the people they love ... and my belief that we are all children of God."

Its funny how right after the Republican National Convention last week and a couple weeks after Benjamin Carson wiped the smile off Obama's face there is a scramble to expedite the gay agenda and make nice all of a sudden with the Republicans. The White House is so phony I can't believe more people don't see it. When one says you're on the outside looking in they mean this, when you are watching the goings on in the White House, its like we are the audience and they are the movie we're watching. You can tell who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.

Not quite getting the connection there, but - OK.

A pro- gay rights Republican Senator is a good thing, but such a shame his enlightenment came after so many years of hurting and supporting the abuse of others like his son.

From my readings on this, he knew about his son - for awhile before he SM

I really couldn't count the pubs I've known whose - "principles" take a complete change when

[ In Reply To ..]
it's their own interests at stake. Then it's different. But not always different for EVERYONE, and in that I give Senator Portman credit. He's changed his principle for everyone.

For instance, we have a friend with MS who needs special assistance via government programs. When it comes to his own issues only he's a real "gimme" voter, complaining often that government isn't doing enough. For others, he's the same far-right reactionary he's always been, disapproving of anything and everything done by government, and, like so many, he has absolutely no problem holding 2 opposing views at once.

Takes at least some personal impact to overcome the general lack of empathy. - SM

Conservatives Aren’t Necessarily Empathy-Impaired…

By Anne Laurie April 30th, 2012

… but the politically engaged conservatives mostly are. Thomas Edsall, at the NYTimes, on “Finding the Limits of Empathy“:

… Ravi Iyer, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Southern California who analyzes the differences in the moral outlook of conservatives and liberals, has posted an exceptionally interesting collection of data on his “Politics and Moral Psychology Blog.” (Iyer’s research is reinforced by the work of Philip E. Tetlock at Wharton and Linda J. Skitka of the University of Illinois.)…

Politically engaged liberals and conservatives exhibit strikingly different levels of empathy. The following chart, constructed by Iyer, illustrates this beautifully:

The more interested in politics a conservative is, the lower his (or her) level of empathy. Liberals move in the opposite direction: the more interested in politics they are, the more empathetic. Empathy, in case you’re wondering, is measured by responses to 28 statements in the “Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index,” including “I often have tender, concerned feelings for people less fortunate than me,” “I sometimes find it difficult to see things from the ‘other guy’s’ point of view,” and “Sometimes I don’t feel very sorry for other people when they are having problems.”

In the 2010 election, 42 percent of voters identified themselves as conservative; 38 percent said they were moderate; and 20 percent said they were liberal. If that division obtains in 2012 and beyond, the proportion of conservative to liberal voters in the electorate should give liberals pause, especially insofar as they expect elected officials to propose and pass legislation the underlying purpose of which is to help those most in need…

I’m a little suspicious of the sudden rush to “prove” that if our political process is irretrievably borked, it’s all down to what’s broken in our individual brains. But there is a certain logic, if you accept the theory that people mostly get interested in politics — in spending precious time and energy on elections that could otherwise go towards work, family life, getting more use out of that expensive gym membership, or keeping up with the local sports franchise — when they perceive that something is “wrong” with the existing order. For conservatives, that “wrongness” is hardly likely to be an overwhelming sense that Tha Gubmint just isn’t doing enough for those people who are… unlike the aggreived conservative.

technology to foster divisions between the left and right, and center for that matter. They've never had such power before, and my observations have been that manipulators for conservatism strongly push people on the right to great callousness. We have been living in a very mean era for some time.

Remember, for instance, the 1990s when every police show and sitcom contained a reference to men getting raped in jail for a guaranteed smirk of satisfaction or laugh? Empathy Concern Average NEGATIVE 3.4?

So, I'm wondering: What would that graph look like if the research were conducted in a kinder, gentler culture?

no matter what Obama said. Also someone can believe that marriage should be between and man and a woman yet think it is wrong to deny certain citizens a right that other citizens are granted.

By the way, here is the reason he gave..

In an interview at the White House with ABC News, Obama said he's been supportive of civil unions for gays and lesbians, but has decided "that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married."

He said that he still believes that states should decide the law for themselves, but suggested that the tide is turning in the U.S. -- despite a contrary vote Tuesday in North Carolina. He said his daughters, Sasha and Malia, have friends whose parents are same sex couples.

"It wouldn't dawn on them that somehow their friends' parents would be treated differently," Obama said. "It doesn't make sense to them and frankly, that's the kind of thing that prompts a change in perspective."

I have not voted to cut my taxes ever--because we always - have destitute and ill vets and other poor we

[ In Reply To ..]
are shamefully neglecting.

I have a number of times voted to increase my own taxes. We have also a couple of times donated government tax rebate checks to causes we felt the money should have gone to.

Today's left is typically progressive, i.e., believes in working through the power of government to make our country better. That means we believe taxes can be an instrument to build a great nation, not just a necessary evil to keep stumbling along.

As for your statement, it really sounds to me like a classic example of "projection."

Here's a definition: "...projection is a psychological defense mechanism whereby one projects one's own undesirable thoughts, motivations, desires, feelings, and so on onto someone else [or in the case of politics another party]. The principle of projection is well established in psychology."

It's extremely, extremely common in right-wing politics. Can't defend denying healthcare to sick vets? Insist it's actually the other party that's doing it. Then despise them for it.

Really? I voted in the last election to raise my own taxes. - Nacho

[ In Reply To ..]
As I believe many liberals also did. The taxes were for various things, but mainly education and conservation efforts.

It's called putting your money where your mouth is.

Given the current makeup of the Republican - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
party, it took much courage for this man to see things differently and to EXPRESS publicly his new feelings.

I'm sure he will be shunned by his own party now, simply because he has walked in his own shoes and believes what his conscience reflects.

Look what they did to Chris Christie simply because he worked WITH the President during the hurricane. He was not invited to the CPAC circus as a result.

Yup, they'll try to hurt him. Considering the exodus - from the GOP, tho, maybe

[ In Reply To ..]
he'll get more support from moderates to to replace a newly hostile base.

I don't know, of course, but I don't believe a lot of the wealthy people who fund conservative campaigns give a hoot about this issue (they just use it as a wedge issue to keep the base hopping). Some do, yes, but demonstrating a continued willingness to dance on the strings where money's concerned may be enough to keep the funding flowing.

You are so so judgmental... so wrong. You - know NOTHING of what you speak. nm

My MarriageJun 27, 2015
So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS. Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege. The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...
