Decorating ideas updated

Posted: May 28, 2013

Recently inquired about how to make an old chest of drawers presentable for a girl's bedroom and thanks for the ideas. I finally was able to decide on and buy a tapestry, peace sign with suns and it looks adorable! Large enough to cover the top and hang down on the front. I spent the holiday yesterday painting a night stand (well actually 2) for the bedroom, bought from someone on Craigslist for $10.00 and then being as 1 was brown and 1 was blue and they matched in dimensions, got some semi-gloss blue paint and got that done with 1 coat remaining to be done. Now, for the tops of those. I bought some lamps but for a young girl (10) any other items to have for the end table? I really appreciate all the input and ideas here. ;

Music box, potpourri (no candles) - Trinket boxes

Besides what is mentioned, mini teddy-bear, something like that would be cute. If she's a tomboy, you'd have to adjust for that.

Not tomboy, frilly girl that likes girly stuff - Precious

Your suggestions are most appreciated.

Inexpensive picture frames - anon

can be decorated using beads, ribbons, seashells, etc. The trinket boxes can be made to match.

Wonderful! Wish I had some imagination - about things to fix up

like these ideas. My mind is just running thinking about visiting Michael's real soon!

Small pics of family - friends, etc. Anyone she feels close to-nm

Why not let her use her own stuff? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Doesn't this child have any toys or belongings? Why not just let her decorate herself?

Does she have own belongings? No as when you - are an orphan, don't have much

[ In Reply To ..]
but thanks for your idea anyway.

Don't understand why you had to be so - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
rude in your reply. I'm not the person who gave the suggestion of using her own stuff, but where did you ever say that she was an orphan? You never mentioned that before now.

You never said orphan - see msg pls

[ In Reply To ..]
Not sure if poster was rude or not---hard to tell on posts sometimes. She may have just been trying to let us know in one eye-shot.

Anyway, nobody here had a clue as to whether this was someone you were adopting, a niece or granddaughter visiting for the summer, temporary fostering, etc.
I did not know you had to be specific as to a relationship - a girl is a girl is a girl
[ In Reply To ..]
I gave her age, gave information about her being girly and said trying to get ideas about a room. Did not know I had to be any more specific than what I was. Natural daughter, adopted daughter, granddaughter- the difference here is ? This place could be a nice place to go to get ideas from others but instead it turns out to be a place to accuse people of being rude? Well, at least some were helpful and I made my way to the store today, bought frames and decorative things to glue on them. I appreciate the people who try to help out.
Well - see msg pls

What happened was this: Someone thought your comment was a little sharp as to why she wouldn't have her own things. We had no clue she didn't have her own things. You kind of came across as "why would someone orphaned have their own things?" A bit condescending. If we had known she was orphaned, we might have not suggested having her own things. FYI: Orphaned children sometimes do have their own things, like if she was a niece of yours and her parents died.
And FYI people in this state in DFACs - and have no home, i.e. orphaned
[ In Reply To ..]
are not even allowed a suitcase to travel back and forth between foster homes, they carry plastic garbage bags for their things. I guess no one was interested in telling me the difference it would have made had it been my birth daughter versus adopted daughter versus granddaughter. I see no difference myself but guess my question not able to be answered.
what you are saying makes no sense - adoptive mother
[ In Reply To ..]
Isn't this redecorating for the two young girls (not related to you) who are visiting from another state because you are like their fairy godmother?

Orphaned children are not shuttled back and forth the way you are talking. IF that was the case, you would already have things in place as taught to you by the foster care programs through which you must be certified and approved by DCFS.

You are right that it should not matter to us one iotta that you take other people's kids and re-decorate furniture for them. Best of luck with that.
Do not know what you are talking about, 2 girls? - Precious
[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry but just do not know where you get 2 girls from another state? Take other's children? Where do you get your comments from? This really is not making any sense to me. Have not done foster care ever but do know from a friend whose sister used to do this what their child did between foster homes, that being not even having a suitcase but rather plastic bags.
I agree with you, adoptive mother - see msg

It sounds exactly like the "two young girls" posts from before. How to prepare a room for girls.

These posts have the same weird quality about them. This started off kind of normal with questions about redecorating, there were objections to the suggestions, followed by defensive rudeness. The minute someone asks about the girl(s), the OP's language structure begins to get a little odd.

I agree that "orphan" is a weird term. People don't just get orphans without knowing what to do with them.

Sounds like the same person to me, and I still think it sounds bizarre to the point of being unbalanced. If I could figure out where the posts were coming from, I would report it to someone.
This is the original poster and if you are that concerned - then I would suggest maybe
[ In Reply To ..]
contacting the monitor and maybe you could tell them your concerns, you think I am some bizarre person maybe out to hurt a kid? Can you even stop and think about how you sound saying that? To even suggest that I have anything but the upmost integreity about my life is just beyond my imagination. I have never ever done anything in my entire life to be anything but nice to others and now this? This board for whatever reason has dropped down to the very low of lows. I hear about the school kids being bullied but grown women mostly doing it? What is wrong with you to make you think so badly of others? Has your life been that bad that you think all others are up to no good? I did not ask about how to care for a child. I asked about decorating for a little girl and that sounds unbalanced to you? Do you know how your posts sounds to me?? Think about it. All the bullying posting on here, talk to one another if that makes you feel better but I am no longer trying to gain the least bit of information here, wrong place.
Interesting - see msg please

I sort of thought something was weird. There was a poster who came on a while back wondering about how to plan for a girl or 2 girls' arrival in terms of hobbies and foods for what we assumed was for a summer break. The OP hadn't really responded to many suggestions on snacks and hobbies to have set up. There was also a similar note a bit later on, which I don't remember specifically, but again crafts/food were mentioned, but the OP of that note never came back to thank or give more infor.

Now, this with the decorating thing and no clearer info as to if the girl is visiting for a couple of weeks, or being adopted or what.

Let us be a lesson. Respond when we respond. Don't come back out of the blue.

Not the same person so was not understanding - your post-NM

Also, the OP of that thread used P - as her alias. Hmmm. NM

Do not want to be harsh - but...

[ In Reply To ..]
It's a tad suspicious. Anyway, I hope the OP feels she got some good ideas.

Sorry she was so sensitive, though, when people offered suggestions that didn't fit into her mold--the mold she never shared with us.

If she is taking a kid in out of the goodness of her heart, we should applaud her.

Stocking Ideas......Dec 20, 2010
Just wondering what everyone uses as stocking stuffers besides the usual fruits and nuts.  I read another post under the DH/SO post about the sweet gifts in a stocking so just thought we could share some tips too.  I usually just fill ours with the usual:  Fruits, nuts, chocolates, batteries to accompany gifts, candies.  My 18-yo informed me that bobby pins would make great stocking stuffers so I might add that this year!
