Female felines with anal issues?

Posted: Oct 21, 2012

I have had my male cat's anal gland expressed before but this morning noticed a very obnoxious odor from the female, very similar and thinking it is the same as the male. Has anyone else had female who had a similar problem? I am taking her plus the other 2 males in the home tomorrow to have all done, if that is the issue. I am feeling perhaps late in having this done and feeling bad that perhaps I missed but then again did not consider perhaps it happening to the female population. Has anyone had any ongoing problems in perhaps letting this go too long before having it done? Thanks.

You have the option of skipping posts regarding pet health issues that you find distasteful. You don't have to read any of the replies either. I am truly sorry that are unable to handle this sort of post. For most animal lovers and pet owners/guardians this is just routine. Am I right gals and guys?

Yes - it's a common issue

for pet owners.

There is nothing wrong with posting about an issue with the health of a pet, human, plant--whatever.

I agree...this is open forum. And people can choose to read or not read. Hopefully everyone will 'dislike' the negative posts and start being more supportive and positive. :)

We hear and type about anatomy all the time, male, female and all this is has to do with animal anatomy. I find nothing wrong about a body be it human or animal myself. Had no idea this would offend anyone.

you are wrong - we aint vets

and we have degraded appropriate social interaction by remaining faceless, as though that excuses social impoliteness. Imagine picking up a microphone at any social gathering and annoucing that this is the "right" venue for conversation. Just because you are old, don't make it right...
Well - I for one

consider this board to be more like a coffee chat amongst friends--apparently you're just out for the fancy dinner. Stop being so stuffy.

For the OP--I don't know anything about cats, but my sister's 2 female dogs had chronic problems with their anal glands. Not to the point of infection, but they don't drain properly. Apparently this is a common problem in older female dogs. She has her husband express them, since she can't do it =]
It was costing her $40/dog/vet visit for an express and they were going every week at one point.

The concept is simple. This is a chat forum and you have a choice to participate or not. You are not sitting in an auditorium being forced to participate. My being old (63) has nothing to do with anything. The driving force behind your reaction, I think, is your intolerance to sensitive (to you) topics; so again I say, skip over topics that make you uncomfortable and do not participate. What else can I say?

I will be 70 this coming March and way past the time of being turning red in the face because of language, anatomy talk, what have you. I absolutely think there is a place where you can discuss ideas and get the thoughts of others that may have had the same issues you have. I would think especially in the line of work we all do that to discuss anything related to a body, feline, canine, human, etc., should not only be informational but at the same time should never be standoffish.

The 1 cat that I was asking about did not have the issue but I took 3 and 1 of them did which the doctor took care of. However, 2 of the cats had worms and so those were treated. All had their toenails clipped and 2 of them had a hygiene clip at the rear because they are long-haired and makes cleaning easier. I appreciate the information all gave. Thanks.
Thanks for the update, Precious. sm - anon

Glad she didn't have to have her anal glands expressed. Good job!

What is so disgusting about the words "anal gland"? sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Surely you have heard much worse while transcribing. This is the Gab forum, and I am interested in pet health issues. This can be a serious problem in cats and dogs. One of my long-haired cats ended up with an infected anal gland and vet had to do surgery on it. Why so squeamish?

My question to the OP, are your cats fixed? If not, I was wondering if your female cat has issues with her female organs......ooooooopppps, is it okay to say "pyometria". Well, hoping it is not pyometria. Can you see any blood or pus on the anal gland itself? Hard to see with fur, particulary if you have a long-haired cat. Let us know what vet says.

Are animals fixed? - Precious

[ In Reply To ..]
Absolutely, all 4 of them, 2 female, 2 male, all animals that came to me from situations either be it rescued or from others to live the easy life here. There are too many animals in this world without my adding to the problem further. I have used wipes this morning but not really able to examine well so will leave that to the professional tomorrow.
I had a fixed female with that issue - MT

My dearly departed 17yro had that issue once in her life. One day, she just had some horrible smell come from her behind and I researched it online, and figured out what it was. I just got some gloves and a wet gauze and squeezed it out and cleaned her up, never had problems again. Good luck.

There is a ton of you tubes on how to express your cat's anal glands- or your vet might even show you how to do it (unless he's greedy and wants to charge you for a procedure - and an office visit). It's a simple procedure.

Good luck!

Have you ever done it? Maybe for a dog, but cats are more difficult. I've seen my vet and a tech do it while the tech held my cat. No thanks. It is also very painful for the animal if infected. Think like if you had an infected boil....it has to hurt. Best left to the professionals if infected. If it is infected, cat will need to be seen by vet anyway and put on antibiotics.

Outside Cat, Trying To Solve Eye Issues AndOct 27, 2014
I wrote down below about outside cat that has eye issues. Some told me about L-Lysine, got that and started 1000 mg a day or so ago. What I would like to know, have some Vitamin C that I was giving him and he seemed to have brighter eyes. This morning his eyes again (after not giving him the Vitamin C, switching out for L-Lysine) were looking a little worse. Would it be any problem to give him both the Lysine and the Vitamin C?
