what phrases just get under your skin?

Posted: Oct 26, 2013

Mine is "fact of the matter".  It was one my mother in law said constantly while complaining about something.  Always following the phrase would be an opinion, not a fact.

What are your pet peeves?

;

Too many to count. - shipwrecked

I "could" care less!

Irregardless - anon

nm

ya know what I'm sayin... - Mrs HDS

[ In Reply To ..]
No... I have no clue what your saying! :)

what have you - peeved

Using that for who or whom - Miss Piggy

[ In Reply To ..]
Overusing "also" and "any"; using "as well as" instead of a simple "and"; "patient with" instead of "patient has" and on and on and on.

Before in the past--drives me crazy - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
said by many female physicians. BEFORE IS IN THE PAST.

numerous of times - Screech

[ In Reply To ..]
numerous times is enough without of.

In the context of - ugh

[ In Reply To ..]
I have a hospitalist that says "in the context of" at least 10 times in every single one of his dictations. That phrase usually doesn't even fit with what he's saying. I have come to loathe that phrase.

Not a phrase, just a word... - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
"Hashtag" It's everywhere; hashtag this, hashtag that. It sets my teeth on edge.

Is that the "number sign" above 3 on the keyboard - L&L

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it's a twitter thing. Took me forever to figure that out. It's as bad as making that quotes gesture with your fingers when you say something.

Non-medical, but... - Gone Missing/Went Missing

[ In Reply To ..]
Gone missing and went missing are horrendously grammatically incorrect. Supposed journalists use it all the time. Sets my teeth on edge. Really, makes no grammatical sense, just sounds like trash language.

I get it; it's a way to truncate "the person was noticed to be missing on Sunday...," but it's horrible. Something new that started in the 1980s, I think, maybe 1970s. I never heard it before that and certainly wasn't in any of my grammar books in elementary school.

Just sayin' - is one of them...

[ In Reply To ..]
"It is what it is." and "tweaked" are all phrases that set my teeth on edge. ahhhhhgggg.

gets my goat when someone says - 7 am in the morning

[ In Reply To ..]
Really... you mean not 7 am in the evening?

The word LIKE after every fourth like word - like how do people like talk

[ In Reply To ..]
Aaarrgh. Makes me nuts, especially when you hear "professional" people, especially broadcasters.

When people use the word "anymore" instead of "lately" - nm

My MIL - Uses

[ In Reply To ..]
Uses the word "yet" for "still." "Do you have your cold yet?"

with regards to, in regards to - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I feel like the "regarded" thing should be sent a greeting card.

With (kindest) regards to the lesion...

Regard/Regards - Gets me too-see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
That one drives me nuts, too. It's "with regard to the lesion." "With regard to what you said last night..."

BUT, give my regards to Broadway. Give my regards to the family.

Can't stand the word "tweak." - ZvilleMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to work in a corporate office and the bosses there were constantly "tweaking" everything! That was 15 years ago and I still can't hear that word without cringing :)

First and foremost - GrateMT

[ In Reply To ..]
It's redundant.

...and that resonated with the client - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
Corporations like: "...and that resonated with the client." It's corporate speak for "the client liked that idea."

"Let me be clear" by all politicians! - MT wallet

[ In Reply To ..]
xx

That's what's up. - Ugghhhh!

[ In Reply To ..]
People (30-ish) in my area say "That's what's up" instead of just saying okay. I could understand if kids were saying it, but adults, really? I have an adult friend and he will seriously say "That's what's up" every other sentence in our conversation. I finally started saying it as much as him, hoping he can see how stupid it sounds.

My husband says this too. I think it sounds childish - OP

[ In Reply To ..]
glad i'm not the only one!

"No offense but..." right before they insult you! nm - clb

Old Commercial Jingles/Catch PhrasesMar 25, 2013
Anyone remember any old commercial jingles/catch phrases that still jingle in your brain? Depending on your age, these could be different for all of us. I was born in the mid 50's and as a very small child I remember the Good 'N Plenty song. It rings in my head. I don't really remember all the words, but the tune sure goes through my brain a lot.   ...

Skin IssuesFeb 23, 2011
Well, we're all pretty much feeling the economic squeeze and I'very decided I need to find a more economical line of skin care products (I have sensitive skin and have been using Cetaphil cleanser with creme de la mer toner and the creme de la mer moisturizing cream for ages).  I don't know if its because my skin is just supersensitive or so used to these high-end toners and moisturizers that they just go haywire when I try something new and more economic.  I'd bee ...

Severe Dry Skin....Jan 24, 2011

Help With Skin Issue, PleaseJul 26, 2011
I've never had this before, but on my forehead and spreading to a small part of my cheek, near my mouth and on one side of my nose I've developed seborrheic keratosis.  My PCP told me to use a very mild cleanser and hydrocortisone cream x3 daily, but it really doesn't seem to be helping much.  The spots get warm to the touch and itchy and are really getting more and more difficult to cover when I have to go out. Has anyone else had this and found something a bit more he ...

so this morning i exfoliated my face as per my usual routine, but now my face feels so irritated and itchy. i'm not sure if it is from the exfoliant or what but i'm really uncomfortable here. I took an antihistamine thinking that may help if it wasnt because of the product, but it doesnt seem to have helped. I've been drinking lots of water too. Skin Tag AdviceMar 24, 2015
Have a skin tag located on my neck.  It was red and inflammed looking for the last couple of weeks.  This a.m. it has turned white and is just hanging on by a thin thread.  Collar of my shirt(s) keep rubbing against it.  Friend told me to pull it off.  I don't think I can do that.  Put a band-aid over it.  Hesitant to pull it off as I am a diabetic.   Don't have an extra money to go to a doctor.  Anybody else have tihs experi ...

Followup On My Skin CancerJan 11, 2010
Well, I had my surgery on New Year's Eve, and came away with an 8 cm incision wrapping around my dorsal forearm.  I got the pathology back and it was a well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma, 3 x 3.5 cm, all margins clear.  Right now looking at the incision it's hard to imagine that he's correct when he says it will eventually be just a very thin white line.  It looks like someone tried to cut my arm off.  I have to go back every three months for a recheck ...

Question About Rx Skin ProductNov 30, 2011
I was complaining to my doc about fine lines, crow's feet/smiles lines, and the beginnings of those "marionette" lines (nasolabial fold area) and was inquiring about botox or a filler.  He told me I wasn't ready for that yet and instead prescribed Retin A gel.  He said faithful use of this, starting judiciously and then increasing, would provide visible reduction in about 8-12 weeks.  I've heard that Retin A (even the microgel) can be really harsh on the skin ...

Hypothyroidism And Skin IssuesApr 09, 2011
I have hypothyroidism, but not taking any medications.  Part of my problem is my face and skin.  Under my eyes is always flaky (like psoriasis) and I've got pimples that are breaking out all over my face, but they are not like the pimples of my youth (without getting gross about how I used to get rid of them), now when I try to pop them nothing happens and they get bigger and redder and they hurt.  The skin on my face is normal but my forehead is normal to oily and the areas ...

No More Brittle Hair Or Dry Skin.Sep 20, 2010
If any of you have problems with brittle hair and dry skin, try a shower filter.  The water in your shower is filled with chemicals, minerals, and the same or more amount of chlorine as swimming pool water.  I just purchased an Aquasana shower filter.  In less than 1 week, I have noticed a tremendous difference in the softness of my hair and skin.  It is like showering in pure spring water.  There is no way I would ever go back to using plain shower water again!  ...

What Skin Products Do You Ladies Use?Feb 04, 2013
I have older (40) skin that is acne prone. I'm looking for a skin product that doesn't over dry as acne products can sometimes do because my skin is older and now wrinkle prone too. I use neutrogena moisturizer, aveeno dry skin oatmeal bar, and retin A. I only wear foundation maybe once or twice a week (neutrogena). I know it's the products that are causing me to break out because I used to use Rhonda Allison and didn't break out, my skin looked great, however, Rhonda All ...

The Skin Rash That Refuses To DieApr 16, 2016
Anyone got good skin rash remedies?  I've had a rash on my left forearm for several YEARS.... it waxes and wanes, but is always dry and plaque-like.  Very similar to psoriasis, but my arthritis is osteo, not inflammatory, so I'm pretty sure it's just some form of eczema.  It's sometimes dry and scaly, sometimes weepy (especially when I scratch too much) and has become scarred as a result. I've tried everything:  Cortisone creams, dry skin creams, ant ...

Ever Have Your Skin Feel Hot And Dry Like Getting A Sunburn, But You Have Been Indoors All DayAug 12, 2010
Ok, this is weird.  Never had this feeling before, but I am getting up in years, so maybe it is just old age taking it toll.    I am sitting in my living room, lights off, 3 fans going.  We are in the middle of a heat-wave. Over 90 degrees outside, heat index over 100, humidity unbelievable.  I live in an old house with old wiring.  We tried window air conditioners, but could only use 1 at a time and only for a certain number of hours before it started blowing fus ...

Okay Ladies, What Kind Of Skin Care Regimen Do You Use?Sep 29, 2011
I looking for a new skin care regimen.  I'm 44 and have a round, chubby face which I used to hate, but now realize it has prevented me from getting a lot of wrinkles.  I have a few fine lines around my eyes and those parentheses around my mouth, if you know what I mean.  I'm looking for something to prevent future wrinkles and to work on what I have.  I have freckles and have sun damaged my skin when I was younger, so my skin is blotchy without makeup. What Are Some Of Your Favorite Hair/skin/makeup Products?Mar 20, 2012
Right now I am really loving Renpure's hair products.  I've been using their shampoo and conditioner (and have gotten 3 compliments on the health of my hair), but only just recently tried their Argan oil treatment.  LOVE. As far as daily defrizzer:  I've long been a fan of Paul Mitchell's (smells ever so slightly of green apple), but after many years my bottle finally ran out.  I'd seen a promo of Bumble  and Bumble's defrizz tx in Oprah ...

Fad "phrases"Oct 26, 2012
Maybe I'm just not hip and am finally showing my age of 41, but there is a certain phrase it seems everyone uses, even my doctor and it's driving me crazy to no end! It's the "I know, right?" phrase.   I have been trying to figure out why I dislike the phrase so much, but when I hear it, my skin crawls.  My 11-year-old knows I don't like it and picks on me with it daily.  So, does my husband.  Anyone else bothered by that phrase? ...
