Divorced Mom, raised 2 sons and proud to do it

Posted: Nov 7, 2012

This message is in response to a post responding to my previous post "turned away from ER outraged...." in the below post concerning Prop 187...

Yes, I am sincere and I am very proud.  I raised 2 sons on my own, working 2 and 3 jobs, they both graduated from College without debt to pay back, because we all 3 worked and we all 3 had a goal we knew we had to reach, and yes still being a "payer."  So I am supposed to feel sorry that people sneaked into OUR country illegally and they use their children to their benefit.  I am sorry, maybe I am old school, but I do not think there is anything wrong with expecting people to accept responsibility, and certainly not to use a child to benefit the adult.

This is the biggest problem with the whole liberal approach.  While I was in line to vote, a lady I used to work with ended up being in line in front of me with her husband.  She told me she hoped someone would help them because it was the first time they had ever voted, and they were not young folks.  Jokingly I said I'll help you if your voting for the right person.  She said, Obama, I said, "Oh no, you don't want me to help you."  She went on to say they were voting for Obama because Romney would take their welfare and food stamps away from them, that they had been contacted and told this would happen.

This is a common belief among some folks, and in my opinion a very poor reason for choosing who you are going to vote for.  Unfortunately, the Obama camp used this sector, yes used them, fear tactics, promises they won't be able to keep long-term, etc.

Three of my best friends are immigrants, my brother-in-law is an immigrant and they all came with Visas and they all work and support their families.  So yes, I am against assuming responsibility for those who break the law and in essence take away from OUR OWN U.S. CITIZENS that are honest and need help.

your final line.

"So yes, I am against assuming responsibility for those who break the law and in essence take away from OUR OWN U.S. CITIZENS that are honest and need help."

The assumption that you know who is honest and needs help. What if someone dares ask for or accept help that you don't deem deserving enough? And what if you're wrong?

That's my main problem with the conservative approach. I'm not willing to cut programs to people who honestly need it. The system needs work to weed out the scammers, but I'll never vote to throw the baby out with the bath water.

You seem awfully certain you and yours will never be among those who need help. In reality, none of us can be sure.

My thoughts too - Fanatical Hypocrite

Not referring to the OP in this at all (she's just expressing her honest viewpoint and her concerns), but I often feel that the true motives behind getting rid of social programs, especially among actual politicians, is the desire to pick who gets what. Where the government throws a blanket of cash over everyone, there is a movement to move those social programs into the private sector for corporations, philanthropists and churches. While charity from them is always needed, corporations will support whatever makes them look the best, philanthropists will go for the cause closest to their own heart and churches will tend to their flock before someone else's.

So, while the Republican politicians say that they want this because the government can't handle the responsibility, I think they really mean "So people we don't like never get a leg up."

My problem with it is I don't believe her. BTW, voting is a right. - I do help and do not ask who for. A lib.nm

My Sons Death On 12/23/09Jan 25, 2010
My son passed away on 12/23/09.  He was found barely breathing and EMS called.  Autopsy showed really nothing and we don't have the results back from toxicology back yet.  I have obtained his medical records and it is one mess of errors in every way possible. One of the things I found out is that EMS did an incorrect endotracheal tube placement in that they put the tube in the esophagus.  That is quite common but usually is found immediately upon listening to the chest a ...

I know a lot of people are struggling but I wanted to ask for prayers.  I've been trying to make ends meet, working two MT jobs making almost nothing, but my sons and I are going to lose the home we rent and I just have no real hope of anything.  Again, I know so many of us are having problems, just not sure where to turn.  It'll be the first Christmas I can't give them anything, although they're good boys who understand.  It's also the firs ...

Being 46 And A Divorced Mom Stinks!!! Anyone My Age Feel The Same? SmNov 13, 2013
It seems that women who end up divorcing in their 30s or younger (although none of us wants to divorce at all) have a much better chance of finding someone new.  I divorced at 41 and can't seem to find anyone who is just a decent person.  Let's see, I don't make enough money, and I need to lose weight.  That probably all contributes.  Just feeling lonely and old and fat and broke.  Can someone please tell me that it gets better? ...

Question For Single Moms/divorced Women Out ThereJul 27, 2011
Hey Everyone out there.  Got a question for single moms/divorced women out there.  I am needing to kick the hubby to the curb.  Ever since he turned 30, my husband has decided that he is 18-21 again......drinking, going out all night to the bars, being hung over the next day, just being a loser.  I'm sick of it, I'm done with it, I don't even love him anymore, so how do I get out and make a clean break when there are children involved?  They are young (5 a ...

How many of you were born, raised, and continue to live near the same place, or even the same state? I oftentimes get patients who were born and/or raised in one place and then moved all over the country.  I was raised within 20 miles of my brithplace, born in my mother's bedroom. Nobody has moved out of the area except maybe my brother in the military, ...

How Is Your Parenting Effected By The Way You Were Raised? Feb 16, 2012
I am always interested in how people raise their own children and if their approach is at all influenced by their own upbringing -- say if they imitate their own parent's or if they totally reject anything that might suggest doing things the way their parents did it.  I have had many friends and acquaintenances who absolutely rejected anything close to what their parents did.  To my way of thinking, their parents could not have been totally wrong.  Personally, I come from a ...

Giuliani went so far as to rebuke the President for not being "brought up the way you were and the way I was brought up through love of this country," a bow no doubt to the parenting prowess of Harold Giuliani, who did time in Sing Sing for holding up a Harlem milkman and was the bat-wielding enforcer for the loan-sharking operation run out of a Brooklyn bar owned by Rudy's uncle. Though Rudy cited Harold throughout his public life as his model (without revealing any of his history), he an ...
