Ideas on what to do with leftover hot dog rolls

Posted: May 31, 2011

When we have hot dogs there are always buns left over.  Tried grilling them for toast.  Didn't taste so good.  Tried under the broiler and they burned.  Tried squooshing them and put them in the toaster, tasted like squooshed bread :-)  I hate to throw them out.  Any suggestions (besides get more hot dogs) :-)

butter them up good and put them on electric skillet and then when toasty, load them with garlic salt and serve with spaghetti.

Or, toast them under the broiler (doing both sides) and then crumble into French Onion soup.

Or, gently cut the outer part of bun off. Then, butter the inside part, and make a grilled cheese out of them. Put the cut off outside on the inside with the cheese.

Or, just use the buns to make mini sub sandwiches for the kids, or pile on lettuce and tuna for a tuna salad sub.

I toast them and while they're toasting, I melt some butter and put in garlic powder, stir the mixture, and when the buns are done toasting, pour the butter-garlic powder on the buns ... voila ... instant garlic toast!

Dry them out, crumble them (use rolling pin) and store them to use in recipes that call for bread crumbs such as meat loaf, stuffed bell peppers, etc. The other ideas sound good too, especially the garlic toast :-)

I freeze them for the next time we have hotdogs - mh

Tear them up, mix egg, milk, sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon and pour over them. Dot with butter and bake. Add raisins or maybe chopped apple if you have them.

we make meatball subs or mini subs, like - someone already said

My personal favorite with hotdog or hamburger buns are toasting them slightly with a brushing of butter and making a delicious spicy chuncky tuna and egg salad sandwich. I love having crust all around the bread!

You can use mostly any kind of bread for sandwiches, making bread crumbs, toasting. My grandson LOVES peanut butter, and banana sandwiches on hot dog buns. (Elvis style...grilled!)

Sloppy Joes - JR

You can use them for Sloppy Joes, as you would a burger or sandwich bun. Maybe melt a little American cheese on top.

Breadcrumbs - sm

Lay them out until they get hard, then crush them with a rolling pin, put them in a baggie, and freeze.

Let the buns dry out on the counter; place in a Zip-Loc bag and seal; roll with a rolling pin until crumbs; add seasonings of your choice and shake the bag. Add seasoned crumbs to raw beef for hamburgers (or meatloaf) the next time you grill.

Need Help With Recipe - Leftover Ingredients From LasagneDec 15, 2011
I have a lot of mozarella, jack, and ricotta cheese and spaghetti sauce.  I was thinking of shreeding all the cheeses and adding some frozen (thawed and drained) spinach in it with some crushed garlc and basil, wrap in lasagne noodles and cover with pasta sauce.  Do you think this would be bland or taste good.  Is there anything else you could think of that would make this taste good.  Not using meat this time like I do in my lasgne, just the noodles, cheese and spinach, but ...

Unique Turkey/Stuffing LeftoverNov 13, 2012
Okay, so I'm posting ahead of time, but I just saw something interesting on the show "The Chew," the food talk show with Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Daphne (Dr. Oz's daughter) and Carla. They took leftover stuffing and turkey, stuffed it in red peppers and baked it, then threw gruyere cheese on top and broiled it till cheese was melted.  They cut the bottoms off the peppers just enough so there was no hole, but the pepper could stand up in a baking dish. I thought that sou ...

Comcast Rolls Over For Hillary...Oct 09, 2015
hosted a $2,700-a-plate fundraiser for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. On the first weekend in October, the NBC Universal in-kind contributions really kicked in: a star turn on "Saturday Night Live," a Sunday morning interview with Rev. Al Sharpton, and a Monday town hall meeting on the "Today" program. The Daily Beast was blunt in a headline: "'Saturday Night Live' Premiere Basically a Hillary Clinton Campaign Ad." Writer Kevin Fallon documented how the aid and comf ...

Type Of Rolls/bread Do You Serve At Thanksgiving?Nov 24, 2009
I prefer very soft rolls.  I like a certain type from the store that are just cheap little things but they are so good. (probably really bad for me but it's Thanksgiving after all).  I also like Costco's rolls, but the bag is so big.  I've made Pillsbury cresent rolls before but don't want to use the oven any more than I have to.  Do you make your own bisquits, do you use Pillsbury, frozen or just buy off the shelf?  Do you only serve one type? ...

Putin Steam Rolls Over The Middle East While Obama Spouts Platitudes (sm)Oct 01, 2015
Meanwhile, “chanting ‘Death to America’ does not create jobs,” Obama continued, apparently unaware that no one who spends their time chanting “Death to America,” painting intricate murals of a skull-faced, razor-clawed Lady Liberty, or enthusiastically burning effigies actually cares about working their way up the career ladder. Now that I think about it, you know what else doesn’t create jobs? Bombing Syria! Quick, somebody tell Vladimir Putin. What on ...

Stocking Ideas......Dec 20, 2010
Just wondering what everyone uses as stocking stuffers besides the usual fruits and nuts.  I read another post under the DH/SO post about the sweet gifts in a stocking so just thought we could share some tips too.  I usually just fill ours with the usual:  Fruits, nuts, chocolates, batteries to accompany gifts, candies.  My 18-yo informed me that bobby pins would make great stocking stuffers so I might add that this year! I also am thinking of playing a trick on my kiddos, ...

Out Of School Ideas For Summer?May 22, 2013
Hi all, My son's last day of school is today.  Looking for some fun, inexpensive ideas to keep him busy at home and for both of us when we can be on the go! I don't want video games and/or TV watching to be the main ingredient of his summer days. I finally was able to decide on and buy a tapestry, peace sign with suns and it looks adorable! Large enough to cover the top and hang down on the front. Any Ideas For Using Blackstrap Molasses?Sep 07, 2013
I would like to use blackstrap molasses (organic, unsulphured) for its potassium content, but other than putting it on oatmeal and cereal, I am not sure what to use it with. Would like to avoid baking it in cookies and breads as I want to watch the calorie count. Tried mixing it with water, but did not like it. I have just been diagnosed with hypertension and put on HCTZ. Doc said it is possible that with losing 5 lbs and diet modification, the HCTZ could be stopped. I am trying to use the D ...
