Democrats are the best friends big business every had.

Posted: Oct 13, 2015

contenders at Tuesday's Democratic presidential debate will say they're the toughest on big business. What they won't say is their own policies favor big business, big time. Bernie Sanders, the self-described socialist who's been attracting big crowds and gaining ground on Hillary Clinton in polls, gave a glimpse of this over the weekend, telling "Meet the Press" how he plans to compare "my consistency and my willingness to stand up to Wall Street corporations, big corporations, with the Secretary." Clinton, meanwhile, has been moving rapidly leftward to shore up support among the party's increasingly hard-left base, opposing the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal and the Keystone XL pipeline and proposing to break up Wall Street banks, raise the minimum wage, etc. Despite all this anti-corporate rhetoric, the fact is that Sanders and Clinton will be the best friends big business could ever hope for, since their regulatory agenda will invariably help big, established businesses at the expense of small, entrepreneurial competitors. That, after all, is their legacy in the banking and health care industries. Both Sanders and Clinton are big boosters of the Dodd-Frank financial reform. But a recent Harvard study found that the massive regulatory scheme that it imposed has hurt small community banks the most. The researchers found that community banks' share of assets declined in the second quarter of 2010 at "almost double" the rate four years earlier. Another report found that 2,000 community banks and credit unions have closed or merged since 2010. Given that community banks disproportionately serve small businesses, farming and home mortgage markets, this hits more than just the financial sector. "The exponential growth of regulation in recent years is suffocating community banks' ability to serve their small business customers," Doyle Mitchell of Industrial Bank told the House Small Business panel. "Any community banker will tell you that their job has fundamentally shifted from lending and serving customers to struggling to stay on top of ever-changing rules and guidance." The American Enterprise Institute's Peter Wallison found that job creation among small businesses has been virtually non-existent since Dodd-Frank, because "millions of small firms ... are not getting the credit they need to grow and create jobs." Even Sanders and Clinton are complaining that the "too-big-to-fail banks" have only gotten bigger since Dodd-Frank, without explaining that their own policy prescriptions fueled this trend. Consolidation is the name of the game in health care as well, as ObamaCare's costs drive mergers and buyouts in the hospital and insurance industries. There were twice as many hospital mergers in 2014 as there were the year before President Obama signed his signature bill into law. Earlier this year, insurance giants Aetna and Anthem announced plans to acquire Humana and Cigna, respectively, turning the "big five" insurance companies into the big three. Both industries cite ObamaCare's massive new set of rules, regulations, taxes and fees as prompting these mergers. All this is in keeping with the long and terrible history of government regulations. The more intrusive the federal rules, the fewer firms that compete and the more consumers suffer. It happened in both airlines and trucking, which saw an explosion in choice and competition after deregulation. And it happens across the economy. A recent paper from George Mason University's Mercatus Center said, "Regulation has a negative effect on new firm creation and employment growth." The 24% increase in federal regulations from 1998 through 2011 cut new firm entry by 1.2%. Clinton, Sanders and the rest of the Democratic Party like to talk a good populist game. But in the real world, their policies are corporatism at its worst. ;

Big Govt, Big Business, Big Labor. Bigger is better, - comrade.

No discussion about dems, the debate and the media autopsy - afterwards. It was like watching The View.

BORING.

In a nutshell, more free stuff. DNC vice chair was "disinvited" - after she called for more face-offs.

CNN didn't pit the dems against each other like the pubs.

Also, illegal immigrants will be given free college - tuition and Obamacare.

Democrats are the ONLY ones who do anything - for vets at all
[ In Reply To ..]
Check the repub record on vets - they vote EVERYTHING down, up to an including foreign embassies (THEY defunded Benghazi), anything to do with the Veterans Administration, even 911 heroes they vote against.

Speaking of free stuff, what about all the stuff - the Repubs want to take away?

[ In Reply To ..]
Like our Social Security, Medicare, reproductive rights, voting rights, and what about the things the Republicans want to do?

EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN is saying we must increase the retirement age, cut or privatize Social Security, Medicare, cut things like food stamps, Medicaid, to deprive poor people of the very small amount of help they can get now.

The Republicans and Fox News are virtually say to us low incomers, "Who ya gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?"

Don't fall for it. Smoke and mirrors, NOT any decent policies for us as middle/low income people.

If a Republican gets in, wars/defense budget will go up, Social Security and Medicare will get ripped off, and voting and reproductive rights are going to go back 50-100 years.

Pretty much everybody on the stage hate American values. They - seemed like they knew questions

More tax everybody and spend like crazy, a managed collapse of the country so to speak.

Bernie promised the most freebies, so he probably won the debate.

Don't underestimate your fellow Americans: They gave us 0bama. Twice.

I'm sure Putin is not feeling too scared. Bernie and his - wife honeymooned in USSR back in the

Think Hillary's emails. The elites hate it when they can't get away with crimes.
Sanders proves that government has become religion. - He speaks of "morals" to a generation

Kudos if you managed to sit through the whole debate. - It looked more like a Democrat rally

to me. All candidates seemed to be in agreement - and they took turns bashing the Republicans. I tapped out early.

No interest in Hillary's emails. However, Sarah Palin's a few - years ago, not that was a different

story to the press. The MSM showed who they really are. Applause, applause, applause.....

Yes, they didn't call each other names, so it was - boring and depends on what you think is important

[ In Reply To ..]
Personally I dislike all the name-calling Republicans have been doing for years now. They didn't used to do that. This is new. It isn't good.

I thought it was an outstanding debate. Issues rather than - personal attacks. nm

Add the Chamber of Commerce to that list. Corporate socialism. - I no longer go to bat for big business,

[ In Reply To ..]
but I do for small business who unfortunately suffers because of the hatred for Big Business.

I think Big Business, like unions, give money to the govt if it serves their financial interests.

Back in the fifties and sixties, US corporations would make products in the United States and sell their products within the United States and throughout the world. Today, US corporations are headquartered here but their products are made overseas, then they are shipped back here and sold to American consumers. We are good enough to buy their products but not good enough to make their products.

Protectionism, tariffs, duties, import quotas. These are all words that were used frequently by the founding fathers of this country. They new what was up, and how to combat it.

Everything is global now. We've lost our sovereignty.

I do know the Chamber of Commerce supports - Republicans, not Democrats

[ In Reply To ..]
And while we're on the subject of the Democratic candidates, guess what none of them are going to do? Touch our Social Security, Medicare, other social programs.

Noooo, that's the Republicans. Every single one of them is making noise about higher retirement age, cutting the "entitlement" that is Social Security (that is a misnomer, it is our money we saved through out lifetime and rich folks save a tiny portion of their SS and then get to stop paying in, sort of like taxes that way), and privatizing Medicare.

So are you all telling me, in this almost minimum wage profession, that the only reason to support Democrats is "getting free stuff" because that is ridiculous. Anything we're getting "free" (or actually deserved like Social Security) is pried out of the hands of those who have plenty, the same guys who offshored our jobs, stole our retirement plans, and stash all their cash overseas to avoid paying the same tax rate we have to pay.

Yes, the Chamber of Commerce is pure evil now, but they are definitely in the Republican column, along with all these Republican "value$."

Good luck if you vote them in, our retirement age will go up and our Social Security will be cut or privatized and forget about Medicare. Nope, I'm voting Democrat thank you very much to save the few things we have left for people of our income, which are Social Security, Medicare, and what is left of the safety net that is desperately needed for truly poor people, where we are all headed if Republicans get in.

Now as an adult I have not really one close friend, no one that I talk with on a regular basis. Am married and that is a close relationship, not lonely because I keep busy with my ...

How Do You Allow Your Dog To Do Their Business?Feb 16, 2010
So to those who do own dogs, do you walk them, tie them to a tree/lead or just let them wander around the yard (hopefully a fenced yard) on their own? While I was growing up, we raised 3 dogs and all lived to be from 14-17 yo. They were always walked several times a day no matter what the weather was. Never did we have them outside in a yard, nor did we have them tied to a tree or anything else. To my parents, tying them up and allowing them be alone outside was just unthinkable. Haitian Money For Earthquake Relief Was Funneled Through Friends Of The ClintonsAug 01, 2016
Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Hillary’s 2016 presidential campaign. By all accounts, the money and what it was meant to do never really reached the Haitian people. While the Clinton Foundation only puts 10% of its donations towards charity, the IHRC was a real racket for Clinton pals, 1% went towards Haitian groups and agencies on the ground. All that is transparent is that the money didn’t go to Haiti, beyond that the trail goes cold. The money for earthquake relief ...
