need help with volunteer ideas

My dental hygienest and I decided to do 1 random act of kidness each month, but it cannot be donate money somewhere. It actually has to be to do something, like work in the soup kitchen, or volunteer at the pet shelter to walk dogs or clean cages.

Can anyone post some creative ideas to get us going? Thanks in advance.

Maybe you can just sit with someone in a nursing home that does not get visitors or maybe in an elementry classroom to read with the children. What you are doing is a great idea.

On garbage day in my neighborhood when I walk my do I take a garbage bag and pick up trash on the side of the road and throw it in mine or someone else’s trash can.

The state where I live keeps getting hit over and over again by tornados. I am a couponer and I load up on free (or near-free) things that I can donate: oral care products, cleaning products, paper products, food products, personal hygiene products. Heck, I even got denture adhesive for free with coupons. It makes me feel good to be able to put together a care package at the drop of a hat to take to someone in need. Last summer, I met a women living in my apartment complex who was living here while her home was being rebuilt after a tornado. I brought her into my home to let her choose what she wanted directly from my (very small for a single person) stockpile.

I really applaud what you are trying to do.

Read to a group of kids at the library or in an elementary school or daycare. Volunteer to help a teacher -- they always need help in classrooms (not necessarily working directly with the kids either -- cutting things out, putting together bulletin boards, making copies, etc.)

I've always wanted to volunteer at a hospital to rock the babies in the nursery, especially NICU where the parents need a break :-)

If you are crafty, volunteer to make items for someone -- my grandmother-in-law knitted baby hats and booties for years & gave them to her local hospital for the newborns. Make items for the ER or EMS service to give to children they come in contact with.

Volunteer at the library.

I think random acts of kindness can also be done for individuals you meet in your everyday activities -- holding doors open, helping someone pick up something they've dropped, letting someone in front of you in line at the store, picking the neighbor's paper up off the drive and taking it to their door, shoveling their walk when you do yours, offering to pick up things from the store for a housebound neighbor or offering to give them a ride to appointments, etc. -- and personally I think those actions sometimes speak the loudest.

Just wondering what everyone uses as stocking stuffers besides the usual fruits and nuts. I read another post under the DH/SO post about the sweet gifts in a stocking so just thought we could share some tips too. I usually just fill ours with the usual: Fruits, nuts, chocolates, batteries to accompany gifts, candies. So left leg starts swelling..Go to doc, rule out DVT said my valves are bad. His answer, take a baby aspirin a day (I look like I have been in a fight Im so bruised) and yesterday at end of shift my leg is tight swollen and my foot. My significant other is forever sleeping on the sofa because he works second shift and it looks bad. You cant reverse the cushions on this one and those throw over things keep falling down. I'm sick of candy, chips and peanuts. I know of apples, grapes etc. I go online to look up healthy snacks and get the usual 3 pretzels wrapped in one piece of proscutto with a pretty toothpick sticking out of it (something like that), or they have a piece of weird bread topped with strawberries drizzled with some white stuff (probably yogurt)...blek! One is for a dear friend of mine that passed away this week after a long courageous battle with cancer. She has left behind a husband and 2 teenage sons. Hi all, My son's last day of school is today. Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I would like to use blackstrap molasses (organic, unsulphured) for its potassium content, but other than putting it on oatmeal and cereal, I am not sure what to use it with. My grandson is 10, and a very smart young man. All he is into is computer games, iPad, etc. He will watch a movie on TV if it is something he is interested in, or go to the movies with us when he visits. Besides that, what do we do?
