Something to beware of/privacy issues
Posted: Jan 3, 2016
I have been spending the day studying. The issues of privacy and what lawyers call a "reasonable expectation of privacy" came up. A girlfriend of mine recently (just on a whim) did that thing where you can have your DNA tested by that organization called Ancestry--the purpose was to determine her ethnicity. (Her parents were both Italian immigrants and she herself was born in NYC.) Anyway, she paid about $100 and the test told her she was 70% Italian, 20% German, and 10% West Indian. The West Indian part really surprised her, and I began to wonder how accurate these tests are. As I got doing more research, I also became concerned about privacy issues. Another friend of mine (also a legal guy) was able to pull up enough information about a third friend that he could have done identity theft if he had been of a mind to do it. (He was just looking at the system and everybody involved knew he was doing it, so he was not snooping or anything like that. We were just some curious law students basically goofing off.) Because we study the right to privacy so much in the legal world, I did some research online and found this:

Frankly, it kind of scares me. I don't need a private DNA agency to tell me that I am your basic Irish background Chicago white guy; kinda boring background, really. What I do care about is how my and others' DNA information might be used in the future once it is collected. I guess I am feeling about giving out your DNA information the same way I do about giving people your General Power of Attorney: You should almost never do it, and only then with legal advice specific to your own situation. Does the risk justify doing it? Same with the DNA stuff. Where does your DNA information go? Can it be data mined by insurance companies? How is it stored? How is it protected? I am just uncomfortable with how much invasion into our privacy there is. I don't know, maybe I am just concerning myself with this instead of studying like I should be doing on this cold nasty day, but it just seems kind of concerning to me. Is anybody else concerned about the lack of privacy in America today? Maybe I should stop studying and go out for coffee or something!;
I was actually thinking about doing it - DNA testing

Digital databases are hacked routinely. If you decide to get your DNA tested, you need to assume it will become public property sooner or later (and government property immediately).
As for that West Indian in the pedigree--doesn't surprise me a bit. Most people in this country are of mixed racial heritage whether they know it or not, and Italian would be an easy group for part-black to pass as.
I think a more immediate privacy issue for some people will be that if you decide to encypt your files on a Windows 10 computer using Microsoft's Bitlocker encryption, Redmond will have a copy of your encryption key, which means the government will have a copy. Anyone wonder why they pressured the TrueCrypt people to disappear that program? Now ya know. The couldn't break it and they couldn't get a back door put in it, so they had to try to kill it.
Get TrueCrypt while you can still find a place with a download for it:

I was told by a friend who works in med records that most places our medical information is farmed out to for data collection, money collection, etc. do not even have HIPPA laws, so they could do anything they want with what they have, including our DOBs and SS #. Wow that is very scary. My hubs cardiologist told us one of the companies they farm out to farmed out to INdia, and they were not getting paid on time, so one of their MTs held their dictations "hostage" until she was paid. I wonder how many Americans realize this? Just too stunned for words.

This is a very famous care of offshoring gone wrong. Every law student in the world knows this case because it is taught in classes. Here is the original article from the newspaper that covered it:

The 2003 debacle was not the only time this prestigious West Coast medical center messed up regarding medical privacy. There was also this case:

School Privacy Practices?Feb 09, 2014Does anyone know the answer to this question with a link that I could read about it? My child's school is ran by a few women that I'm sorry but they honestly LOVE drama. They are the type that backstab, talk about people, try to get people in trouble, etc. My child was out of school (with a doctor's excuse) and FIVE different people from the school questioned her on why she was out and wanted to know exactly what she went to the doctor for. Then, the next t ...

Conservative/Republicans Beware--just AnotherAug 25, 2015Privatization thus replaces public, government-owned, assets, by privately owned assets, and so it transfers control from publicly elected (government) leaders (who are answerable to everyone at ballot-boxes), to private ones — to private stockholders who decide how those assets will be used — regardless of whether the asset happens to be schools, or hospitals, or land, or natural resources, or roads, or whatever. Anything can be privatized. Anything can be run by an elite, by an ‘owner.†...

Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well.
Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes.
