Leg swelling any ideas?
Posted: Jul 30, 2013
So left leg starts swelling..Go to doc, rule out DVT said my valves are bad. His answer, take a baby aspirin a day (I look like I have been in a fight Im so bruised) and yesterday at end of shift my leg is tight swollen and my foot. Of course I elevated it and this morning it is better (not totally down) but I know by end of shift it will be bad again. Anyone have any ideas. Personally I would rather have it fixed then deal with this, I have 3 more years to work at this job and I'm only 50.;
Exact same problem and also ruled out for DVT. - Deb

I have to take lots of breaks and walk around as much as possible, but it doesn't help much by the end of the week.

I have the same issue. It is a circulation problem. Doctor told me to get compression hose and wear them which help. It is sitting here at computer with legs dangling. I even try elevating them on CPU and alternating them. I even take a fluid pill in with my BP med. If I stay off of them they go back to normal. I think that it comes with our job and getting older too. I am 63 and have been doing this for 34 years, work PT now. Go the a store that sells compression hose and let them measure you as there are diff compression strength sizes. Hope this helps. I have also been tested for DVT and it was negative.

I have been putting mine on the CPU also,,great minds think alike huh? Brand new diagnosis, making an appointment to go back to doctor. I have been wrapping with an ACE bandage lately, tighter on the foot and lesser as you go..Will check the compression stockings thanks a million. This job is killing me, literally,,So close to retirement I just need a couple more years.

Get some compression socks. They are the best thing that happened to me. I have incompetent perforator veins. Make sure to get medical quality ones-not cheap ones.

and PCP recently asked me about possibly wearing the hose. I know nothing about either one. One thing I do know is I have a lot of leg aching at night now, not during the day but it wakes me at night sometimes. I do have some ankle swelling sometimes during the day but not every day with that. How do the socks help out? I have appt with vascular person this month because wanted to get checked out.

Magnesium helps a lot - doctor told me that it is difficult to measure magnesium in the blood, but I found that when I started taking it, it helped significantly. But truly, the only thing that really helped was changing jobs so that I am not at the computer all day. Even now that my job involves more walking though, I still have to take magnesium, and sometimes even Lasix. For some reason every time I eat spinach, my leg swelling goes away - not sure why, need to research that. Also the amino acid albumin helps keep your fluids in your blood vessels instead of leaking into your tissues. Foods with higher albumin like chicken, eggs, beef, tuna, etc are helpful.

Had to look up the spinach and leg swelling connection. Apparently it is very high in potassium. If you do a search on "spinach for leg swelling" it comes up with a lot of articles saying that if you have too much sodium, potassium will help balance it out. So that must be why (raw) spinach helps. I know you have a valve issue and so do I, but anything we can do to help it is a good thing. Best wishes to you.
Thank you for the info - sm

I was waiting for my day off to start looking. I was told by someone else about potassium, I take vitamins, but have been noticing leg cramps recently too. And I was thinking along the sodium lines, also. Recently started using Atkins frozen meals once a day so I could work though my meal time and they are loaded with sodium. Time to get my diet back to pure healthy again.

That's really cool about the albumin, I did notice my leg swelling wasn't as bad when I went on Atkins but didn't realize it had anything to do with it. Lots more protein I guess. I wear knee-high compression stockings sometimes too if it's really bad and lay off the salt, no more than 1500 mg most days.

Right Leg SwellingFeb 28, 2016My poor leg has taken a beating over the years. In 2004 I had the right knee scoped and a bunch of things were wrong with it. Ankle/foot SwellingAug 10, 2011For the 2nd time in 2 weeks I have had extreme foot and ankle swellling. Funny enough it has happened exactly a week from the first episode. Last week, I went to the doctor and got some Lasix and even after taking 1/2-1 tablet per day of this, my feet are still swollen 3+. It is very uncomfortable and unnerving. Bilateral Wrist Pain And SwellingNov 10, 2010Okay, I've been doing MT work for about 25 years and never had much of a problem with my wrists that a little R&R didn't fix.

Looking For Some Snack IdeasMay 03, 2014I'm sick of candy, chips and peanuts. I know of apples, grapes etc. I go online to look up healthy snacks and get the usual 3 pretzels wrapped in one piece of proscutto with a pretty toothpick sticking out of it (something like that), or they have a piece of weird bread topped with strawberries drizzled with some white stuff (probably yogurt)...blek! Out Of School Ideas For Summer?May 22, 2013Hi all,
My son's last day of school is today. Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I don't want video games and/or TV watching to be the main ingredient of his summer days. We don't have any kids in the area his age to play with, and he is the only one at home anymore so no siblings to play with. He is 10 and it is hard to keep him from getting bored and wanting to "veg" all day.
Any ideas appreciated ...
