Husbands best friends son is turning 2. We need gift ideas.

This friends family has always treated my husband like one of their own, so it is sort of like an uncle finding a gift for his nephew. It has been 30 years since we had a 2 year old so we are feeling challenged about what to get. This is family #2 for the dad and mom who are ages 51 and 49 and both have children out of college. He is an only child of two avid shopaholics, so needless to say he has been indulged and spoiled since day one. What do you get for the 2-year-old who has everything under the sun already? Budget is around $50 but can flex to some degree. Please help. We are clueless.

I would find out what kinds of shows he watches, like Diego, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, etc. Does he like Little People or dinosaurs. He is kind of borderline on some of those things with age but will be moving up with toys soon. Also, I love books and love them for my kids. There is a dinosaur series that I have always been fond of by Jane Yolen and Mark Teague. Lots in the series, and they are very fun to read.

Two-year-olds have the attention span of about 30 seconds, so until they are ready to settle down, I always got Treasury Bonds so the parents could put it away and cash them at a later time. When my nephews turned 4 or 5, gifts were much for fun for everyone. When they turned that age, I found out what the latest "cool" thing was for kids, and dinosaur stuff ruled at that time for several years, so it was always something dinosaur for their birthdays and Christmas.

Really, a 2-year-old doesn't know what's going. When he's 3 or 4 or more, he'll have fun opening presents and playing with them.

Agree with books as a gift. My son loved Duplo (sp?)blocks - I called them "beginner Legos." Try to shop at a store that will give a gift receipt, just in case. LOL

I would like to get a friend's 6-year-old daughter something, but their house is small, and the grandparents tend to give quite a bit. Any ideas that will not cause more clutter? I got this from another board and it was actually funny to read. When we got married 18 years ago we got a plunger from my mom's friend thou she did get us another gift also that one was just funny. I had ordered 2 customized luggage tags from Zazzle.com. The printed image is in between 2 pieces of acrylic.
