Weight issues

Posted: Mar 25, 2012

Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and just ate whatever I felt like it. I'm talking turtle cheesecake, frozen entrees (Stoufers lasagna), chips and dip, just whatever I felt like eating. Well recently some of the stress has lifted and I have resumed my normal eating habits and I am back to more of a high protien diet and taking in significantly less calories. I noticed a lot of my clothes have gotten significantly tighter and no matter how much my weighted fluctuated over the years, I have always worn the same size. Tonight I finally decided to weigh myself and I'll be darned if I have not only put that 20lbs back on, but another 20 on top of it!!! I am freaking out over here. I have never, ever been obese. I am gonna be 39 in July so the weight just doesn't come off like it use to. I know it is typical to gain in the Winter for most people, but I am 40lbs heavier than what I was 3yrs ago and totally freaking out. I guess this is just a vent. I would like to get a gym membership, but I gotta find some place affordable first. For the past 3wks I have done awsome, I eat high protien breakfast (omlette with green veggies and a little cheese) and I have fresh fruit like blue berries or something for lunch and then later in the day for snack. Urrrgh...it is really weighing on my self-esteem, as I have never been an obese person, and now I feel extremely fat and far gone. HELP!!!;

you WILL never lose the weight the way you did before. They arent' kidding when they talk about "middle age spead." Good luck to you. A healthy livestyle and your own good health is more important than your actual weight. Thin people can be unhealthy. Just be accepting of yourself.

I started water aerobics about 4 years ago. I just knew the pounds were going to fall off because I was basically a couch potato before and sitting at a computer 8 hours a day doesn't help either. Wrong! I really toned up and had more stamina, and could breathe better but the pounds actually went up. I like to think muscle weighs more than fat. I agree with the above poster, to accept yourself as you are. Try to eat better but don't dwell on it.

The scale is never your friend! The healthiest way for your body and mind is to go by how your clothes fit and how you look without clothes in the mirror. The scale can be evil and depressing. I am a former anorexic and have been away from that craziness for 15 years, but it's always lurking. I refuse to be weighed - my chart at the doctors has in big letters across the top DO NOT WEIGH. Stay away from the scale and you will fare much better :)

now. I too have gained weight since becoming a MT (that an life stressors have not helped), however it is in the order of 70 pounds, not 40 (wish it was 40). Two years ago diagnosed as hypothyroid too, so that does not help. My issue it sticking to my diet plan and of course exercise. I get bored and lazy. I want to lose the weight and really need to lose the weight. I have a treadmill right next to my desk here so I have utterly no excuses and every exercise video/DVD known to man (well, slight exaggeration, but I have quite a few). I am not going to accept me as I am now and don't want to stay this way. Do I need a big kick in the butt, yes. I can lose it if I put my mind to it and so can you. You may not be 120 pounds again (my realistic goal is 140, I am 5-3 also though WHEN I do hit 140 I am gonna try like *ell to hit 130 which is what I weighed at 30 when I married, would love to be able to get back in my dress for my 20th anniversary in 4 years). In August I started my "diet" and lost 5 pounds in about 2 weeks, but then got super busy with kids and their school, activities, etc. keep saying I will start again, today in fact I intended to start again, so maybe your post is what I needed to kick myself into gear. I have a trip coming up and want to be about 35 to 45 pounds lighter by then so guess I better get sweating!

But do not give up on yourself. Weather is getting to be super nice, time to go outside and walk for 20 mins, try doing that every day and eventually increase up to an hour, that is what I plan to do. If it is too hot then hop on the treadmill or walk early in the morning or later after dinner at dusk. Walking has always helped me lose weight and maintain, just got lazy and stopped, but it will be a great way to carve out some time for myself and get healthy at the same time. Good luck to us both!

Thank you!! Zorro - Wish I had a treadmill - sitting next to my desk.

I'm like you, 5'1" and have always been kinda heavy, but Jan 2011 I had just had enough, was up to 175 and started a Paleo diet, high protein, more fat, and absolutely no exercise. I cut out grains, rice, sugar, fruit. Was basically eating eggs, meat, non-starchy veggies and lots of coconut oil. I finally cut the dairy in May, and by August 2011, I had lost 35 lbs without exercise. Fast forward to now, I have discovered Dr. Jack Kruse. He advocates a paleo diet, but also cold therapy. I know it sounds really crazy, but I have been doing the ice packs to my belly and cold baths for about a week now and my belly fat is actually disappearing. Now I am 47 and postmenopausal and I thought I would always have a flabby belly, but I have lost 1 pant size in 2 weeks! I'm not kidding. I haven't lost really any more weight since Sep 2011, but I feel good at this weight.

My point is, it does not have to be a struggle. I have done very little exercise and have lost weight. It is very hard to get away from the idea of eating low-fat and artificial sugars and stuff like that, but the artificial sugar is what drives the cravings. By eating the way I do, I am not hungry, NEVER snack, eat 2 meals a day, and am satisfied. I have started to lift some weights, but no cardio.

Check out jackkruse.com and there are lots of paleo recipe blogs for great ideas (nom nom paleo and the clothes make the girl are my favorites, just click on the recipe indexes).

Good luck to you.

Go paleo or primal!!! - Been primal since Feb and 16 pounds down

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm a huge fan of the paleo/primal way of thinking/lifestyle. It's a way of life, not a diet, so there's nothing to "stop."

I'm still on dairy, though. I like milk and greek yogurt too much to give it up at this point, but may consider it again down the line.

I do watch my intake and do some exercise, but not as much exercise as I should/could and I'm down 16 pounds without really trying much.

Get rid of any kind of grain. It works.

I'm definitely checking out that cold therapy stuff, too.

It really does work! - Me

Good to see other Paleo/Primals on this site! I had a hard time wrapping my brain around the idea of being cold. I used to vacation in Vegas in the summer just for the heat. I tried the face dunks a couple of times and it really felt good. I just had to get over the idea of feeling silly, but it does work. The cold makes the fat cells release toxins, estrogen, etc. I got some ice packs at Walmart in the camping section, like bubblewrap, and put that on my stomach for like 20 to 30 mins a day, and sit in the cold tub for 30 to 60 mins. I am not brave enough to put ice in the tub yet, tap is cold enough for now, but it helps to get in first and then put the water. You can read on Dr Kruse's forum about the success stories already or on his facebook page. I'm a big fan. Leptin Rx works wonders too.

Thanks maybe I should consider cutting back on - the fresh fruit - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I try to eat high protien, but I like blueberries (mainly for health reasons) and I had been substituting fresh fruits like grapes and straberries etc. in place of sweets.

Maybe I need to cut back my fruit intake, because fruit is high in carbohydrates and when trying to lose I think you should try to stay within 25 to 40 grams of carbs per day.

suggestions for sweets - - Ayn

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, most fruits are very high in carbs/sugar. Stick with berries and melons for lowest carbs in fruits.

I have found the sugar-free Jell-O a great low/no carb treat for a sweet tooth fix. Also, Anderson-Erickson YoLite yogurt is fairly low-carb. Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream is pretty good. Of course, there are also Atkins bars, which I have found taste pretty good. I especially like the peanut butter cups!

There are many sugar-free or low-sugar/carb options nowadays, you just have to take the time to read the labels. Unfortunately, some of it can get expensive. I'm ready for spring & summer so the farmer's market will come back & I can get fresh veggies, berries, and melons!!!
Shooting yourself in the foot with sugar-free food-like items - Ms. Gluten-Free
[ In Reply To ..]
Artificially sweetened products produce the same insulin response, if not worse, than their sugary counterparts. The same thing results . . . more calories stored as fat. You are not helping yourself one bit with them. There are a lot of studies showing this now. Even a diet coke a day is a problem.

If you crave sweets think about ways to eliminate the craving, not to satisfy it.

I have been gluten and dairy-free since December of 2009. In that time I have gone from 260+ to 221 without dieting or exercising. My lab work is now within normal ranges. My blood pressure dropped. I no longer have itches or dry skin, or joint aches, or abdominal pain, bloating, or diarrhea. My complexion improved. I have almost no migraines. My face is no longer so puffy that I can hardly apply mascara and I no longer look like a hamster storing up for a famine. I buy my clothes off the XL and L rack, not the 2X, and my shoe size is an 8, not a 10.

Here is the interesting part, though. I no longer crave bread, cookies, candy, ice cream, or soft drinks. It only took about 2 weeks to get there, too. If I were to eat a slice of bread, though, I would start thinking I needed to have another about an hour later. Snacking would ensue.

I no longer crave carbohydrates or sweets. I eat when I am downright hungry and that is all I need. If I miss a meal or two, ,it is not a big deal.

Why am I telling you this? Because I think the key is going gluten-free. Dairy-free if you can help it. I can just about promise that your life will be so much improved that you will decide the processed food industry is out to kill us all.

It is not difficult to do and it does not need to be expensive.
I'd agree with you if - - Ayn

IF I was suggesting a diet full of sugar-free, artificially sweetened items, but that was not what I meant at all. My diet is largely protein & fat (meats, cheeses, eggs, nuts, fresh veggies and a very little amount of berries or one of those other sugar-free/low sugar "treats" 2-3 times a week) with around 30-40 gm of carbs a day. (Typical American diet is closer to 300 carbs a day!) I was suggesting the "sweet" items (fruit, sugar-free Jell-O, low-carb yogurt, low-carb ice cream, etc.) as rare treats. Sorry if I was not clear.

I agree with you, though, as I continue on this diet my craving for that sweet flavor has diminished (although I never had a big sweet tooth to begin with). "Dieting" should not be about depriving oneself though or it will never work because the "dieter" will always feel deprived and will eventually go back to his/her old eating habits. To successfully lose weight and keep it off, one has to change their lifestyle and eating habits and way of thinking about food. And they have to find the foods that work for them -- as I said in another post, different people have different success with different "diets" -- low-carb (= high-protein), Paleo, gluten-free, etc -- it is about how your body reacts to carbs, gluten, fat, etc.

It sounds like you have a gluten sensitivity and I'm glad you found the gluten-free diet that has made you feel so much better. I don't know I lot about gluten or what foods it is or isn't in, but it sounds as though your gluten-free diet could also be considered low-carb. The gluten-free is helping all your other conditions, but it is the low-carb that is helping you lose the weight.

Gluten (or calories) is not what the body stores as body fat. The body stores excess carbs/sugar as body fat first, but if you cut out the carbs and increase the protein & dietary fat, you retrain your body and kickstart your metabolism back into what it should be doing - thereby burning off your body fat stores and using protein & dietary fat to fuel your body, rebuild muscle, etc., no longer storing all those excess carbs as more and more weight on your body.

sorry, guess I'm just a Chatty Kathy today.

Everyone probably automatically thinks "potato" when they hear "low-carb diet" -- but if you are watching carbs/sugar -- remember you must watch your intake of ALL of the other starchy veggies to (carrots, corn, beans, etc). Also, how foods are prepared (raw, cooked, etc) can affect how your body processes the carbs, sugars & starches in them.

We all think fruits & veggies are "good for us" - but if you are following low-carb, not all fruits & veggies are created equal and just because it is a natural fruit or veggie doesn't mean it's good for you. Research low-carb, low-starch veggies as well as fruits for a grocery list of the "best" ones for your diet.

Low-carb diets are not just about cutting out the candy, cookies, junk food, bread, pasta, and potatoes.

Another suggestion for a sweet tooth fix (and to help you drink more water and less soda, coffee, juice, etc) are the Crystal Light packets.
Thank you, I forgot all about the sugar-free jello - and you are right about

the fruits. I am going to check into fresh green beans and the carb amount for them. I eat a lot of fresh green beans and brocoli.

What do you think of the sugar-free pudding make with whipping cream? I have heard of low carb eaters having that for a sweet tooth. Only problem is you really gotta be low-carbing it with that because the fat content and calorie content is much higher then the sugar free jello.

thanks again for all the suggestions!

No need to count calories or fat - Me
[ In Reply To ..]
When I lost the 35 pounds last year, I did not count calories or fat, or even carbs for that matter. The only thing that mattered was the timing of the meals. Eat a high-protein, high-fat meal within 30 minutes of rising, small lunch and maybe medium-sized dinner based on hunger at least 3 hours before bed and no snacking after dinner (like I said above, I stopped snacking because I am not hungry between meals, as long as I eat enough protein and fat). Very low carb for me, above poster was right about the carbs in veggies. When you look at green veggies, 1 cup of brocolli has 4 gm. I would have to eat a whole lot of green veggies to get to 50 gm. I just look at veggies as something to put fat on.

For my sweet tooth, I use liquid stevia, get the kind without alcohol. I melt some coconut oil and let it cool a bit, then add cocoa powder and some stevia and freeze it to make bark, or put it in the frig and let it harden a little bit and make cocoa balls, yum. Also use coconut milk and add cocoa powder and stevia to make hot chocolate. If you can add nuts or shredded coconut to the cocoa balls and they are like Almond joy.

I would stay away from fat-free and sugar-free stuff. I have found that when I get cravings, my body needs more fat. I know its hard to get used to the idea, but your body can burn fat instead of carbs and sugar. It's just so used to being fueled by sugar, it takes time to convert to being a fat burner.

Weight Watchers - LinK

[ In Reply To ..]
I swear by Weight Watchers. The best thing I ever did was join the first of the year. I've lost 15 pounds and have another 10-15 to go. I love it because I can eat whatever I want as long as I don't go over my points for the week. I love sweets and I can eat ice cream and cookies, just not as many or as much as I used to. I go to the meetings and I find that that helps a lot because then I'm accountable for my weight loss. I hate to be weighed and find out I didn't lose as much as I wanted. It makes me work harder. I also started walking for 15-30 minutes every day. Oh, and I'll be 50 in two months and never thought I'd be able to lose weight.

More suggestions - Ayn

[ In Reply To ..]
It sounds like you are doing the right thing by realizing what you need to do, that you are motivated, and that you have made a good start with improving your eating habits. Try not to get discouraged -- the weight does come off slower as we age, and we never look at 40 like we did at 20.

Keep in mind that weight is just a number and the more important thing is your health, your self-esteem, and how you look & feel. Muscle DOES weigh more than fat, so keep that in mind as you watch the scales. (For example, I have only lost 1 pound this entire month, but I have dropped another pants size.) I suggest not only tracking your weight, but your measurements as a way to encourage yourself and see the results. I keep a calendar on which I log my daily exercise, my weight on the 15th and the last day of the month, and my measurements -- it motivates me to keep it up (I hate to see a day with a big X when I don't exercise) and it encourages me to see that I am making progress on the days when I feel discouraged. I also set a monthly goal for myself and write it at the bottom of the calender.

Set reasonable goals for yourself. The weight did not come on over a month or two, and it will certainly take longer to come off than it did to come on.

I would suggest you also see a doctor to have initial lab & a discussion just to make sure there are no other factors affecting your weight and that a new diet/exercise routine is safe. It will also then motivate you to go back in 6 months or whatever the doc suggests and see the improvement in not only your weight but your BP, heart rate, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc.

I highly recommend the book "Why We Get Fat: And What to Do About It" by Gary Taubes. I strongly agree with the above poster who suggested cutting out sugars. For me, a low-carb diet has been very successful in combination with exercise (not only for weight loss, but for overall improved health, increased energy, etc.). Since September 2011 I have lost 27 pounds, dropping over 20 inches and going from a tight size 8 jeans to the size 4 denim shorts that I bought this weekend! (and I'll be 45 in a few months) I am running and doing increasingly more and more strength training (working more on toning/strengthening now than weight loss), but I think a good daily walking program would work as well for anyone starting out and then just take the exercise as far as you want. Not everyone enjoys running or lifting weights!

You do not have to have a gym membership to exercise -- buy a few inexpensive hand weights and/or ankle weights, buy a stability ball (around $15 at Walmart - comes with a DVD & chart of exercises), buy a jumprope, check out the used video stores for used workout DVDs, walk outside (or in the mall or at a closeby office building if you think they won't mind - stairwells!), Google exercises that don't even require weights (many floor exercises, Pilates, etc.) -- Start slow and add equipment as you like or can afford. This is a good time of year also to find equipment at garage sales if you are interested in a treadmill, stationary bike, etc.

The important thing is to find what works for you (and it may take some experimenting with different things) -- as far as exercise and as far as diet. Some people do better on low-carb diets, some do better on Paleo, some find WeightWatchers helpful, etc. The important thing is to find what works for you and what you can stick to and maintain as a lifestyle change - not a diet to go off of as soon as you hit your goal weight. It has to be a lifestyle change, you have to do it for yourself and not others, and you have to commit to it.

Good luck!!

Thanks everyone, I appreciate all the - great replies!!

I went to a weight loss doctor and got advice. - I have lost 140#.

He said that first and foremost, I needed to exercise more. I took up kickboxing. Tons of fun and a TOUGH cardio workout. I never knew that I could do hundreds of pushups and situps and planks and arm circles and sprawls and jump squats, but I can and it feels fantastic.

The second thing he said was to eat a lot of protein. Yes, we should limit sugar and fat, but he said that the best way to really do that is to eat a lot of protein. Protein shakes are my friend. I like the GNC vanilla whey powder. I mix it with either some frozen fruit and some water for a really good smoothy, or when I was really trying to lose fast, I would mix it with water, ice and sugar free koolaid of some sort. I prefer orange flavored. If you add the fruit, of course you add sugar.

Try to break your eating up into 5 small meals. If you are not doing a protein shake, always eat protein (lean meats) first, then green veggies, then starches. The thought is that maybe by the time you get to the starches, you won't really want them.

Stop drinking soda. Any soda, even diet.

Finally, he said not to buy into the protein shots. They taste like crap and your body cannot process that much protein at once, anyway, so you drink something nasty that was expensive for nothing.

It's hard to lose weight, but has been so worth it for me. Good luck!

Now, I saw on TV the other day about how protein shakes can either help you lose weight or maintain weight. I am so in need of losing some weight. Have others here tried? ...

Weight Loss ShakesMay 13, 2015
Years ago I lost quite a bit of weight by substituting a weight loss shake for my lunch every day - now, going through menopause, I was looking at Slim Fast, but it is pure sugar so I was wondering if anybody knew of one that is made up of something more natural.  I like the powder to mix with milk rather than the premade ones - they are too expensive for me.   Anybody have a suggestion? ...

Has Anyone Here Lost Weight With The AssistanceNov 08, 2015
Being as my thyroid is no longer functioning and my feet are just another thing, my doctor suggested a stationary bike to assist in weight loss. Never having had one, thought I would ask here if others had used and it helped. ...

New Weight Watchers Point Plus ProgramMar 10, 2011
Just started, seems WAAAY different from old program.  Anyone doing this and what is your opinion on the program.  Also, a little ticked off they do not have any calculators to figure your food with.  That alone is a problem.  There is a calculator on line though if you have access to it. ...

Controversy Over Dr.s Remarks About Patient's WeightNov 21, 2009
My husband told me he read somewhere on the Internet about an ophthalmologist telling an extremely obese patient that he was refusing to do her eye exam since she was going to lose her sight anyway because of her uncontrolled (apparently she's been noncompliant with her diabetic care) diabetes and obesity.  He told her she was obese and had better ose some weight What are your thoughts? He's just a jerk. He cares about his patients and knows her obesity is going to kill he ...

Has Hillary Gained Weight? Just Saw A ClipApr 25, 2016
She had on her typical pants suit with a big top down to her knees but it was not hiding the weight gain through her waist.  She has enough going on with FBI and e-mails without gaining excessive weight.   Not good for her health or looking presidential.  ...

Red Eyes, Weight Loss - HyperthyroidismMar 06, 2016
I'm catching up on medical problems after being without insurance for years.  For the past year I have had weight loss, red eyes and a fine tremor at times.  TSH was normal but T3 & T4 were very high.  I'd been hypothyroid most of my life (35 years), now diagnosed with hyperthyroidism & Grave's disease.  Had thyroid uptake 24 hour scan.  The endocrinologist said that in 18 years of practice, the highest thyroid uptake he had seen was 60% in a patie ...

Popular Effective Weight Reduction ProgramJan 03, 2017
ruined by acquisition by arrogant mogul.  If there is any person who should NOT be trying to sell us a weight loss system, it is Orpha Mowfrey.  She has failed, failed, failed, failed.  I believe that is the # of highly publicized "successful" diets she has been on.  A bit like the Most Interesting Man In the World buying an AA franchise.  I do not purchase ANYTHING that has a celebrity brand - White haired lady racist's skillets and mixing bowls, blonde bimbo& ...

Men Who Comment On Women's Weight Have A Tendency For Early MortalitySep 28, 2016
The OP subject is an old joke on social media, but it is not a joke when you are the subject on comments such as what Trump has made about women.   I think most women understand the insecurity about their bodies that gets instilled in us as children.   If you don't understand, there are all kinds of psychological articles available on the subject.   Definitely not someone who should be president.   ...

Bladder IssuesMar 06, 2011
I had a hysterectomy about eleven years ago.  Since that time, I have had a lot of UTI\\\\\\\'s.  I would assume it is because I have a prolapsed bladder or cystocele.  I am seeing a Urologist on Thursday and I was wondering if he was going to recommend a sling procedure.  Has anyone had this done, and are you happy with it?  ...

Skin IssuesFeb 23, 2011
Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...
