How do you allow your dog to do their business?

Posted: Feb 16, 2010

So to those who do own dogs, do you walk them, tie them to a tree/lead or just let them wander around the yard (hopefully a fenced yard) on their own?

While I was growing up, we raised 3 dogs and all lived to be from 14-17 yo. They were always walked several times a day no matter what the weather was. Never did we have them outside in a yard, nor did we have them tied to a tree or anything else. To my parents, tying them up and allowing them be alone outside was just unthinkable.

In two weeks, I will be picking up my new puppy! I have spent a few weeks of spare time reading up on dog rearing. As much as I have loved my past dogs and thought we raised them correctly, the amount of information I have found is pretty amazing. We weren't that far off on the decisions we made regarding how they were treated.

I have already interviewed a few people in my building who will be hired to watch over her and walk her while I am not at home for the first three months or until she gets used to her new enviroment.

When I am home of course, I will be walking her myself. I have even gone to the point of wallking blocks around my 'hood seeing where there are free green areas. Luckily, a large green area on the the water next to my building is being developed and it will have a dedicated dog run that I plan on becoming very familiar with.

So anyone care to tell me how you allow your dog to do it's thing outside? Interested on how others chose to raise their pets. Anyone?

Google it. It's truly the only way to go. At one point I was training 3 puppies under the age of 10 weeks and I had no accidents. Remember that dogs come from wolves and their natural environments are caves so it's in their DNA.

I had a chihuaha/mutt that I rescued from a dog pound when she was about years old and she lived for about 3 more years and finally had to be put down for congestive heart failure.

Anyway, we moved from California to Minnesota and when we went out the first time, she led the way, and ended up walking 3 blocks before she would "go" Not sure what led her to this place, but that was her usual every time we went out. She did not go in her own yard, so even when it was cold and snowy and nasty weather I would then drive her to her usual spot, and she would do her thing and get right back in the car. Go figure.

I did manage though in the winter right before bed to convince her to go out in her yard, but only if I shoveled down to the grass near a big tree, and carried her out and back. Also had a jacket and boots for her that I modified from a 0-3 month baby socks and figured how to make them stay on her feet. She really did not mind them much, and would stop dead in her tracks if she should actually lose one. I am sure the did not make her feet warm, but kept them from getting cold, and easier to wear than some of the stiff ones you get elsewhere. Just threw them out and got new ones when they were too dirty or used up.

She slept with us (although my husband had to be convinced, which did not take long with her cute way of begging), and she was on the couch with me with her own blanket. She was never in a kennel, even when I was gone for a short time, as I actually worked from home, so she stayed on the couch most of the time while I worked, then came in right at 3 p.m. like, "ok mom, now it is my turn." She even stayed in bed for the first 4 hours of my shift, so only had to worry about the second half and then she just slept on the couch.

Then when she would clean her bowl completely of her dog food, she would come and get me, bring me to the fridge, as she got a couple tablespoons of Dairy Queen ice cream when she did. How they think of these things, I have no idea. They are just too smart. Love them all.

I am now actually doing some doggie day care and overnight stays at my house so I get my dog fix and the owners know they are getting spoiled. Try to have only one at a time, and it is great. Love them all, but they do keep me busy as most of them are quite young and always on the go, but they get the idea that I am working, so just curl up on the floor next to me. And then we play after I get done.

She barks at the door and I let her out - sm

I go in the backyard with her on a couple of her business-doing rounds and we play fetch or chase each other for awhile.

Otherwise I let her go out by herself to do her thing and she barks when she wants to come back in.  Sometimes she is out there for just the amount of time it takes to get the job done, and sometimes she stays out there and sniffs around the bushes, chases birds and butterflies, barks at the neighbor's cat sitting on the back wall, or just lays on the patio in the warm sun.

I think it's fine for her to be out in the yard alone.  She is not neglected or lonely and when she barks at the door to come in, I let her in.  Even on her own she only stays out maybe 15 or 20 minutes then wants to come back in.  I have never, and never would, tie her to anything.

Oh, and I try to walk her at least once a day... sometimes twice, time and weather permitting... but some days we don't get a walk in at all and that's okay too.

nudges the door handle with his nose (he's really tall). We have an acre with part of it fenced in for the 'little back yard' and then the un-fenced 'way back' with a creek. He loves to swim and goes there and runs and plays when we go out in the 'way back.'

One trick I did learn some years back with a dog I had was to tie some jingle bells on a leather string and tie it to the doorknob. It is a Pavlovian kind of thing wherein the bells ring when the door is opened and the dog learns to ring the bells. This keeps the dog from scratching the door or the door frame, but still can alert the owner if he wants to go outside. It worked like a dream with my smaller dog.

Good luck!! You sound like you will be a wonderful puppy momma!!

puppy - no poo pls

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a very large, fenced yard with extra doggy escape-proof gates. My small dog does his thing in the yard in one area. When he was young, we took him to that spot often and left some doggy droppings in that spot so he would learn that was where the poo goes. On a very rare occasion he poos outside the spot, but not enough that I'd consider it a problem. We clean the yard every other day, because he is a very small dog (yorkie poo) and makes small poo. It's sufficient.

When he is walked he NEVER poos! I've always taken a bag with me (PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR DOGS PPL!!), but he prefers to come home and poo in the privacy of his own yard, in his poo place.

He was never crated when he was young. He turned out to train very, very easily and very quickly. He's so cute when he asks to go out, he comes to us and looks right at us and gives a very soft, firm "woof" and walks to the door!

Happy trails and congrats on the pup! May you have a long, happy life together!

potty time - pup

My dog is a 2-year-old German Shepard/Husky pup that we have had since she was born. We do not have a fenced yard. We just let her out into the yard and she stays in the yard. She knows exactly where "her yard" boundaries are and very rarely crosses them. She is in a crate when we leave. Since I work 2nd shift at a hospital and my husband works 1st shift, someone is generally always home with her and she gets let out regularly. My husband usually takes her on his nightly run as well for exercise and I will take her for a walk during the day. She does not potty when she is walked though. She only will go in "her yard." If she does ever toe the line and try to head into our neighbors yard, all we have to say is "get back in your own yard" and she will. She will stay in the yard whether we are outside with her or not but I generally keep an eye on her through the window when she is out. She is the greatest dog ever!

I saw some comments on the board recently about the strangulation of business through regulation.  It's a subject I've always been fascinated by because of its vast complexity, politicization and above all a complete lack of named regulations.  It's so rare that any politician right or left ever names an individual regulation they don't like.  They are always referred to in bulk: "Those darn regulations are killing American jobs."  Certainly some are point ...

How Much Does A Business Have To Make Before It Does Not Have To Pay TaxesApr 05, 2011
We've been asking the wrong question. My family has a business. We hire people, so according to the current standards, we should not have to pay taxes. We are creating jobs. However, we have not yet reached that magic number. It's  higher than most of you think. You have to make more than a million a year, much more than that probably, before you get to stop paying taxes. Before you get to that point, you get to save money in other ways. I paid cash for my house. I pay cash for ...

Trump Bad For Local BusinessFeb 20, 2017
For some of the businesses and government agencies that surround President Trump’s “Winter White House,” the effects of his frequent weekend getaways to Mar-a-Lago can best be told in numbers. $200,000 in lost fuel sales at a large local airport in a single four-day visit this month. 75 no-shows at a new restaurant in just one night. $60,000 a day to pay overtime to sheriff’s deputies who guard the many closed roads, a tab that is about $1.5 million over all ...
