Sinus/Allergy issues

Posted: Apr 27, 2014

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?  I have never, ever had any type of issues with sinus problems or allergy problems.  Back in October, I got sick and was living in a house with probably some mold and other allergens.  I got extremely sick and stayed that way for a couple of months.  Since then I have had a stuffy nose, unable to smell, limited taste and a stopped up ear, so that has been SEVEN months now!  I don't have insurance, so the only doctor I can afford is the urgent care and they don't really know why I can't get over that and they just call it allergies.  I have never previously had any type of allergy problems, so would it start at age 39?  I have tried Claritin, Flonase, Zyrtec and none have helped in the slightest.

This may help - Nasal Rinse

Made with some plain salt or sea salt. You can buy pre made or make your own. Try 2 sniffs in each nostril twice a day. Use a nasal spray bottle or just mix some in a glass and put a little in your hand and sniff it up a couple times in each nose. Leave in as long as you can and then blow it out. This is what a doctor told me many years ago and it does help me. Beta carotene and vitamin C help also with some allergy medicine. Hope you feel better.

I do the nasal rinse, but I actually do nasal irrigation - see msg

I use a bulb syringe, tilt my head back slightly and totally empty the solution into my nostril. It will either come out the other nostril or the back of your throat & just spit it out. Then you do the other nostril the same way.

You can buy nasal irrigation kits at Walmart, Kmart, CVS, Walgreen's etc. They come with the little gadget or syringe thing (not sure what to call it). I just buy the solution and use my own syringe. You can use regular salt water too.

It's very soothing to inflamed sinuses, letting the warm solution rinse through the nasal cavities. I highly reccomend for anyone with sinus problems.

Another thing is organic (or pure) lavender oil & a heating pad. Rub it on the forehead or areas where you are having sinus pain, like your nose and just lay back with the heating pad over your face. That will take away the sinus headache & works really well too.

Try getting off all dairy, be sure, tho, to read ingredients in manufactured food, as even non-dairy stuff has dairy in it (N-D creamer contains casein or caseinate in it, the most prominent protein in dairy and the one that causes most allergy problems). Remember, too, cheese and ice cream, etc., are concentrated dairy so will probably cause even more allergy problems. If I have a little cheese now and then, I get sinus problems. I like to use Advil Cold and Sinus (which one has to get behind the counter due to laws passed as a result of that product being used to make meth). You can get Walgreen's version for a better price, and it works just as well). It sounds as tho you have compromised you immune system. Check out the Hallelujah Diet at www.hacres.com, and also check out the problems with dairy at www.notdairy.com and read up...esp. about the Hallelujah Diet. The guy who started the program cured his colon cancer on this program. It's quite a change from how most of us were raised to eat, so to speak...but it works! Read the testimonials. I am not affiliated with the H-Diet people and get no benefit for "promoting" it. Just glad I found out about it and want others to discover it, too. The most important part of the diet, I believe, is the power of carrot juice (made fresh with your own juicer...note JUICER, not blender, etc.) Good luck!

I use saline spray - see msg

I just use saline spray, OTC. It flushes allergens out of your nose. I spray 2 times in each nostril, sniff up a tiny bit, then wait a moment until I know it's in good. Then I give my nose a good blow to flush out the allergens---but don't blow too hard, that can inflame the sinuses.

I use it even when I don't feel the allergies--kind of a preventive maintenance. For sure I make sure to use it if my nose is dry. A dry nose is a haven for allergens sticking to the passages. The spray gets things all nice and juiced up, then flushed out.

One can get rebound effect from allergy meds, particularly medicated nasal spray, so proceed with caution always there.

If you snore, that can also inflame things and dry things out.

I know how it feels - ME

Something similar happened to me when I was in my early 40s. I've often wondered if it was my hormones/perimenopause. I remember having a bad sinus infection, 3 weeks of antibiotics and never recovered. I am 50 now, no insurance and I have tried everything imaginable, herbal remedies, Neti pots, OTC's. Nothing really worked, only Claritin-D, but I can't stand the stimulants. My nasal passages are just swollen.

A couple of years ago, I changed my diet, similar to what one of the above posters said. I eliminated wheat, dairy, soy, nuts, and vinegar. Those are the things that I am sensitive to. As long as I avoid these, I can breathe better, not completely clear, but better. If I eat anything I'm sensitive to, my nose is stuffy all night and I have trouble breathing. It's like I can only breathe through 1 side of my nose, the one that's on top since I'm a side sleeper. If I turn to the other side, the fluid in the tissues goes to the bottom and that side of my nose is plugged. Without more tests, CTs, nasal endoscopy, that's the best I can do, just keep my diet clean. I eat meat, veggies, avocados, eggs, fruit and that's about it. I avoid chicken, don't know what's in it, they feed the chickens soy and corn, or the meat itself is treated with broth that contains wheat. I also avoid corn as that gives me hives. Not an easy thing, but without insurance, that's the only thing I've found that helps. It could be a mold allergy, but it started before I moved here, so I'm not sure. Anyway, good luck to you,

Bladder IssuesMar 06, 2011
I had a hysterectomy about eleven years ago.  Since that time, I have had a lot of UTI\\\\\\\'s.  I would assume it is because I have a prolapsed bladder or cystocele.  I am seeing a Urologist on Thursday and I was wondering if he was going to recommend a sling procedure.  Has anyone had this done, and are you happy with it?  ...

Skin IssuesFeb 23, 2011
Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...

Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012
Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and jus ...

Not My Kid, But Got Teenage IssuesAug 24, 2010
A very dear friend of my husband and I has gone off the deep end over the past year or more.  He is a full-blown cocaine/crack addict and his family has all but disowned him.  He pretty much does what he wants and is not anywhere near the point where he feels like he needs help. He has kicked his wife and her 15 year old daughter out of the house several times during his path of self destruction.  Most recent was this past weekend AFTER he took almost everything in their ...

Let's Talk Issues....smAug 01, 2012
Since it has been brought up that libs supposedly don't want to talk issues, let's do just that... Issue 1: Foreign policy: What exactly is it that Romney would do different from Obama in the middle east? Issue 2: Besides trying to kill Obamacare and therefore healthcare for tons of people, as well as lowering taxes for the rich, what is it exactly that Romney would do to improve the economy? I'm assuming pubs have the answers to these questions as they are so sure that Romn ...

Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014
I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes. This morning his eyes again (after not giving him the Vitamin C, switching out for L-Lysine) were looking a little worse. Would it be any problem to give him both the Lysine and the Vitamin C? Thanks my fellow catfolks! ...

Fertility IssuesOct 14, 2016
My daughter has been unble to get pregnant since she had a miscarriage 8 years ago.  She found out her right tube is completely blocked.  She wants a baby so much, and she would make a wonderful mother.  All of her friends are working on their 3rd or 4th ones now, and she cannot bring herself to go to baby showers anymore.  I encouraged her to look at foster care, since adopting a baby is expensive and takes forever.  I am reaching out to my peeps on this board to see if ...

NEIGHBOR ISSUESAug 22, 2015
There are 3 families with young children who live next to me.  My children are grown and gone.  All of the children like to come to my house, probably because I don't have to discipline them, I'm like a grandmother. I enjoy having all of the children at my house - I miss having children around.  I have never had this problem before and I'm not ...

Husband Issues-Part 2Nov 05, 2014

Have A Question About End Of Life IssuesFeb 06, 2015
I know it makes no difference what a person wants in their directives, the family can and does sometimes want something else but I want to talk about vent care, life support. Okay, so if a person is at end of life and has no directives, the doctor says to the next of kin you have to make a decision, this person is gone. I know you cannot live like forever on life support, not like you are living but remain on life support is what I mean. What if the family says no, absolutely not and refuses to ...

Female Felines With Anal Issues?Oct 21, 2012
I have had my male cat's anal gland expressed before but this morning noticed a very obnoxious odor from the female, very similar and thinking it is the same as the male. Has anyone else had female who had a similar problem? I am taking her plus the other 2 males in the home tomorrow to have all done, if that is the issue. I am feeling perhaps late in having this done and feeling bad that perhaps I missed but then again did not consider perhaps it happening to the female population. Has any ...
