Only if they preach violence - Empirelady

I'm curious, truly, and not being snide. Why do you feel that allowing the LGBT community to have the same rights as everyone else in this country takes anything away from anyone else or affects you in any way? Churches can certainly continue to preach their beliefs, as long as it doesn't promote violence against anyone.
This is not a war on religion. You are free to continue to worship and believe whatever you wish. This is just stating that religious beliefs are not allowed to be the law of the land, which is exactly what the founding fathers intended, separation of church and state.
I'm not talking about preaching bigotry. I'm talking about - performing the marriage
[ In Reply To ..]
ceremony.
That isn't going to happen. - Empirelady

I think that is a groundless fear. Truly, what couple is going to want to be married in a church and by a pastor who they know doesn't want them? What kind of non-blessing would that be to start one's marriage? Personally, I feel if any LGBT couples push something like this in a lawsuit, it should be deemed frivolous and thrown out of court, and probably would be.
That would be my message to any LGBT people. If you have alternative choices, and you know that a church or business doesn't believe as you do, just avoid them. If you don't want their religious beliefs shoved at you, don't shove your beliefs at them. Live and let live. That being said, I do believe that businesses who think that by providing a service that is part of their business "condones" or is "participating in" a gay marriage, is seriously off the mark. If that is the case, is a gun manufacturer then complicit and participating in murder when a gun is used for such? (yes, that a whole other subject for another time; just see it as an example for now). Most Christians would say no to that question. Why is it different?
Honestly, how will performing a marriage ceremony - for a same sex couple hurt ANYONE?

I'll play devil's advocate, if you will, on this - Empirelady

I can see how forcing someone to perform a ceremony for something one truly didn't believe in could, in fact, emotionally and spiritually hurt the person who was made to do it. Of course, if they were to take that stance, I would argue that they then must never perform marriage for anyone who was previously divorced, had committed adultery, or fornicated before marriage.
That being said, I'm all for gay marriage being recognized in this country, and I rejoice at the decision made today by the Supreme Court. However, unless a church is openly preaching bigotry and violence against anyone different from themselves, I firmly believe in their right to worship as they see fit. That is what freedom of religion is all about: being able to follow your own beliefs as long as they do no harm to others who don't share those beliefs.
Not for a bakery or pizza place. It was against their beliefs - and look what happened.

What about their freedom of religion?
According to George Takei, the next step is to take on religion and churches.

actually perform the wedding ceremonies? If these places want to provide the services they advertise to Christians only, then they need to advertise as such and make themselves a private club where only Christians can use those services.
Again, I'll bring up the example I used in another post. In this line of thinking, we must now hold all gun manufacturers responsible as condoning and/or participating in any murder that occurs with a gun they have manufactured. Right?
These businesses opened their doors to THE PUBLIC for business. That means they no longer get to discriminate against anyone unless that party poses a public sanitary or safety threat or actually disrupting the business itself and its ability to operate (drunkenness, rowdiness, etc). They don't get to discriminate against anyone for how that person was born. When pizza and bakery shared their beliefs, free enterprise took place. People chose to use, or not use, their services after that. If they went under, they have no one to blame but themselves.
Religion is an individual right. It has no place - in business or government, however.
[ In Reply To ..]
We'll see how this plays out. Will Muslim businesses be held to the - same standard as Christians? Or
[ In Reply To ..]
will they get an exemption. My guess is the latter. This is about attacking Christianity.
Marriage is civil, not a religious act - Huh?
[ In Reply To ..]
Religious officials ALREADY have the right to refuse to marry couples according to their specific religious specifications. This is already the law everywhere and no one anywhere is proposing changing it.
But those same religious officials can't stop those couples from going to the state and getting a marriage license, and finding a more tolerant religious official who will give them a blessing if they want one.
If you or your denomination does not want gay people to marry, you and your denomination don't have to marry them. That was true yesterday and is true today. Just as Roman Catholic priests cannot be forced to marry divorced people, rabbis cannot be forced to marry non-Jews, and imams cannot be forced to marry non-Muslims, religious officials ALREADY have the right to refuse to marry couples according to their specific religious specifications. This is already the law everywhere and no one anywhere is proposing changing it.
I think the world would be a much better place - if religion were dumped altogether.
[ In Reply To ..]
All it does is convince one group of people that they somehow have a "divine" right to try to control other groups of people. It's a breeding ground for hatred and discrimination. It's created countless wars.
An individual has the right to believe what they want, but organized power-seeking religious groups have no useful place in a civilized world.
Thank you! - Blanche

with this decision. I do believe that if you find anyone in this life to love and be loved by, you are lucky, be it man or woman. I hesitate at acknowledging their union as the norm and okay. To me, it is not. There are a few people in my life who are gay. I love them and they me. They know I will be honest. They respect my view too.
Just because something isn't the "norm" doesn't - mean its not "okay". Live & let live

Politics-Scott Walker calls for constitutional - amendment with definition of marriage
[ In Reply To ..]
MADISON, Wisconsin — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide is a "grave mistake."
Walker issued a statement Friday reaffirming his support for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution allowing the states to define marriage.
Walker has been a longtime opponent of gay marriage, but last year during his re-election campaign he said his opinion didn't matter.
But now as he prepares for a presidential run, Walker is blasting the Supreme Court's decision, saying "five unelected judges have taken it upon themselves to redefine the institution of marriage."
Not to worry though, Walker has waffled on this before, and I am certain when he realizes his political jeopardy he will turn this around.

My MarriageJun 27, 2015So I woke up this morning and took stock of my quarter-century old heterosexual marriage, in light of yesterday's historic ruling by the SCOTUS.
Imagine my complete lack of shock and surprise when I found it was every bit as healthy, strong, and meaningful as it has always been, despite the fact that all gay Americans can now enjoy the same privelege.
The sanctity of my marriage appears entirely unaffected. Oh, and the nation hasn't been destroyed by some cataclysmic event as a resul ...
Same-sex Marriage. Excellent Dec 02, 2009A right to say 'I do'By Richard CohenTuesday, December 1, 2009 The truth is that if Maj. Nidal Hasan, the accused killer of 13 people at Fort Hood, had entered the officers club there with a nice handbag on his arm, perhaps a Gucci tote, he would have been out of the Army by the end of the week. Since he was merely antisocial, a misfit, an incompetent psychiatrist and a likely Islamic fanatic, he was retained and promoted. This says something about America. On the subject of gays, we a ...
Defense Of Marriage ActFeb 23, 2011I'm just curious how the president and the attorney general can decide which laws to defend and which ones not to. Whether you agree with this law or not, it is a law and to be repealed, it has to go through certain channels, not just being ignored by the WH.

Marriage Opinions PleaseOct 23, 2014May I please vent and get a few opinions on this? My husband works with a lady who developed a crush on him.
