Is it just me or an I the only one wondering where the outrage is regarding...

Posted: Aug 24, 2013

I think the Travan Martin case was tragic.  It evoked enormous response, even from the POTUS, but where the heck is the outrage regarding the 88-year-old WW II white veteran who was pulled from his car and beaten to death by two 16-year-old black kids?  Just where is it?  This man fought and was injured in Iwo Jima for God's sake, gave years for his Country, and we hear nothing?  That is sick.  I'd just like to see some reaction from somebody.

;

everyone is outraged by this awful crime - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
No one is defending these kids. Everyone knows it's a horrible crime. Kid is charged with first-degree murder. What exactly are you looking for?

I want to hear from Al Sharpton!!!!!! - Just saying...

[ In Reply To ..]
I want to hear from all those who screamed race when the tables were turned...President Obama? AG Holder? Where are they now?

honestly - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Certainly you understand that the Martin/Zimmerman case carried s-i-g-n-i-f-i-c-a-n-t legal issues given the circumstances surrounding the shooting. I don't think there is anyone on the planet that is going to deny the very real issues of violence perpetrated by people of any race in our communities and cities.

Do you want black leaders to comment on every crime perpetrated by black youths?
Honestly? - media
[ In Reply To ..]
Anyone can kill someone of their own race, that is fine. Another race can kill a white person, that's fine. Another race kills a black person, then it's a racial crime! The media knows this and they keep these new stories going because it gives good ratings.
I don't agree - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe you are consuming too much mass media.

I agree - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This "hate crime" should be just as highly publicized.

You mean you want to hear from Pat Robertson? - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
I think you're a bit mixed up about the racial dynamics of the Trayvon Martin case, and what the equivalent would be in the case you bring up now.

All accounts I've read say robbery was the motive, - not race.

[ In Reply To ..]
Aggravated robbery/assault was committed on the closest most visible target, a defenseless old man. Can you please cite any articles to the contrary where it has been clearly established that race was a motivating factor? Perhaps that's the reason this is not being perceived as a race crime in the media or getting a lot of attention from politicians.

BTW, had GZ not been released WITHOUT CHARGES and left to roam the streets as a free man and, instead, been sequentially held, charged, bonded, tried and judged in due course, the story would have NEVER made national headlines for months on end. The parents had NO RECOURSE when seeking justice for their son, other than bringing harsh media glare down to bear on a situation that otherwise would have let the shooter off scot-free. Also, this robbery-gone-deadly did not involve any specifically controversial legal or political principles...just a senseless and sadly tragic crime.

Why do people keep comparing different - situations?

[ In Reply To ..]
The Martin and Zimmerman case was different because Zimmerman wasn't being arrested!

So now every time a white person dies, people cry "where is the outrage!"

Well, I'll spell it out for you AGAIN. If the perpetrators were allowed to walk free without an arrest or trial, there would be need for outrage.

It just so happens that in ALL OF THESE CASES people keep bringing up to somehow desperately compare them--the people have already all been ARRESTED as they SHOULD BE.

Good Lord, man. It's not rocket science!

I too am looking for something from Sharpton. - LM (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
But I won't hold my breath.

Guess the people who market news-viewer - groups to advertisers decided that particular

[ In Reply To ..]
kind of outrage has become a glut on the market, in danger of turning viewers off. And can't have that. We have a current kidnapped blonde, so we don't need another of those for a while either.

ITM, if more outrage is desired, Fox actually specializes in bigger appetites. For those who need confirmation that it's a dangerous world out there, they also serve up a lot of street crime, with an extremely large proportion of really stupid criminals, though--crimes for the confirmation, stupid so people don't get too anxious or depressed and change the channel. It's a balancing act.

Because unfortunately....... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Because black people were once slaves, for some reason it is felt that white people STILL owe them something, even though it was their ancestors that were slaves and not them personally. Everyone is on this bandwagon about equality and such, but it's not even about being equal, it continues to be about paying them back for something that I know that me personally, I never owned a slave, so i don't owe anyone anything. I'm NOT trying to categorize black people in general, I know not all of them are like this, but the ones who are just keep the pot stirred!

: o - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
When we refer to people as "them" we ARE categorizing.

Equality is not a bandwagon.

None of this has anything to do with blacks seeking payback because of slavery. It has to do with white people wanting to promote outrage at black people.

curious - NK

[ In Reply To ..]
On what source did you base your opinion that it's all about owing black Americans for slavery? Do you have a lot of black relatives and friends who have endorsed this philosophy? What black leaders have you heard talking about being owed for slavery?

I don't think too many, black or - white

[ In Reply To ..]
feel that whites still owe blacks anything because of slavery. However, the sad fact is that karma is still being played out for America's shameful racial distant and recent past, and may well continue to do so for the next 100 years or longer.

Circumstances between the two - cases

[ In Reply To ..]
are likely somewhat different, but maybe after investigation and trial someone will get outraged.

This crime... - mls

[ In Reply To ..]
...doesn't appear to have been racially motivated, as the Trayvon Martin case was. These were a couple of opportunistic thugs looking to rob someone. Why is it, among a certain segment of the population, that whenever a crime is perpetrated by a black person, the entire race is culpable? Also, I've only just read about this crime today, but I've seen plenty of outrage on the internet.

It is unknown if... - Oldie

[ In Reply To ..]
if this will turn out to be racially motivated. I just wondered where the outrage was.

If you want to go down the racially motivated pathway, I must have missed the POTUS disgust about the Australian student's slaughter by two black kids and one white kid, especially in view of the Facebook rankings of one that he hated whites. Where is the reaction to that?

You have to consider why there was outrage - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
In the Australian case, the perpetrators were swiftly found and arrested.

Zimmerman was allowed to leave the police station after killing a teenager and the police were even tailoring their investigation to fit into Zimmerman's work/school schedule. The investigation was going to drag on into infinity. What investigation there was, that is. The police botched everything from the beginning, but why bother, a black kid in a hoodie... so what.

Should an Australian student's life have a value greater than a black teenager?

The outrage stemmed from the fact that it appeared that Zimmerman was going to be let off the hook and the police did not seem serious about investigating the crime. Obviously the crime itself was an outrage, but had things been handled differently from the beginning, even if the outcome was the same (Zimmerman not guilty), we probably never would have known about it.
outrage - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
you want to know why we have no outrage of a black kid in a hoodie? look at what happened to that old man in Spokane! That's your answer. That black kid in a hoodie Trayvon was a social misfit and a thug. Good riddance.

Oldie, you are not alone here. - sickend

[ In Reply To ..]
The ignorance of those who seem unaffected by this horrific black on white crime is disgusting. Bet if it was 2 whites on an old black man all hell would be let loose. I too am sick and tired of blacks thinking its ok to act out in violence. No proper upbringing to respect our elders. I live very close to where this man was murdered and let me tell you, the kid that is still out there better be praying to God he gets caught by the police first.

oldie, there would be plenty of outrage - - very reasonable outrage...

[ In Reply To ..]
if the individuals responsible for the killing were not held responsible for it. One has already been arrested and charged. The other is being sought by law enforcement - because EVERYONE recognizes this is a crime.

Thank you. That is EXACTLY the point. It's pretty simple, but they - choose not to get it.

[ In Reply To ..]
Any other justification would be failure to comprehend the simplest of concepts.

Then your thoughts are that the justice system only works when - Oldie

[ In Reply To ..]
It turns out your way. We might not agree with the verdict in the Zimmerman case, but there was a trial with a real judge, real peers, a real prosecutor, and an outcome. I wasn't on the jury. I don't know if the verdict was one I would agree with, but it nevertheless is done. There was a lot of public outcry regarding OJ, Casey Anthony, etc. If you don't like the verdict, by all means appeal it, but do move on with some semblance of dignity, integrity, and certainly with fact-based reasons, not emotionally-induced crystal of racism.
That was not my point at all - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
My point and the point of the person to whom I responded was that the perpetrators of the crime you referenced were identified and arrested immediately, as they should have. Likewise, Zimmerman should have not been allowed to leave the police station after taking someone's life. Do you think the police joked around with the black men as they did with Zimmerman during their "interrogation"?

I said nothing about the verdict. I accept the verdict. Please don't twist my words or speak for me.
well done - nm
