Please keep messages to discussions of political issues

Posted: Apr 8, 2013

Many posts are going off track.  This is a political site.  It is to discuss politics.  It is not a site to share your hobbies whether it be scrapbooking or gardening or whatever other hobbies you enjoy.  That is why there is a Gab Board.  If you want to talk about your hobbies that is the place to discuss them.

Sometimes ridiculing posters and trying to make fun of their concerns is not the best thing to do by telling them they need to take up a hobby like scrap booking or gardening or anything else   If you don't agree with a poster, then just explain why without the ridicule.  Otherwise, just pass by the post and don't post.

Messages that clearly have nothing to do with politics will either be moved to the appropriate board or edited.  Posters come here to read about political issues not hobbies.  There is an appropriate board for everything else.

I want to thank everyone's effort in helping to keep the board to it's original intent; to discuss politics.

Thank you,

Thank yourself for agreeing to make it current issues. - Since my concern that the atmosphere

atmosphere here is bad for one's health includes my own, I will be severely limiting my involvement in future.

I am active on a...somewhat kinder and gentler political board that actually discusses political issues, and I initially came here just to speak up for liberal, progressive positions in advance of the election. I'd always avoided it for the same reasons most do and expected to leave long ago, but it turned out that expressing disagreement with those for whom meanness and hostility form the base of their political "philosophy" is addictive. Surrogates for their counterparts in our local community who are, of course, never told what others think of their views.

My attempt to turn this board to a wider range of topics was actually a sincere attempt to elevate the content and behavior of a board where all the most active posts are expressions of hostility. It didn't work.

Since the particular character of this board from a combination of the freedom of expression which has made MTStars so successful and a relatively large number of MTs who bring high levels of fear resulting from inadequate education and uncertainty about the future, this board is unlikely to change.

See you at the next election, maybe. Not until I can view its activity with my usual balance and objectivity certainly.

A poster mentioning gardening or scrapbooking in the course of a response is not a post ABOUT gardening or scrapbooking any more than this post is about toilets:

"Maybe they just dislike the reality of Obama flushing us down the drain."

Just because a poster doesn't like a turn of phrase does not mean they are being ridiculed. We all know that waving the ridicule flag has become the latest hobby of some of our less creative and insightful posters - a great many of whom who prefer to take up an entire page with pile-on insults that have n-o-t-h-i-n-g to do with politics.

The fact that you give them attention is beyond the pale. Why don't you just tell them to get a thick skin? Or do you reserve that advice for the more vociferous partisan disputes?

Thick skin - The Sarge - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a certain level of "thick skin" someone should take.

When a poster is told maybe you should take all your hate, hostility, and racism and take up a hobby and go garden or scrapbook or try a nice cup of java cos that relaxes me, or tin foil hat alert, or or don't bother your pretty little heads or go read a book cos you're not educated and all the other slews of insults thrown at them by liberals, progressives, communists, - that is an insult and ridicule and should not fall under the "oh just get a thick skin so I can insult you some more" category. I agree with the Moderator - has no place on this board.

Saying I disagree with you because this or that or saying that is the most stupid thing I've heard of, yeah get a thick skin and get over it, but not being told you are uneducated.

Anytime a conservative has posed lately they are beaten down. So much that some of them are just not posting anymore. Ya'll must be so proud.

Many of us conservatives have found other sites where we can express our feelings and concerns without the childish "tin foil hat alert" or "go get a hobby it'll do you wonders" comments. This board is filled with posters saying conservatives are uneducated when in fact it is they themselves are that are uneducated. Sick of the bully posters ganging up on posters then patting themselves on the back for the great insults they all gave. No wonder conservatives are tired of it. Not when we can have intelligent, educated, well informed adult conversations on other boards. It's a breath of fresh air to share some news and have someone ask where we read that and they go to our link and come back and actually discuss it and are told that what an interesting link and "thanks for sharing". Instead of being told a website is not credible because someone doesn't agree with it.

I've seen the insults and ridicule. Got tired of it. I just come here ever once inawhile, but nothing has changed. In the liberals viewpoints conservatives are not allowed to express their concerns. Nobody is ever supposed to say what is going on in Washington. Liberals just want that covered up and don't say anything bad about them. Well ya know what...sorry, but we have as much right to post what we want and is not deserving of the insults thrown at us.

I think the Moderator has been very generous with the liberals here. Plenty of conservative posts gone and edited when the liberals insults and ridicule stay up. Lighten up on her/him a bit.

This board is not just a liberal political site. It's for everyone.

Ridicule - LM

(love this line from your post) "Anytime a conservative has posted lately they are beaten down. So much that some of them are just not posting anymore. Ya'll must be so proud."

I know you said it facetiously, but the thing about liberals is THEY ARE PROUD. They actually LIKE beating people down, and keeping them down if they can. They're all alike. I personally know of 2 conservatives who don't come here because of the mentality and attitude of the liberals. It's a shame. This used to be a good board for discussion.

That's what I've seen here too - The Sarge - sm

Don't know why it gives them joy to ridicule others.

Sure it's on both sides, but more with the lefts. I think they had the board to themselves for so long after they drove off some conservatives that they just are not used to anyone standing up for themselves when it opposes them.

I have a friend and we joke about it, but we call this our Ouija board. LOL

It DID use to be a good place. Back a few years ago I had some great conversations with some liberal posters. They would share their view and conservatives would share theirs. We were always respectful and many posts would read I respectfully will disagree and then explained why without the ridicule. Over the past couple years though the liberal mentality has changed. Now they gleefully cut down people for their opinions, state things are not credible just because they don't agree with them. I find it funny that the news source I read they tell me is not credible and a week or so later the same news story is on CNN then all of a sudden it becomes credible. Funny, after graduating from high school some (gulp) 35 years ago (LOL) I thought dealing with that mentality was gone. Who knew. :-)

Examples of conservative "concerns" - are

[ In Reply To ..]
Quoting Obama when it was someone else who really said the words.

Cutting and pasting someone else's opinion from a blog and representing it as their own words.

Citing fictional blogs as the news.

Hit and run comments like "Baloney, Obama is the King of Ignorance..." or "Obama IS failing the country," without any substantive example, link, or statistic, so no discussion is even possible.

Purposely misspelling the president's name just to invite a criticism, not a discussion.

Replies by conservatives such as, "You post just shows how little you know, and how little you want to know."

Cutting and pasting from legit articles, but purposely omitting key phrases which completely change the context.

And if you consider insults and ridicule as proving a statements made by conservatives incorrect by facts, not something from an opinion page, then you have a point, because there is a lot of that going on here.

There are more, but I think I've made my point.

I'm sincere when I say I happy you've found a site that fits your discussion preferences!

facts that you are belly aching about. Pretty clear you are unaware of the recent employment STATs, the reading of personal emails, the sweeping of bank accounts under Obamacare, the 16-page document by Obama to see if you "qualify" and oh BTW - sign up as a card-carrying Democrat, then we'll give you Obamacare, unless of course you are an illegal alien, then you get everything for nothing. Let's not forget the Dodd-Frank pushed by Obama that is nothing but more taxes to keep the middle class down. Oh yeah, and there is at 15+ new taxes already imposed by Obamacare with 16,000 pages of NEW regulations on what your MD can and cannot provide for YOUR healtespiratory. Then there is the increase in taxes country wide by Obama on the middle class. And let's not forget the endless drones monitoring your every move.

Obama IS A TOTAL FAILURE, but if you actually bothered to research something beside the latest slur you can hurl at conservatives, you might actually know that. P.S. Look it up on your Obama-monitored web sites - all the above is there.

failing the citizens of this country. That in many parts of the country these politicians have rigged the system so they have no worries about being reelected? It should be them against us, not us against us. When we argue back and forth, left or right, we are doing what they want us to do, thus ignoring the fact that they are all failing us.

Agreed 100% - ZvilleMT

You're right - when we nitpick on the smaller issues, we completely ignore the fact that what they are doing is only helping them, not us. Have you noticed that when they all run for re-election, none of them talk about what they have done to make the country better? They only talk about what their opponent either hasn't done or what they did wrong - that should be our first clue that none of them are actually trying to come up with real solutions.
