Should this board be for political AND social issues?

Unofficially at best, and a political context for large - social issues, has to be created. I sm

see many very interesting articles on trends that affect us, are often changing the entire nation, but don't post them because they're not political.
You ought to try posting one of them and see - grits

if a good discussion comes of it. The sticky thread says this board is lightly moderated, which I've always taken to mean the mods don't intervene until/unless there's a complaint.
I'd think "politics" is a broad spectrum and goes hand-in-hand with social issues. We see thread drift into social topics as it is now, and it's interesting.
sometime the moderators don't understand - for example

Recently a post on the dust bowl documentary by PBS was moved to the gab board. Apparently there was no understanding of the political implications of the dust bowl, FDR, the great depression and the "new deal". I guess if you do not have a historical, political, literary background (as in the Grapes of Wrath, scientific (as in agriculture and climate change) you would not understand the political relationship, as well as the fact that the documentary was on PBS, which is a Republican whipping program.
Good luck to you.
And wasn't the Gab Board surprised. :) Grits, I have - The post on Mattel changing Barbie to less of

a bimbo because more fathers are involved in gift choices, and also redesigning their stores to appeal more to men. I was bored with the same-old over the "cliff" filling the screen and thought the big issues reflected in this article might be of interest.
The Dust Bowl was a better one posted by someone else--and very current given the climate changes on the Great Plains. The new disaster blowing up out there is huge, but politics is the least of it.
I've done others that were easier to "politicize" by just attaching a political dependent clause or some such thing; but I really think politics is too limiting to discussion and hate to have to "turn" discussion that way.
Politics is just one way we try to handle the big things that are occurring in our world. The rest of the story is usually a lot more interesting. We could go discuss demographic changes and economic philosophies on the Gab Board, but then where do people go to talk about their MIL's horrible taste in Christmas gifts and their sick dog's unfortunate accidents? Or whatever. :)
I agree with you there. - grits

I feel like Gab is more for lighthearted topics, whereas social issues might go over like a lead balloon. Why bring the party down when this board is already primed for weightier topics, KWIM?
I might email a mod and ask about this later - grits

because I'm most active on this board, and I think the discussions about that sort of thing would be more robust here than on other boards (I could be wrong).
I know the audience here, which may be a totally different group than those who stick mainly to Gab or Humor, for instance.

misunderstood your post you do have the option to email her and explain. I have had success doing this in the past. It is not an easy job to moderate this board fairly.
Oh, me too. She was not mistaken, though, in taking the Dust Bowl - off Politics, and that's the point.
[ In Reply To ..]
It wasn't political, but it hit the Gab Board like some bore wanting to discuss the Dust Bowl at a pool party. Huh? :)
Apolitical or otherwise, it fit best here--as Grits says, where people come for fairly heavy discussion about the world. So...maybe broadening the forum to discussion about significant local, national and international issues beyond just their political aspects? Seems a natch to me, just keep "politics" right up front in the name so people have fair warning. :)
So the Great depression, the new deal and climate change - are not political? sm

between politics and news information that is not politically related. Like when I moved the message about a shooting to the gab board and I got it on that one. I always welcomed emails or even just messages from people explaining why they believed something should have remained on the board. You are right, we are not perfect and we make mistakes or sometimes just have to make a judgement call. Like when I moved the post where someone prayed, even though it was about politics, it had a prayer so I made the judgement to move it.
You are right it is not an easy job and one I'm glad I do not have anymore. I caught it from all sides. It was becoming depressing coming to the board and having to read every message and try to stop the bickering. Nobody thought I was fair to them. Everyone wanted to call the other side names and have their posts remain but the other ones removed. And I got that oh so lovely email from "Frank" after I removed his post telling me in plain English what I should do to his male private part as he was calling me a "retard". That was one of those shockers that someone would actually write that, but then I just busted up laughing. But he felt one message like that was not enough. He kept sending me messages like that.
One job I'm glad I don't have anymore. Especially since I didn't get paid for it. :-)
Oy. We really don't know what goes on behind the scenes, do we? - grits

[ In Reply To ..]
I let her know I'd be quoting her, btw.
"I don't see a problem discussing social issues on the politics board - more and more these days, they seem to run hand in hand. Historical issues are also welcomed to be discussed, this country or others, as long as that is what is being discussed (as in the Dust Bowl series - no one was discussing the impact, just the producer). I will caution you, though, that social issues can be even more emotionally charged than politics and therefore is ripe for personal attacks. Moderation is supposed to be kept to a minimum to allow for more open discussion, so please try to keep an open mind and if necessary, I will advise others to do the same. As long as everyone can keep it civil, we should have some good discussions and I won't have much to do :)"
So yay! I love this, and as y'all know, I keep flame-proof drawers on at all times. :D
I don't understand the difference - sm

Aren't all political issues based on social/economic issues?
I guess the difference is - grits

that there has to be a political element to the discussion. Take her example of the Dust Bowl program - a bunch of us veered off into talking about Ken Burns, so it got moved as it was more of an entertainment thread at that point.
Had we stuck to the program itself, which I imagine examined the political and social ramifications of the Dust Bowl, it would have been fine to stay here. It's sort of like "I know it when I see it." I think we're fine to start any social issue topic we want, but we need to try to keep it more or less on the relevant track. I guess some drift is okay, but not the entire thread.
your're kind, grits - arroz

conversations frequently veer off on tangents; rarely is the entire thread moved as a result. No harm was perpetrated when a spontaneous conversation erupted regarding the virtues of Ken Burns.

Most elsewhere, but some right here in the U.S. and more to come. We could talk about that all day long and never mention politics.

It is not a site to share your hobbies whether it be scrapbooking or gardening or whatever other hobbies you enjoy. That is why there is a Gab Board. Changing The Social Paradigm Without Political OppressionOct 04, 2012Seeing the constant, raging debate in this country day after day I've been thinking a lot about the futility of political change. True change in the system of politics is both unlikely to happen and potentially ineffective even if it did. The problem as I see it is that the American culture is now one of endemic greed. My observation of the rich is that - despite their behavior as soulless, heartless sociopaths - they appear to be identical to poor people, except that they ...
Messages On The Political BoardMar 27, 2012Reading through the posts I would like to ask everyone again to please stick to issues and discuss politics and leave out the name calling and insulting. The posts are getting personal again.

I'm Not Sure I Can Handle A Political Board, LOLApr 21, 2011I always enjoy dropping by here for a break, between tasks. I'm learning that I get cranky about politics. Obviously I need an outlet from stressful work, but I'm just not sure I can handle politics. I'm never cranky around people that I see in person. Why is it so hard to do on forums! I admire those who are able to be statesmanish, even on forums such as this. That is a goal I am setting for myself. ...

A Few Thoughts About The Political Discourse On This BoardJun 30, 20151. Pigeonholes, prejudices and labels: It's the natural tendency of the human mind to simplify reality. This is an adaptive mechanism by which we seek to make sense of a world that is overwhelmingly complex and constantly changing. Even our physical sensory organs (and their respective brain centers) are designed in a way to filter OUT the vast majority of the millions of bits of sensory data that impinge on us constantly. If not, we'd be so inundated with ...
