A system that does away with our antiquated, divisive, polarizing party system.
A voting system that works by popular vote, NOT the rigged Electoral College.
A government where decisions are not made by the amount of money thrown at them by corporations and special interest groups.
Election years where John Q. Public is NOT bombarded with mudslinging, misleading TV ads. Each candidate would be allowed ONE TV ad, and there would be a cap (and a fairly low one, at that) on how much they could spend on their campaign, even if it's their own money. That would level the field and allow less-wealthy, but likely far more intelligent and caring candidates into the field.
Obviously, looking at what little we voters have to choose from in the 2012 election, the "gene pool" of politicians has evaporated, and is dangerously low. That could be improved if some younger, smarter, more progressive blood were allowed into the government decision-making process.
The U.S. has worn itself, its people, and its resources dangerously thin by appointing itself police and keeper of the rest of the world. At the expense of the very people who live and work in this country. More resources should be turned inward to repair the internal damage. Our infrastructure. Our jobs. (Let the Indians and Chinese build their own economies. If ours crashes, we won't be of much help to them anyway, and may bring them down with us).
There needs to be a more fair and humane way for people in the US to get what they need in the way of housing, food, jobs, healthcare, education. We squawk about how our children's educational opportunities are going down the toilet, and yet there are no free universities. Everyone who wants to go to college should have the opportunity, regardless of age, income, race, etc. If tuition must be charged, it should be tiered by ability to pay.
With a more-educated next generation, we stand a better chance of coming up with solutions to some really big problems that lie ahead, and have been swept under the rug: Pollution, global warming, reliance on fossil fuel, overpopulation of the entire planet, disappearance of forest lands, species of animals, cures for disease, etc.
A new economy should factor in seniors, because like it or not, all us baby boomers are gonna clobber this country with our sheer numbers, unless there is a way for us to continue working. Right now, if you're over 60 and need to continue working for another 10-20 years, you're screwed, because no one will accept your applications.
There should also be FREE job-retraining for all in this country who need it. At age 61, I know I could sure use it, but have no hope of affording it, even if I thought I had a snowball's chance in H___ of ever getting hired in a new career at my age. That all has to stop. Today's seniors are NOT the feeble old folks of our parents' generation. We're fitter and younger than our chronological years would lead most to believe. But how is a potential employer to know that if we can't get a foot in the door for an interview?
There has to be a cap on how much money these megacompanies can rake in, before they have to mandatorily invest more of it in their workers. Workers need to be thought of not as expendable liabilities, but living, breathing ASSETS to a company. Also, the more fair-wage-earnging workers we have in the US, the more tax dollars we'll have to put back into our roads, bridges, national parks, etc.
Maybe companies, insted of getting a tax break for hiring offshore workers, should instead get a big, fat tax break for ON-THE-JOB TRAINING. Talk about a win-win situation! There are so many things many of us could do for a living, and would positive shine at, if we were given the chance to learn on the job.
And those are just a few of the ideas I can come up with. So, here's a challenge to all the rest of you:
What would YOU do to change the country and government for the better? (No name-calling or meanness, please. Just workable, amicable solutions.)
Get ready, get set, GO!
