I do believe, though, that the argument about baby and embryo (fetus) is probably a discussion for the religion board, so I won't even start that one here.

Just as abortion is legal. Law.

Some may believe slavery, separate but equal, prohibition should be legal, just as some believe abortion should be illegal. What we believe morally, religiously, or whatever else composes a personal belief system does not make it law.

Abortion on demand will always be incomprehensible, especially late-stage abortion, when there are thousands of couples spending millions on infertility treatment right around the corner. If the pregnant woman seeking an abortion would simply wait a few more months, she could hand that baby over to someone who would be so thankful to her for that baby. ....and I suspect the baby would be thankful too when he or she realized that the mother chose to give life instead of getting rid of the inconvenience.....My husband and I were fortunate enough to have 2 birth mothers do this and we have 2 adult children - one of whom has also been blessed by a birth mother who cared enough about her baby to place for adoption rather than terminate. I too believe this belongs on the Faith Board, but it has become a political issue.

and I can tell you there is a HUGE difference between doing that by choice (not available to me in 1966) and doing it by force of law. I was a 17-year-old rape victim who was compelled to give birth to a child that was then ripped from my arms and given to a "more appropriate" parent (read "deserving," as was made clear by social workers at the unwed mothers' home). It took decades for me to "get over it" as I was repeatedly advised to do by family and friends. Women are not broodmares put on this earth to procreate for infertile couples in search of a family. Childbirth on demand is NOT the answer.

"broodmare" is exactly the same thing I said out loud sitting here reading the above. And also thought of Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale." May we never, ever see anything resembling that kind of dystopian future (though the GOP's constant attempts to take possession of women's uteri does feel eerily similar).

You're very welcome. That's one of the few movie adaptations of a book - I'd read that I actually enjoyed.

Duvall is one of my favorite actors, so that helped. The book is still better, but this is a case where I don't think I'd suggest that you *definitely* should read the book before seeing the movie.
