Okay ladies, what kind of skin care regimen do you use?

Posted: Sep 29, 2011

I looking for a new skin care regimen.  I'm 44 and have a round, chubby face which I used to hate, but now realize it has prevented me from getting a lot of wrinkles.  I have a few fine lines around my eyes and those parentheses around my mouth, if you know what I mean.  I'm looking for something to prevent future wrinkles and to work on what I have.  I have freckles and have sun damaged my skin when I was younger, so my skin is blotchy without makeup.

I used to use Mary Kay, but there's so much on the market now I keep thinking I might be missing out of some miracle cream or something.  Plus all I've ever really done is cleanse and moisturize.  I guess I need to graduate to Retin-A or one of those other repair products.

So what does everyone else use?

Dove soap and Oil of Olay - RosyPosy

That's it. No special creams or astringents, just gentle cleansing and moisturizing. Anything more than this and my face burns and itches and gets seriously pissed off.

I have rosacea and very sensitive skin, plus it is oily, so while I have zero wrinkles at age 47, I do have the rosy/ruddy complexion and still get breakouts.

On the rare occasion I do wear makeup, I use a green-tinted preparation under my foundation, and a yellow-tinted loose powder to finish. Both are from Clinique and formulated especially for rosacea. They neutralize the red and splotches and make for an even, "normal" color.

Dove soap and Vaseline. No joke. Of course, my skin has never been exposed to the sun or any harsh elements.

I highly recommend talking to your regular doctor about getting a Rx for a tube of "Renova." It's not cheap (I don't have insurance and a tube cost $100) but holy crap the stuff works and I've had the same tube for about 2 years now, even though it's expired it still works just fine!

You use a TEENSY amount. Directions say "pea sized" twice a day. I use half of that once a day (super sensitive skin thanks to years of self-abuse) and it causes it to gently slough away after just a few days. It will be red, kinda raw, and you really have to baby it as far as washing with a nice neutral cleanser and patting skin dry (NO rubbing!) and moisturizing and being religious about staying out of the sun while you use this stuff BUT IT WORKS.

You can spend a ton on OTC fancy creams that just don't deliver like this stuff can. I only use it in spots, never on my whole face at once because I don't think I could handle all the peeling, and I don't use it every day, just maybe a week at a time when I start to notice brown spots showing up.

I wear makeup almost all the time too because of my prior damage, but it looks a heck of a lot better now than it used to and don't need nearly as much to "spackle" onto my face. I always use stuff with a high SPF as well, to avoid further damage, and I have finally, after like 20 years, STOPPED picking, which was a huge hurdle for me with that messed up form of OCD.

Good luck! If the price has you bummed out, just think that it's only the same cost as eating out only a few times.
:-)
do you just use this on brown patches? - face

I had treatments done to my face to remove brown spots, cost me $900 and now, a year later, I am developing more in other areas. I dont want to pay that again, so it would be nice to find something that works on the brown patches.

Thanks.
I've used it on my face, neck, and front chest area... - Hayseed

I've never tried it on say "liver spots" on my hands or arms just because they don't bother me. Does it completely remove the brown patches? No. BUT it makes them a heck of a lot less noticable and this is coming from a person with crazy scarring, so maybe for the average person it would work even better.
:)

Dove soap, Neutrogena moisturizer w/30 spf - Keeping it simple

[ In Reply To ..]
Eons ago when I worked for a pathologist, who really knew about derm stuff, he told me that unless there were cosmetic issues (rosacea, brown spots, etc), to keep it simple, and above all else, use sunscreen. For derm issues, a dermatologist should be consulted for suggestions.

What Skin Products Do You Ladies Use?Feb 04, 2013
I have older (40) skin that is acne prone. I'm looking for a skin product that doesn't over dry as acne products can sometimes do because my skin is older and now wrinkle prone too. I use neutrogena moisturizer, aveeno dry skin oatmeal bar, and retin A. I only wear foundation maybe once or twice a week (neutrogena). I know it's the products that are causing me to break out because I used to use Rhonda Allison and didn't break out, my skin looked great, however, Rhonda All ...

One For The LadiesApr 04, 2012
One for the ladies One day my housework-challenged husband decided to wash his Sweatshirt. Seconds after he stepped into the laundry room, he shouted to me, "What setting do I use on the washing machine?" "It depends," I replied. "What does it say on your shirt?" He yelled back, "University of Oklahoma." And they say blondes are dumb... A couple is lying in bed. The man says, "I am going to make you the happiest woman in the world." The woman replies, "I'll miss you..." "It's j ...

LADIESMar 01, 2010
So, I was watching a television show.  I guess it's become the new "thing" for older women to prey on younger men, and the younger men to look for "cougars".  Wondering, how young would you go?  One of the women on the show was 54 (she looked really good, but had a lot of work done...) and regularly dated men in their 20s!  That to me is way to young.  My feeling is, if you're old enough to be a mom or grandmother, best to stick to your age "box".   ...

saying I was going to take up sewing.  In high school home ec class, we had a sewing project and I liked it, but never kept up with it.  My mom can sew on buttons, patches, and hem a pair pants by hand in a pinch, but machine sewing was something she never learned.  Her mother, my grandmother, was the seamstress in the family.  She could make clothes, quilts, you name, she could sew it.  However, my mom just never bothered to learn the skill like my aunts did.  Any ...

Question For The Ladies Regarding PMSFeb 11, 2013
I just have a question.  I just turned 38 years old.  In the past, with my menstrual cycle, I never had "PMS" symptoms, never had cramps or cravings or "attitude" or anything.  I have noticed within the past year that I have become INCREDIBLY cranky just before my menstrual cycle.  I have noted that within the past few months, it is BEYOND cranky.  Sometimes, I am just so aggravated that I seriously feel like I have so much built in anger that I want to punch a wall! &nb ...

Some good common sense and an irate reaction to Trump here, so probably this might be only for those of us who do not like Donald Trump - definitely a liberal cast to this blog, but what the heck I have to skim through those diatribes from the Heritage Foundation and that awful Judge Jeanine, so about time to spread a bit of progressive wealth of knowledge. I have not put the entire post - bear in mind the beginning is very good and will make you laugh out loud, so please read if you are so inc ...

Ah, Love Is In The Air But Ladies, Did You EverFeb 12, 2016
Many years ago I was married and my husband had this thing of leaving, just leaving without any problems going on. No money issues, no arguments, just up and leaving, sometimes for months. I started an on the job affair with a guy, eventually leaving the marriage because the new love was hot, hot, hot! The on the job affair lasted for a year or more, even years later we reconnected for a short period. Fond memories. ...

So....what Did You Ladies Think Of Magic Mike?Jul 06, 2012
I thought the language was a little much....I mean, come on, nobody cusses and uses the F word that much, do they?  Aside from that, I thought the story was cute, and the dancing was pretty hot.  I have never been to a male strip tease show, but I am told that men make more at it than women. It's funny because all of the women in our family, and large circle of friends, went together.  It is really not a good movie for men (even if they were gay).  None of the men, of c ...

Ok Ladies, I Need Your Help. Back At Christmas, My DaughterMay 01, 2012
made me this cute decorated mason jar filled with dry ingredients.  They made it at church as a gift project and it came with an accompanying recipe card that explained how to combine the dry ingredients with some wet ingredients and make some sort of sweet treat.  Problem is I lost the card and I cannot for the life of me remember what it is supposed to make.  I remember something about unsalted butter and that's it! Anyway, in the jar it looks like there is white chocolate ...

Skin IssuesFeb 23, 2011
Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...

Help With Skin Issue, PleaseJul 26, 2011
I've never had this before, but on my forehead and spreading to a small part of my cheek, near my mouth and on one side of my nose I've developed seborrheic keratosis.  My PCP told me to use a very mild cleanser and hydrocortisone cream x3 daily, but it really doesn't seem to be helping much.  The spots get warm to the touch and itchy and are really getting more and more difficult to cover when I have to go out. Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...

Question About Rx Skin ProductNov 30, 2011
I was complaining to my doc about fine lines, crow's feet/smiles lines, and the beginnings of those "marionette" lines (nasolabial fold area) and was inquiring about botox or a filler.  He told me I wasn't ready for that yet and instead prescribed Retin A gel.  He said faithful use of this, starting judiciously and then increasing, would provide visible reduction in about 8-12 weeks.  I've heard that Retin A (even the microgel) can be really harsh on the skin ...

Hypothyroidism And Skin IssuesApr 09, 2011

If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

The Skin Rash That Refuses To DieApr 16, 2016
Anyone got good skin rash remedies?  I've had a rash on my left forearm for several YEARS.... it waxes and wanes, but is always dry and plaque-like.  Very similar to psoriasis, but my arthritis is osteo, not inflammatory, so I'm pretty sure it's just some form of eczema.  It's sometimes dry and scaly, sometimes weepy (especially when I scratch too much) and has become scarred as a result.
