Wondering about capped teeth

My dentist seems to be finding a lot of things to do involving capping and recapping and I dont have any problems actually. Not sure I want to start tearing off caps at this stage of the game.

At $1000 a tooth (barring anything unforseen, i.e., having to do a buildup), I get the feeling he is more behind on his payments than concerned for my oral health.

just want more money. If there is no "medical/dental" reason for it, no way. It is not like it is a painless procedure with drilling you teeth down, multiple visits, and most important--even if medically necessary dental insurance pays nothing hardly.

I knew times were tough when my dentist (who I have seen for years, I am in my 50's) decided that instead of just the teeth whitening I wanted, I should do it right. This entailed roughly 2 years of braces (did this in my teens, puh-leeze!), then new caps in the front, veneers along the sides. HA HA HA. I got my teeth cleaning and left. That is exactly the feeling that I got. He was just looking for anything to tear off my old caps and redo them. When they bother me or get a cavity I will then have the cavity filled and make the cap part of the tooth. I know you can do that. I guess they have lost a lot of business due to most people dont get cavities anymore with fluoride around. Not good to keep recapping teeth because it can kill them with all that new grinding around. Hey I am also older so if worst comes to it they can remove it.

I have gotten the standard cleaning for years and have taken great care of my teeth. I recently switched insurance and had to switch dentists. He tells me i'm in grave danger of losing all my teeth at an early age and in order to avoid this I will need scaling, laser, and then a cleaning. They refused to do the basic cleaning without the former, so I had it done. Of course instead of the free cleaning I had to pay the 100 dollar copay for the extra procedure. They tried the same thing on my hubby (his teeth are in better condition than mine) and he refused. We went to pick up our records and are changing dentists. Pretty sad when doctors/dentists use fear tactics to get their patients to pay more out of pocket.

Same thing with my vet! My cat was in a fight with a tomcat and needed stitches. My vet wanted me to take my cat to a cardiac specialist, get an MRI, and other procedures upwards of 3000 dollars when all he needed was stitches and antibiotics! She had me thinking my cat was at deaths door if he did not get these procedures done. Scary times we live in.

I am the one that posted about the caps. The other thing I find interesting with my dentist and his digital x-rays is that for probably 12 years I have not had a cavity and I did get x-rays from my regular dentist that retired and also from a periodontist I went to but when I switched dentists a year or so ago I seem to always have something he finds. I saw how may coffee lovers we have on this board below, and I am certainly one of them, but I just can't stand how brown my teeth turn when I drink it. Any tips to keep this from happening? Okay, weird question, but I'm wondering if your teeth shift around after a certain age (I'm 53). The reason is this. About 4 months or so ago I had a tooth that broke in half. It is one that has a filling. Went to the dentist and it cannot be repaired. It needs to be extracted and then I would get a bridge or partial. My father passed away this past week, he took his own life. He was 75 years old and in bad physical shape and constant pain. His nightmare was that he would be put into a nursing home.
