Hypothyroidism and skin issues

Posted: Apr 9, 2011

I have hypothyroidism, but not taking any medications.  Part of my problem is my face and skin.  Under my eyes is always flaky (like psoriasis) and I've got pimples that are breaking out all over my face, but they are not like the pimples of my youth (without getting gross about how I used to get rid of them), now when I try to pop them nothing happens and they get bigger and redder and they hurt.  The skin on my face is normal but my forehead is normal to oily and the areas around my mouth and chin are dry/flaky and my eyebrows are flaky and looks like I have dandruff in my eyebrows.  I wash with Aveeno and use the moisturizer.  Everything looks nice for about 20 or 30 minutes and then it's back like before.  I don't wear makeup so not getting clogged up.  Does anyone have similar issues and what do you do (use).  I've been reading about epsom salts for skin care.  Does anyone use epsom salts for skin care and if so how does it do.  Looking for something that I can finally get a good balance on my skin.  I'm turning 51 in a couple weeks and just feeling like I look well past my age.  I would just like to have nice clear smooth skin.  Hope this makes sense.  It's late and was just getting ready to shut down.  Look forward to anyone's replies.

I have had hypothyroidism since I was a teen. May I ask why you don't take medication? It is most important you take medication for this condition, it will make you feel so much better emotionally and physically. I take brand-name Synthroid and it costs me $25 a month. I don't take the generic but there is one available and it costs much less.

I'm a year older than you and have much the same skin problems. My doctor told me I have rosacea. I went thru a period where my Synthroid was the wrong dose and it got worse and now I have my medication in balance and the painful lumps are gone, but my face still gets red a lot.

But please, please, get yourself to a doctor and get some thyroid medication. Believe me it'll change your whole outlook for the better!

Please, please do as mb suggested and get some medication. I have had hypothyroidism for 10+ years. I take the generic, levothyroxine, and it costs me $5 for a 90-day supply through my insurance. I went for years undiagnosed, I think, and was truly amazed at how much better I felt once I got on the medication. Trust us on this! Get thee to a doctor!!

thanks mb & Justine - just me

Taking medications for me is a personal issue. I have been taking vitamins for underactive thyroid, but I just won't take prescription medications. It's just me and I won't do it. My other issues is what I'm trying to deal with right now. Thanks for your replies.

Vitamins won't help your thyroid.....sm - mb

I understand your reluctance to take prescription medications. Synthroid is a synthetic hormone and it has no side effects, its sole purpose is to restore the thyroid hormone your body lacks.

Please google "myxedema coma" and you will learn the worst outcome of untreated hypothyroidism. We don't want this to happen to you!
Thanks, that website really helped - just me - sm

There was good information, which I find I have all the symptoms except two. I will go back to the doc and get blood tests and medication. Also good to know about Synthroid. It will give me more options to look at.

Thanks for posting. Now I've still got to figure out until all that happens what I can do for my skin so I don't look "diseased" when I go out.

Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...

Severe Dry Skin....Jan 24, 2011

Help With Skin Issue, PleaseJul 26, 2011
I've never had this before, but on my forehead and spreading to a small part of my cheek, near my mouth and on one side of my nose I've developed seborrheic keratosis.  My PCP told me to use a very mild cleanser and hydrocortisone cream x3 daily, but it really doesn't seem to be helping much.  The spots get warm to the touch and itchy and are really getting more and more difficult to cover when I have to go out. Has anyone else had this and found something a bit more he ...

so this morning i exfoliated my face as per my usual routine, but now my face feels so irritated and itchy. i'm not sure if it is from the exfoliant or what but i'm really uncomfortable here. What Phrases Just Get Under Your Skin?Oct 26, 2013

Skin Tag AdviceMar 24, 2015
Have a skin tag located on my neck.  It was red and inflammed looking for the last couple of weeks.  This a.m. it has turned white and is just hanging on by a thin thread.  Collar of my shirt(s) keep rubbing against it.  Friend told me to pull it off.  I don't think I can do that.  Put a band-aid over it.  Hesitant to pull it off as I am a diabetic.   Don't have an extra money to go to a doctor.  Anybody else have tihs experi ...

Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...

Question About Rx Skin ProductNov 30, 2011
I was complaining to my doc about fine lines, crow's feet/smiles lines, and the beginnings of those "marionette" lines (nasolabial fold area) and was inquiring about botox or a filler.  He told me I wasn't ready for that yet and instead prescribed Retin A gel.  He said faithful use of this, starting judiciously and then increasing, would provide visible reduction in about 8-12 weeks.  I've heard that Retin A (even the microgel) can be really harsh on the skin ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

What Skin Products Do You Ladies Use?Feb 04, 2013
I have older (40) skin that is acne prone. I'm looking for a skin product that doesn't over dry as acne products can sometimes do because my skin is older and now wrinkle prone too. I use neutrogena moisturizer, aveeno dry skin oatmeal bar, and retin A. I only wear foundation maybe once or twice a week (neutrogena). I know it's the products that are causing me to break out because I used to use Rhonda Allison and didn't break out, my skin looked great, however, Rhonda All ...

The Skin Rash That Refuses To DieApr 16, 2016
Anyone got good skin rash remedies?  I've had a rash on my left forearm for several YEARS.... it waxes and wanes, but is always dry and plaque-like.  Very similar to psoriasis, but my arthritis is osteo, not inflammatory, so I'm pretty sure it's just some form of eczema.  It's sometimes dry and scaly, sometimes weepy (especially when I scratch too much) and has become scarred as a result. I've tried everything:  Cortisone creams, dry skin creams, ant ...

Ever Have Your Skin Feel Hot And Dry Like Getting A Sunburn, But You Have Been Indoors All DayAug 12, 2010
Ok, this is weird.  Never had this feeling before, but I am getting up in years, so maybe it is just old age taking it toll.    I am sitting in my living room, lights off, 3 fans going.  We are in the middle of a heat-wave. Over 90 degrees outside, heat index over 100, humidity unbelievable.  I live in an old house with old wiring.  We tried window air conditioners, but could only use 1 at a time and only for a certain number of hours before it started blowing fus ...

Okay Ladies, What Kind Of Skin Care Regimen Do You Use?Sep 29, 2011
I looking for a new skin care regimen.  I'm 44 and have a round, chubby face which I used to hate, but now realize it has prevented me from getting a lot of wrinkles.  I have a few fine lines around my eyes and those parentheses around my mouth, if you know what I mean.  I'm looking for something to prevent future wrinkles and to work on what I have.  I have freckles and have sun damaged my skin when I was younger, so my skin is blotchy without makeup. What Are Some Of Your Favorite Hair/skin/makeup Products?Mar 20, 2012
Right now I am really loving Renpure's hair products.  I've been using their shampoo and conditioner (and have gotten 3 compliments on the health of my hair), but only just recently tried their Argan oil treatment.  LOVE. Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012
Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and jus ...

Not My Kid, But Got Teenage IssuesAug 24, 2010
A very dear friend of my husband and I has gone off the deep end over the past year or more.  He is a full-blown cocaine/crack addict and his family has all but disowned him.  He pretty much does what he wants and is not anywhere near the point where he feels like he needs help. He has kicked his wife and her 15 year old daughter out of the house several times during his path of self destruction.  Most recent was this past weekend AFTER he took almost everything in their ...

Let's Talk Issues....smAug 01, 2012
Since it has been brought up that libs supposedly don't want to talk issues, let's do just that... Issue 1: Foreign policy: What exactly is it that Romney would do different from Obama in the middle east? Issue 2: Besides trying to kill Obamacare and therefore healthcare for tons of people, as well as lowering taxes for the rich, what is it exactly that Romney would do to improve the economy? I'm assuming pubs have the answers to these questions as they are so sure that Romn ...

Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014
I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes. This morning his eyes again (after not giving him the Vitamin C, switching out for L-Lysine) were looking a little worse. Would it be any problem to give him both the Lysine and the Vitamin C? Thanks my fellow catfolks! ...

Fertility IssuesOct 14, 2016
My daughter has been unble to get pregnant since she had a miscarriage 8 years ago.  She found out her right tube is completely blocked.  She wants a baby so much, and she would make a wonderful mother.  All of her friends are working on their 3rd or 4th ones now, and she cannot bring herself to go to baby showers anymore.  I encouraged her to look at foster care, since adopting a baby is expensive and takes forever.  I am reaching out to my peeps on this board to see if ...

NEIGHBOR ISSUESAug 22, 2015
There are 3 families with young children who live next to me.  My children are grown and gone.  All of the children like to come to my house, probably because I don't have to discipline them, I'm like a grandmother. Anyway, I will label them family A, B and C.  Family A is no longer allowed to play with family B or C - long story. I enjoy having all of the children at my house - I miss having children around.  I have never had this problem before and I'm not ...

Need To Talk About Mental IssuesApr 27, 2011

Feet Issues- For YearsAug 22, 2013
I have no idea where to go to get some help for myself. I have tried every single speciality that I thought perhaps could help but this has been going on for over 10 years now and no help. My left foot used to have electrical current that would hit, only when walking, never at night. That elect ...

Sinus/Allergy IssuesApr 27, 2014
