Has Anyone Ever Moved to Alaska?

Posted: Feb 10, 2012

I currently live in New York State and we (dh and 3 children) are considering moving to Alaska.  We have been looking around Anchorage, Cordova area.  I was just wondering if anyone has made the move before, or even currently lives there, that may be able to give some insight.  Thanks!

Not to Alaska but I am dying to move to Maine - AnaPhylaxis

I drool over online real estate listings all the time. My big dream is to live in one of the little fishing villages. If I had been born male, I definitely would have been a fisherman by trade.

Good luck with the Alaska venture...I hope someday to post I'm packing up and moving to Maine myself, LOL!

I flew to Main several years ago and took a week long schooner sailing expedition along the coast...one of the best vacations of my life!

JAKE IN MAINE... - Can you email me some details (sm)

I'd love to know which village it is so I can google image it and drool. Also, how's the cost of living there? Is property terribly expensive? I'm just dying to at least take a 2-week vacation there to check out several little villages and then see to which one I'd like to move. Also, have you lived there long? Sorry to ask all these questions...I'm just so excited to find someone living my dream, LOL!

Check prices of things.. sm - Gigi

I know a gallon of milk can cost upwards of $9 to $10 because of the expense of bringing it in, same with other staples. What we take for granted because it can easily be hauled across the country takes a lot more effort to get there.

I wouldn't be able to afford to live there just because of the cost of basic things.

I lived there 18 years before we moved to the Lower 48 for our kids to have more educational opportunities. My husband still works there and travels back and forth with his rotational job schedule. Cordova is not doable. It is very isolated and only accessible via air or ferry. People have such misconceptions of the size and isolation of Alaska. Anchorage and Fairbanks are the biggest cities and comparable to what you find in most cities are far as schools, crime, etc. it is very expensive though. House rent in Fairbanks is about $2000 for 3 bed and utilities are much higher. Food is surprisingly reasonable in the two large cities but very expensive in the villages.

Most people end up leaving Alaska. It is very hard on women I think. Men tend to love it there. I liked it after a time only because it became familiar, but now that I live in the south, I do not want to go back to the darkness and winter weather. Plus my kids have a huge choice of colleges here, and that is not available in AK. We would see people arrive in Alaska looking for the place they dreamed about, only to find that it is not what they thought it would be. Alaska is a beautiful place, isolated, expensive, very laid back, with wonderful outdoor activities, and decent schools, but there are problems there like falling wages, alcoholism, high divorce rates, and high cost of living. Get better educated before you pack up and head north.

I lived in Adak for a while. Very remote. If the plane didn't make it in with food - it was powdered eggs and powdered milk. The scenery was beautiful and there's an abundance of hiking adventures. You can't beat fresh king crab, halibut and caribou but you need to look at the every day practical cost of living. May be good for a visit.

Thank you. I have been researching for awhile but - good to hear from others. bp

Of course, now I will have to check Maine, LOL! :)

A voting system that works by popular vote, NOT the rigged Electoral College.A government where decisions are not made by the amount of money thrown at them by corporations and special interest groups. Election years where John Q. Public is NOT bombarded with mudslinging, misleading TV ads. Each candidate would be allowed ONE TV ad, and there would be a cap (and a fairly low one, at that) on how much they could spend ...

Zimmerman Posts Moved Back To Politics BoardJul 23, 2013
My reasoning for moving the Zimmerman posts here was because most the posts were just people "gabbing" about their opinion of it and was not offering any political input.  I had figured that since everyone had been talking about other trials on the gab board, this is where the posts should go.  Then the posts started getting more political and the arguing and name calling continued and I don't think anyone on the gab board was happy about that. So as political moderator I have ta ...
