Swelling of fingers and feet......

Anyone else get this? My hands are swollen so badly right now that I had to stop working because it's taking me forever to type.

Have you checked your blood pressure lately? - L

Edema is sometimes caused by elevated blood pressure.
Yes, bp is fine. - Stumped

No medical problems at all so I have no idea why it does this.

You might need thyroid checked. You need to get these symptoms checked out. Of course if you go to a doctor like my mom had, he laughed (I should have said yelled at me for disturbing him at the office) when I suggested she had heart failure because she was so swollen. I got the last laugh and an apology from the doctor.
Right. It's water retention that could be caused - water

by hormones, heart, too much fluid intake, etc....check it out.

Yes, it does sound like water retention. It's possible you are not drinking enough water, or maybe eating too much salt. Hopefully you are not taking water pills as these can make water retention worse.

What the doc said - before I tell you though, please remember that this is ONLY my case, and you NEED to go to a doc yourself, okay? Anyway, I was having intermittent swelling of my hands and both of my legs were swollen, sometime into the thigh and also weeping sometimes. Since I have already had open-heart surgery as a kid and my mother has RA, I wasn't going to play with this - the doc ran tests and they all came back relatively okay. Then he asked me if, by any chance, I ate a lot of licorice - as it happened, I was on a Pull 'N Peel kick that month and was downing quite a bit while tscribing!! Cut out the licorice and guess what? Swelling went away!!! Again - please see a doc even if you are a licorice demon, please.

My knuckles are severely swollen and painful today and I'm sure it's because of the blizzard we are getting. I have a family history of both osteo *and* rheumatic arthritis - osteo in both parents and all grandparents, rheumatoid in my dad's mom who unfortunately died when I was 7 because they didn't know very well how to treat SLE and rheumatoid arthritis.
I don't get swelling in my feet, though. Have you taken a good look at your calves? Are they the same size bilaterally? Just one enlarged calf could mean a DVT. Are you calves soft and nontender? If they don't look symmetrical, measure them, and if they're difference sizes, call your doctor or the ER. It could be a DVT. It could also be from you sitting so much. I'm guilty of sitting for 4-5 hours at a time before getting up to stretch, and I pay for it, esp. in my knees. Try propping one of your feet up for awhile, then switch to the other. Lower your salt intake. I use my CPU from my computer to prop up my food when I broke it and now just do it now and again to relieve the knee pain I get from sitting so long. Keep in mind, it's not that easy to learn to use the foot pedal with my other foot.
Also, re the edema in your feet, have you been to the doc lately and had your BP checked?
Even when my hands hurt the most, I don't have issues with being unable to type. It's my brain that causes me bad typing days and slow fingers for some reason.
Hope you're feeling better soon, and I think it would be an idea to call your doc on Monday and make an appt. Remember, this advice is not coming from a doctor, only someone with extensive MT experience.
Sorry, this is late, but it could also be anemia. - LaurieG.

I had a good friend with celiac disease (didn't know about it at the time), but she would often get swelling in her feet while sitting at her desk. Turned out to be anemia. She developed the celiac disease about a year later.

Onion Fingers SmellDec 15, 2014 Wish we had a food board, because on the gab board things get kind of heavy, but for anyone interested: Hubby and I chop onions all the time and have trouble removing the smell from our fingers, no matter what we do with soap and water. Well, I had read somewhere that putting salt on your hands/fingers and mixing with water to make a coarse paste works. And darn it, it works. It's not perfect, because the onion smell gets under the nails, but it sure takes the edge off.

Well, most of you know I spent the entire summer sick, starting out with a UTI that I let go for 10 days (living off of OTC Pyridium) until I was peeing sheer blood. I became septic. Anyway 9 organ systems were involved. I got better, broke my foot. One of my teeth abscessed a couple of weeks ago and the root canal was a piece of cake compared to everything else.

In all honesty though, congress does have to own up to some of the blame here. However, I don't truly believe Obama blames congress.
