HOBBY = BUSINESS

Posted: Mar 30, 2011

I read the post below about the lady whose family cook book is getting published, and also once in a while see someone posting their stuff on Esty.  That's amazing.

I was wondering if anyone has taken a hobby and turned it into a lucrative side job?  I am barely making ends meet!  As soon as I get my check it's gone.  Thank goodness for Angelfood ministries!

I can do bead work, crochet, knit and sew.  I can draw and know how to can fruits, but there just isn't much of an interest for home made products.  I do my own flower arrangements from my garden and I think their pretty... :)

If someone started a business (like office cleaning, housekeeping,  dog walking...) how did you do it?

I don't have but a high school education, am in my mid 60's and not in tip top health, but there has GOT to be some little thing out there!  clerical positions that I have applied for I guess see only an aging lady!   I have a reliable car, am a pretty smart cookie.

I just want to avoid moving in with my daughter for as long as possible and to do that I have to remain financially independent.

I'd just like to supplement my income.  I'd like to hear some stories or suggestions.  Thanks ladies!

Can you teach it?

I don't, but my aunt does - anonymoose

My aunt is a professional baker. She will have groups (4 or less) come to her tiny kitchen and for a fee she teaches them how to make a pie. She also will teach at the local college. My best friend is a potter and she teaches at the local community college.

I don't know where you are located but I think there is a great interest in home made products (or maybe its just me). I'd love to learn how to crochet (my mom, God rest her soul, tried to teach me but I never got the hang of it). I would pay to learn.

Maybe if you have a local newspaper you could put an ad in offering classes in your home. Like maybe a knitting or crochet group or something that you could do pretty easy and see how it goes.

I would contact your local community colleges and find out what it would take and if there is an interest. When I lived in another area I took quilting classes and every once in awhile ladies would come in and teach us different things. Maybe hobby shops. I myself would love to open a home bakery business. My DH tells me my muffins are out of this world, so I myself am looking into how to begin a home baking business.

Wish you all the luck. Hope you are very successful. Sounds like you have so many talents.

Flower arrangements - cindy

You said you make flower arrangements from flowers from your garden. Do several arrangements and take photos to make a little 'portfolio' of your work and go around to local florists to see if you could get a part time position doing flower arrangements or even on an as needed basis. You can make some decent extra money doing flower arrangements. Even if you could get your foot in the door at a florist doing anything like the cash register, dusting, etc., then you can show them your skills and watch and learn from them and start doing some arrangements. Wish you luck!

I would like to do something, too, but can't come up with any ideas. - Backwards Typist

I used to crochet but had to give it up because problems with my hands.

I love to make gourmet meals, bake cakes and pies, make candy, and bake bread, but don't want the hassle of the health department and IRS in my life.

I love to garden but never had the time, but my favorite is herb gardening. Had great success last year but planted too late (due to the job) to make any money with it. I plan to try again this year if spring ever comes.

Can you possibly take people to Dr. appointments, etc.? How about a personal shopper or even just delivering groceries for shut-ins and/or elderly people? These are a couple ideas I've been rolling around in my head.

Thought about dog walker, too, but after sitting on my butt for years, I don't have the gumption for long walks. Even thought about become a dog masseuse (sp). My dog loves when I give her massages, but there again, the problems with the hands and I can only do it for a couple minutes.

I bake cheesecakes and sell them for 30 bucks. People love homemade stuff! - Sheila

NY cheesecakes are great, but mine are better!

I sat down and decided what it is that I do best; cook and can fruits and veggies, even make pickles and pickled beets and okra.

I put an ad in the local paper and craigslist and have got some orders. Now that I have the orders I know I can make as much as is ordered so I don't have an over abundance sitting at home!
It's a start, some extra cash. A nice German lady said that if she liked my beets she'd order a lot for her VFW's German Dinner night!

Also, a man that owns a pet store said if I can make "all natural" dog biscuits, he'd buy them weekly!. I'm going to start getting recipes and investigating ingredients.

thanks for the support and help from all. I don't feel like a dud that never learned how to do anything anymore. I mean, transcribing is really ALL I have ever done! (Other than domestic duties.)

Congrats Mattie - I'm so happy for you - anonymoose

With all your talents "dud" would be the farthest word from my mind. Wish you lived close by. You sound like a wonderful person and would be great company. I love the all natural dog biscuit idea.

Wish you all the best. I'm glad you found a way to market your home goodies.

I don't know how you would get contacts but...(sm) - Yochana

I have heard of people taking elderly people that cannot drive to get their groceries, or to their different appointments (doctor, beauty, etc.)

Supreme Court states corporations cannot be required to provide contraception coverage.  YES!!!!  The protests outside are all young people and they act like the ruling would deny birth control for everyone. When are these kids going to get an education? They want it, they can pay for it just like we used to have to pay for it. I'm so glad. The government does not have the right to force us to pay for contraceptives, especially those that are no longer able to have kids or e ...

Hobby Lobby . . . AgainJul 29, 2014
What is it exactly that HL wants?  Claim they cannot cover certain BC because they cause abortions, now they fire a lady because she is pregnant.  HL is religiousing itself into a corner from which they will never be able to get out.   If real people were not affected by their absurdity, it would be downright funny, but sadly real people are affected.  For the sake of the employee I do hope this is an allegation and that she has not been fired for being pregnant, but if ...

Boycott Hobby Lobby?Sep 21, 2012
So, this company is owned and operated by people who have certain beliefs regarding the Obamacare mandate regarding abortion - and filed suit to be granted the same exemption that has already been granted to a Catholic organization.  Howls of protest.  Calls for boycott.  Not me! First, I'm not stupid enough to step on my own face if I can help it.  HL has some great stuff that I can't find elsewhere, or for the price.  Second, I'm not stupid enough to ...

Hobby Lobby StoresJul 01, 2014
Have you noticed when you are in a Hobby Lobby store (for those who have actually spent time in one), they play Christian music over their music system?  I find it very soothing and often enjoy it so much that I have bought several of the CDs they are playing.  This is still a free country - just as we are free to get out of transcription and find another line of work, so the employee of Hobby Lobby is free to find another craft store or another line of work. This is a free count ...

Silly Old Lady Hobby QuestionJun 30, 2013
Some time ago I asked about making jewelry and am going to try to do learn to do that when our community ed classes start up again in the fall. In the meantime, I have a funny question. (Maybe I am going into second childhood.) Do any of you draw or paint? I love to sketch and I also like the Dover coloring books, which are quite detailed and good for adults. Does anyone else on here like to draw/color? ...

The Big Picture Regarding The Hobby Lobby DecisionJul 01, 2014
I think to a lot of people, the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case is largely about an overhaul of corporations' rights to control employees, basically a first step to more control over their lives.  Sure, it's about the birth control issue, but the "big picture" about the decision is this opening of the door to who knows what is next from big business?  The same people who are saying they don't want government to come between people and their doctor s ...

How Do You Allow Your Dog To Do Their Business?Feb 16, 2010
So to those who do own dogs, do you walk them, tie them to a tree/lead or just let them wander around the yard (hopefully a fenced yard) on their own? While I was growing up, we raised 3 dogs and all lived to be from 14-17 yo. They were always walked several times a day no matter what the weather was. Never did we have them outside in a yard, nor did we have them tied to a tree or anything else. To my parents, tying them up and allowing them be alone outside was just unthinkable. In two weeks, ...

How Trump is Draining the Swamp Chaos or strategy? This Might Explain a Lot of Things Going on at The White House "Apparently, liberals and never-Trumpers are so isolated in their political circles that they have no concept how things work in the real world of business and corporate America. Regulations And BusinessOct 24, 2012
I saw some comments on the board recently about the strangulation of business through regulation.  It's a subject I've always been fascinated by because of its vast complexity, politicization and above all a complete lack of named regulations.  It's so rare that any politician right or left ever names an individual regulation they don't like.  They are always referred to in bulk: "Those darn regulations are killing American jobs."  Certainly some are point ...

How Much Does A Business Have To Make Before It Does Not Have To Pay TaxesApr 05, 2011
We've been asking the wrong question. My family has a business. We hire people, so according to the current standards, we should not have to pay taxes. We are creating jobs. However, we have not yet reached that magic number. It's  higher than most of you think. You have to make more than a million a year, much more than that probably, before you get to stop paying taxes. Before you get to that point, you get to save money in other ways. I paid cash for my house. I pay cash for ...

Trump Bad For Local BusinessFeb 20, 2017
For some of the businesses and government agencies that surround President Trump’s “Winter White House,” the effects of his frequent weekend getaways to Mar-a-Lago can best be told in numbers. $200,000 in lost fuel sales at a large local airport in a single four-day visit this month. 75 no-shows at a new restaurant in just one night. $60,000 a day to pay overtime to sheriff’s deputies who guard the many closed roads, a tab that is about $1.5 million over all ...

Democrats Are The Best Friends Big Business Every Had.Oct 13, 2015
