Some of the best news I've read in a long time...

~~~~
THE GIST
- Contrary to popular belief, people generally do not become more conservative as they age.
- Seniors often describe themselves as being more tolerant and more open to new ideas in their old age.
- What's happening in society when people come of age often greatly influences the set point for their core beliefs.
Amidst the bipartisan banter of election season, there persists an enduring belief that people get more conservative as they age -- making older people more likely to vote for Republican candidates.
Ongoing research, however, fails to back up the stereotype. While there is some evidence that today's seniors may be more conservative than today's youth, that's not because older folks are more conservative than they use to be. Instead, our modern elders likely came of age at a time when the political situation favored more conservative views.
In fact, studies show that people may actually get more liberal over time when it comes to certain kinds of beliefs. That suggests that we are not pre-determined to get stodgy, set in our ways or otherwise more inflexible in our retirement years.
Contrary to popular belief, old age can be an open-minded and enlightening time. ....
From a copy of the article before it somehow got clipped out on the original site:
"As young people gained power, they gave the nation a refreshing sense of freedom and progress. By the turn of the 20th century, people had come to see old age as a social problem. In many ways, we have yet to overcome that stereotype.
Today, the image is ubiquitous in popular culture...."
You're quoting an article from Emily Sohn? - Really?
[ In Reply To ..]
Emily Sohn - Her biography states "I've paddled down the Peruvian Amazon, biked through Turkey, and SCUBA-dived into Cuba, all to tell stories about the world's animals" Do pray tell just what political experience does she have? None in anything she's written.
Now, as for this supposed "research". What research? I find no "research" in searching for their "research". So, going to have to go with there was none.
On top of that in researching more in Google there are only 4 links talking abut this and they all copy each other word for word (the same article you posted), but yet no links or anything to back up their claims of "research". In fact I found numerous articles stating that people tend to become more conservative as they grow older. One of the articles had this saying, which pretty much sums it up - "Show me a young Conservative and I'll show you someone with no heart. Show me an old Liberal and I'll show you someone with no brains." Often attributed to Winston Churchill. I know quite a few people that prove that statement correct.
But maybe Miss Sohn should stick to writing articles at what she is best at - history of cheerleading, Restroom poster spur hand washing in men, A long walk down the Amazon, etc. Those are more her speed and she should just leave the political articles to people who are experienced. Otherwise, just looks like she plagiarized other people's writings and no proof to back it up.
Really. She's a *science/environmental* writer for Discovery, not a political writer. - a lib
Which is what the article is about, a scientific study. Some footnoting/citations would have been nice, admittedly, but apparently that's not done on the Discovery News site (and I really wasn't looking around then for a more "reputable" source, since Discovery is great by me).  Horrible Emily:  http://news.discovery.com/contributors/emily-sohn.htm ; http://www.tidepoolsinc.com/pdf/EmilySohn_Resume.pdf
Maybe you could get the hint that they were Obama supporters - since they were at an Obama support "meeting&
[ In Reply To ..]
and most of them were wearing Obama/Biden 2012 T-shirts? Does that tell you anything?
I know, I know...(raising hand) - It is Bush's fault - they are uninformed.
[ In Reply To ..]
Jeepers peepers - they really don't get it do they. Loved the one who tried to make this a racist issue. LOL. Yup, talking about uninformed.
I'm sorry, but this kind of "discussion" - is pointless and causes bickering
[ In Reply To ..]
Should I bring over you tube videos of ************** for everyone to point and laugh at? Because we know there are plenty.
But I really don't see the point.
No it isn't - if you are going to go down that road - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
First, there is a point. That Obama supporters are not well informed about important issues.
Second, the only ones it causes "bickering" with is the libs that don't want to hear it and try to disprove it, all while cutting down republicans.
Third, ************** for bringing race into an issue that has nothing to do with race. It has everything to do with uninformed supporters.
Fourth, if you are going to go down that road then every single post a lib posts here we will post the same reply "this discussion is pointless".
No, you don't see the point and never will.
I hope you were wearing a seatbelt during all that careening - sm
Riiiight... - There are idiots on both sides.
So yes, pointing them all out *is* pointless.
See the same old ridiculous comments by the same clueless, uneducated Libs still show up on this board...they trip over themselves to post right after they call each other on their Obama phones, cash their welfare checks, and buy their steak and lobster with their food stamps.  They are still too stupid to figure out that because they voted for the Communist does not mean they get a break from the hell that is about to enfold.  Okay, all you little communists that hide behind your litt ...
A Very Informed Article By Sharyl AttkissonOct 17, 2016
She provides a lot of news sources and their ties to Media Matters/liberals and HIllary. Amazing how many sources rely on Soros' hated Media Matters. I knew about a few ties with them, but not all of them.  The following is a news media analysis and commentary  Regardless of who is your chosen – or least favorite – presidential candidate, independent minds should be concerned about the latest revelations in the news media’s unseemly relationships with governmen ...
Republicans More Open-minded, Better Informed Than DemocratsNov 04, 2012
Interesting article.  I found this statement interesting, and reading the board here, true: "A March 12 Pew study showed that Democrats are far more likely that conservatives to disconnect from people who disagree with them" “In all, 28% of liberals have blocked, unfriended, or hidden someone on SNS [social networking sites] because of one of these reasons, compared with 16% of conservatives and 14% of moderates,” said the report, tiled “Social networking sites and ...
Bladder IssuesMar 06, 2011
I had a hysterectomy about eleven years ago.  Since that time, I have had a lot of UTI\\\\\\\'s.  I would assume it is because I have a prolapsed bladder or cystocele.  I am seeing a Urologist on Thursday and I was wondering if he was going to recommend a sling procedure.  Has anyone had this done, and are you happy with it?  ...
Skin IssuesFeb 23, 2011
Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...
Weight IssuesMar 25, 2012
Okay, I have always been a medium built girl, somewhat petite at 5'3 and always carried my weight well. Two years ago I quit smoking and packed on 20 lbs. I got busy working out and counting calories, and tried to change my eating habits. Okay, it was gradual, but I lost 10 lbs. Over the course of some months it continued to decline gradually. But this Winter around the holidays I pigged out. Then I went through a transition where I lost my job, quit cooking and eating healthy and jus ...
Not My Kid, But Got Teenage IssuesAug 24, 2010
A very dear friend of my husband and I has gone off the deep end over the past year or more.  He is a full-blown cocaine/crack addict and his family has all but disowned him.  He pretty much does what he wants and is not anywhere near the point where he feels like he needs help. He has kicked his wife and her 15 year old daughter out of the house several times during his path of self destruction.  Most recent was this past weekend AFTER he took almost everything in their ...
Let's Talk Issues....smAug 01, 2012
Since it has been brought up that libs supposedly don't want to talk issues, let's do just that... Issue 1: Foreign policy: What exactly is it that Romney would do different from Obama in the middle east? Issue 2: Besides trying to kill Obamacare and therefore healthcare for tons of people, as well as lowering taxes for the rich, what is it exactly that Romney would do to improve the economy? I'm assuming pubs have the answers to these questions as they are so sure that Romn ...
Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014
I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes. This morning his eyes again (after not giving him the Vitamin C, switching out for L-Lysine) were looking a little worse. Would it be any problem to give him both the Lysine and the Vitamin C? Thanks my fellow catfolks! ...
Fertility IssuesOct 14, 2016
My daughter has been unble to get pregnant since she had a miscarriage 8 years ago.  She found out her right tube is completely blocked.  She wants a baby so much, and she would make a wonderful mother.  All of her friends are working on their 3rd or 4th ones now, and she cannot bring herself to go to baby showers anymore.  I encouraged her to look at foster care, since adopting a baby is expensive and takes forever.  I am reaching out to my peeps on this board to see if ...
NEIGHBOR ISSUESAug 22, 2015
There are 3 families with young children who live next to me.  My children are grown and gone.  All of the children like to come to my house, probably because I don't have to discipline them, I'm like a grandmother. Anyway, I will label them family A, B and C.  Family A is no longer allowed to play with family B or C - long story. I enjoy having all of the children at my house - I miss having children around.  I have never had this problem before and I'm not ...
Hypothyroidism And Skin IssuesApr 09, 2011
Need To Talk About Mental IssuesApr 27, 2011
I don't even know where to begin.  Right now, I am in such pain and emotional turmoil, but I know it is many times worse for my son.  He has been diagnosed with autism (educational diagnosis) later changed to Asperger's, and the initial medical diagnosis was PDD-NOS with ADHD (at age 3).  He is now in 9th grade and life is miserable for our whole family.  I am coming to believe that he may actually have (either with the above or any combination of thi ...
Feet Issues- For YearsAug 22, 2013
I have no idea where to go to get some help for myself. I have tried every single speciality that I thought perhaps could help but this has been going on for over 10 years now and no help. Tried ortho, podiatry, neurologist, nerve conduction studies, x-rays, MRIs, nothing found and no treatment and still going on. If not for Birkie's, have no clue what I would do but still feet aching. My left foot used to have electrical current that would hit, only when walking, never at night. That elect ...
Sinus/Allergy IssuesApr 27, 2014
Has anyone ever heard of this happening?  I have never, ever had any type of issues with sinus problems or allergy problems.  Back in October, I got sick and was living in a house with probably some mold and other allergens.  I got extremely sick and stayed that way for a couple of months.  Since then I have had a stuffy nose, unable to smell, limited taste and a stopped up ear, so that has been SEVEN months now!  I don't have insurance, so the only doctor I can aff ...
Two Issues (one Non MT) And A Question, So Will Post Here. Jun 08, 2016
I am on a job search (or was until last night). I had been trying for FT, PT, whatever comes along for the time being until I can find something stable outside the home. I received two invitations today to schedule interviews for FT positions. Now I need to know how to politely decline these so I'm not burning any bridges in case I end up needing them again. Husband Issues-Part 2Nov 05, 2014
I posted a short while back and got some great input and was asking for a bit more.  Short recap: I'm the one that the hubby has a lady at work who has a crush on him, made it known to a friend of mine, I confronted lady and hubby stopped talking to her, but didn't really have a confrontation with her.  I was upset at hubby, because I felt he should have confronted her, not just me.  Anyway, I decided to take the high road and just leave it alone and stop bothering hubby ...
Have A Question About End Of Life IssuesFeb 06, 2015
I know it makes no difference what a person wants in their directives, the family can and does sometimes want something else but I want to talk about vent care, life support. Okay, so if a person is at end of life and has no directives, the doctor says to the next of kin you have to make a decision, this person is gone. I know you cannot live like forever on life support, not like you are living but remain on life support is what I mean. What if the family says no, absolutely not and refuses to ...
Something To Beware Of/privacy IssuesJan 03, 2016
I have been spending the day studying. The issues of privacy and what lawyers call a "reasonable expectation of privacy" came up. Need To Tell My Grown Children About Medical IssuesOct 29, 2009
I have always considered myself in excellent health especially with all the health issues I type on each and every day with people younger or near my age. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in the late 80s and the doctor asked me about anyone in my family who had it, usually he said runs in the females and told me to let any daughters I might have the information. I went back to an older aunt and she could think of no one in the family with this. I since have been diagnosed with a kidney diseas ...
Female Felines With Anal Issues?Oct 21, 2012
I have had my male cat's anal gland expressed before but this morning noticed a very obnoxious odor from the female, very similar and thinking it is the same as the male. Has anyone else had female who had a similar problem? I am taking her plus the other 2 males in the home tomorrow to have all done, if that is the issue. I am feeling perhaps late in having this done and feeling bad that perhaps I missed but then again did not consider perhaps it happening to the female population. Has any ...
Neck And Cervical Strain IssuesMar 08, 2013
Would love any suggestions of how many of you have this problem.  I have tried neck exercises, shots and heating pad and ice to my right shoulder, try to watch my posture too.  My daughter also has this, but she does not sit at the computer like I do.  This is annoying and cannot get relief until I go to bed at night and it eases it somewhat, but then when working again I am plagued with it again.   I fear it is coming from a pinched nerve in my cervical neck but have no insu ...
