Brain-dead child now being moved to extended care

Posted: Dec 27, 2013

I read the family of the child that had the tonsillectomy was not accepting the fact that the child was brain dead and still hoped for a miracle. The family wanted the child moved from the hospital to extended care. I thought who would take her. My friend said always someone if they want to make money. I now hear this morning a nursing home has said they will take. After 2 different physicians saying brain dead the family still thinks she might wake up. I have a question about this. If brain dead, does the body not start to decay after awhile? ;

She will have machines breathing for her - and a tube feeding

her, as well as a host of other devices to perform the work of her failed brain, so I don't think she will 'decay,' but I can't imagine she will come out of this the same kid that she was, even if the family gets their miracle. So sad. At the very least, she will probably develop contractures of her limbs, even with rigorous physical therapy.

She won't "come out of it". There's a big - difference between coma, which - sm

is probably what the parents mistakenly think their daughter is in, and being brain-dead. The brain is dead. The person that lived in that body is dead, and has passed on to whatever comes after death. Keeping her body - now an empty shell - "alive" artificially will never bring her back. I feel so sorry for the family, not only for their loss, but for not realizing that their daughter is gone. The nursing homes that refused to take on a hopeless case like that are actually the ethical ones. Whichever one does take her - if they do find one - will be all about the money.

It's a very sad situation all the way around.

Hope they have deep financial pockets to pay - and not soak medicaid

Horrible turn of events for their daughter. But she is DEAD. Keeping her breathing and her blood coursing through her veins will not change that.

Sure hope THEY are planning to pay for the extended care to keep her blood flowing through her veins and her lungs pumping oxygen into her blood. This is VERY expensive care required and EXTREMELY selfish of them to most likely expect taxpayers to foot the bill while the come to acceptance that their daughter has passed into eternity already.

soak medicaid? - that's an interesting remark

Why do you assume Medicaid? Because the family is black?

Why Medicaid - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The assumption of Medicaid is valid. Insurance will decline to support a brain-dead patient. That is why nursing homes would not take her. Not all of them accept Medicaid.

Few can afford nursing home expenses, so Medicaid is the only option.

Insurance isn't going to pay for that. Regardless - of how wealthy the family is, _sm_

with the kind of bills they're looking at for indefinite, full-on life support in a nursing home environment, they'll eventually lose everything they have and end up on Medicaid.

I've learned one thing from this sad story: No matter how young you are, it's a good idea to have your end-of-life wishes put into a living will.

Yes, let's focus on the important thing. - Money.

NOT.

Let's focus on the other important thing, then: - IGNORANCE.

REALITY. The young girl is, unfortunately, DEAD. All the ventilators and private care in the world will not bring her back. I feel so sorry for her family, but the sad reality is that she is dead.

Babysitting/child Care In CaliforniaJun 17, 2011
Hello out there...my 22-year-old is home from college this summer and is going to take care of my neighbor's 2 daughters, ages 5 and 6, a couple of days a week probably for around 8 hours a day.  What would be a good rate for her to charge?  It's been so long, I don't even have a clue.  I used to do daycare before my illustrious transcription career so I know people can't pay a normal minimum wage.  Would 5/hr be good?  Any suggestions would be greatl ...

Help In Dealing With Extended Family Apr 01, 2010
For years now my husband's sister and her husband have been trying to manipulate the family at every opportunity we are together.  It has become somewhat laughable at time because it's always expected.  At other times it is tremendously frustrating.  They find a way to throw a wedge into the plans even when the plans are bent to accommodate them.  They are never satisfied and cannot seem to go with the flow as the rest of us try to do.  Unfortunately& ...

His temporary move from Paul to McConnell was supposed to bring the two adversaries closer together, their two GOP wings closer together, and set Rand Paul up for 2016. As for holding noses, Benton has himself recently been implicated in alleged bribery of an Iowa state senator to endorse Ron Paul during the last election. From the Washington Post; recorded conversation is real, at the link below.   McConnell campaign manager Jesse Benton says he is running the race ‘holdin’ m ...

Zimmerman Posts Moved Back To Politics BoardJul 23, 2013
My reasoning for moving the Zimmerman posts here was because most the posts were just people "gabbing" about their opinion of it and was not offering any political input.  I had figured that since everyone had been talking about other trials on the gab board, this is where the posts should go.  Then the posts started getting more political and the arguing and name calling continued and I don't think anyone on the gab board was happy about that. So as political moderator I have ta ...

Fox Proven Hazardous To BrainDec 17, 2010
Extended exposure to Fox News makes voters stupid, university study finds   The troublesome record of spin by conservative television station Fox News has long been a cause for concern to many Americans, who frequently allege that the nation's most viewed "news" network has the effect of dumbing down voters.   Turns out, they were right.   A University of Maryland study (PDF) published earlier this month found that people in the survey who had the most exp ...
